A blue screen before the desktop loads is usually either a driver or hardware issue.
You can usually determine which by trying to load windows in safe mode. If it still happens loading safe mode it is a hardware issue. Usually this is memory related but could also be related to the hard disk.

You need to test the system hardware.
Process of elimination:
Have a family member or friend download and burn a copy of the following Linux Mint and UBCD "ultimate boot CD"
Boot your system using Linux CD. If your system boots to a desktop and everything functions normally "you just eliminated it being a hardware issue for everything except the hard drive"
Power off the system and insert the UBCD and boot from it, now use the built in testing tools to check your hard drive. Hint Hard Drive Sentinel is the quickest check for drive health of all the drive utilities on UBCD if Hard Drive Sentinel reports your drive to be at 100% health then you just eliminated it from being the issue. If it shows less than 100% there is your issue.
If you discover that all of your hardware is fine, use Linux Mint in combination with a Flash drive from Walgreen's to copy important files documents, photos, etc, prior to doing any system restore.

SPECIAL NOTE: If you boot the system with a live Linux CD/DVD you can click on everything on the desktop "except Install Linux" Do Not CLICK Install unless you intend to do so. If you click install it will wipe all partitions off of your hard drive including the factory restore partition.
