Perhaps you should have gone with her, to tell her a word she desperately needed to hear. The word NO.

The older a vehicle gets, especially the foreign low volume makes, the harder and more expensive it is to get parts for said vehicle. Couple that to the lack of any safety devises, and you will soon see what I mean.

The only thing I can think of is engine. Good for 75,000 miles in Buses, 100,000 in Beetles. Easy to pull and rebuild. Aftermarket engine parts.

Heater? That was always a problem. Air cooled engine blowing air over heater boxes? Camper has a separate heater, wonder if it ties into windshield?

All I have learned for sure is she has bought a classic, bringing it home every stop made young people came out of stores to gaze up on it. Now it is in my yard in no mans land and people are stoping & gulking at it. Who would have guessed? Not me

No, she did not buy a classic. She bought an antique. There is a big difference.

Hopefully she will find this out. Before her pocket book runs out or she ends up meeting her demise in it.

Flying old airplanes that are kept up and airworthy is one thing. Vehicles, that is a TOTALLY different story.........

Probably something to do with the liability and or getting parts is why most guys won't work on older vehicles, much less foreign ones.

What I have found with most older campers, rv's, and conversion vans is that the companies that put them together at the time went out of business shortly thereafter.

That and they hired substandard help, used Home Depot bulk wiring, along with grade 3 swing set type of fasteners. One usually will find that upon pulling up the 1970's degrading shag carpeting......

If she found a mechanic about our age who worked on them, she should be alright.
There was book back in the 70's "the Complete Idiots Guide". Written so anybody could follow it. Find her a copy for Christmas?

She got it out of the shop yesterday for 465 dollars including new tires as the old ones were cracking, said the motor is good & strong & ready for long trips
Filter was messed up but he said he was able to fix it correctly and fixed some wires under the steering wheel that some one had messed with. said it was good to go now.

Long trips in a 1979 V W? Perhaps that mechanic is hoping it's going to break down again in another state. That way, it will be out of his hands.

It maybe payback for me for having hung a old dealers VW sign in my shop, never thinking i would have to deal with one

Hello, this is stargazzers grandaughter. People have gone for long trips in VW vans for quite a long time and its becoming quite trendy. Maybe you should catch up! Its really neat and only needs a new battery. Otherwise she runs great and catches everyones attention. Sure parts could get expensive if they break but thats with any older vehicle! WORTH IT. COLLECTOR. LOVE IT.
