Sorry I have not been online for a few days. Myself, I have worked on diesels going on 15 years. I would not have one as a gift. Between the added maintenance costs and the expensive breakdowns with a diesel, I will take a gasoline powered vehicle any day.
Then you mentioned a vehicle 10 years old. Another strike. Out of warranty, and you do not know if it has had all the maintenance or none of it. That in itself would make me look elsewhere.
Being that with my job, I am on call at various times of the year. I buy a vehicle brand new, take excellent care of it maintenance wise, and when it starts to fail me, it goes away. If I have to take a loss, so be it. At least I know I will be at work on time.

That my friend is too long of a list. But I will post from experience what I have run into with diesels.
Having to add a fuel system stabilizer into the fuel tank(s) from time to time. Especially in the colder weather. To prevent the fuel from gelling up. Especially the vehicles that sit for extender periods of time.
Having to plug in block heaters, and remembering to both plug and unplug them. If one doesn't do this, plan on the vehicle being hard to start and or wearing out batteries and starters sooner than later.
Finding fuel stations that even sell diesel. Or if they do, it might just be one pump. Kind of sucks if you are number 3-4 waiting in line, and the other vehicles are taking on 50 + gallons or more. You will grow old with that.
Maintenance. Diesel motor oil usually sells for more money than regular gasoline oils do. That and the change intervals can be just the same or earlier than a gas motor. Factor in that a diesel can take 3 times more engine oil than a gas motor, and it adds up really quick.
Draining out a water separator, and changing out that filter. Some makes and models will make you a contortionist. Like to do that on a zero degree day? When it freezes up? Don't think so.
Repair work. Just accessing some items can be a real chore, along with the labor rates, and finding guys even willing to do it. Back in my dealership days, most mechanics would disappear faster than rats running out of a burning building when a diesel came into the service drive.
Down time. Getting the part(s). Since the diesel sales volume and market is a fraction of the gasoline powered versions of the same vehicle, stocking parts has always been an issue. Don't expect to be back on the road any time soon when a diesel breaks down.
It really doesn't matter who's name is on the side. All makes pretty much have the same issues.

Cup, a glow plug basically works as a heating coil. Threaded into a cylinder head, much the same way as a spark plug in a gasoline engine. The glow plugs heat up the combustion chamber of an engine, in an effort to speed up and ease up the starting process, and to reduce emissions during cold engine operation.
Said glow plugs are controlled by a module, computer, relay, switch, etc. If and when a issue arises and the glow plug(s) fail to heat up, the engine may not start, might start hard, or misfire. Usually in the colder weather.

Thanks, Karr.
I kind of knew how a glow plug worked, just not the technical aspects of it.
But, hey. I am a woman.

Whatever! I know the junk thieves will steal anything off ones property if its not nailed down -- including cast iron yard ornaments -- so I suppose old rusted junk vehicles are like money in the bank to some junk yards.
At least I don't have to worry about any man wanting to 'invest' in my rusty ol arse.
