Why did Maris lose his power at age 30? Was his bat speed simply gone when he turned 30 in September of 1964? And what of Heyward? Is his bat speed simply no longer there?

According to similarity scores one of the most similar players to Maris is Eric Davis. The parallel is interesting, as while few fans would come up with Davis as a match for Maris, both had fine skills and talent but were dogged by injuries during the primes of their careers.
As a kid I remember Roger hurting his wrists but I must say Roger had the most beautiful swing I ever saw from left side and a great arm...when he went to Cardinals he helped Cards win in another way...besides injuries a minor leaguer from my home town played in a minor league game prior to reg Yanks game to follow and I saw Roger sitting behind home plate reading a news paper and smoking a cigarette..cigarettes killed him...but he's still one of my heros till this day...imo he's still the seasonal HR king..RIP Roger

After Maris lost his power and became a Cardinal he increased his batting average big time with a lot of singles and doubles. I got to know Roger well in spring training. Sorp is right, Roger loved his cigarettes and at that time players were allowed to smoke in the dugout between innings during spring training games. Roger could easily go through a pack of cigarettes during a nine inning spring training game but that wasn't even close to the seven packs a day that John Wayne smoked at one time.

Maybe Maris had gone into the future to get all the best steroid treatments and somehow he accidentally broke his time machine later on.

Hayward may need a batting coach to work with and adjust his stance. Everyone here knows;in any walk of life-what was the way in our early 20's isnt the way now.

Why, yes, he could afford to pay for a personal batting coach.
