You'll were talking about gardening. Yep, it's that time of year again.

Year before last, I got into hydroponic gardening in a room in my basement with grow lights and bubble buckets and all that. But the room was small (about 60 sq ft) and not nearly big enough to supply all my yearly food needs, but I was growing 24 hours a day, year round, which helped offset the small growing area in part. This type of gardening was all new to me at the time, and it took some time to learn the ropes, but I was getting my feet wet. The idea was to supplement my food store (which is enough to last at least three years) with fresh produce. I love tomato sandwiches. And I like my tomatoes squishy red ripe right off the vine. When I was a kid, I used to go out to the garden, pick the juiciest squishiest red ripe tomato I could find right off the vine, come back, slice it up and make a tomato sandwich with plenty of mayonnaise on it. UMM, good. I could live on tomato sandwiches. Store bought tomatoes just cannot compete with a true vine ripe tomato (Most store bought tomatoes are picked with they have the first blush of red on them, then they artificially ripen them with a gas, and these so called vine ripe tomatoes simply cannot complete with a true squishy red ripe tomato right off the vine).

Last year, knowing I needed more growing area, I put up a 260 ft by 10 ft hot house (these hot houses can be extended to any length, but I didn’t have any more room where I elected to put it), which increased the growing area to about 260 sq ft, and moved the hydroponics to the hot house, and greatly expanded it. I no longer needed the grow lights since the sun provides the light in the hot house. The hot house was double-pane, thermally insulated plastic, so it is relatively easy to heat in cold weather as long as the exterior temperature is not too far below freezing. The advantage of hot houses is that they extend the growing season and protect crops from bugs and insects and varmints like rabbits and dear and such, so they are a big advantage. They make gardening easy.

When winter arrived and the temperature was going to drop way below freezing, I plugged up a heater I bought for it and set it to switch on at a low temperature, but the heater failed to come on because it was not sitting quite level, and the level switch in it prevented it from switching on, and the cold that night killed off all my warm weather plants, including the tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers. It did not hurt the cold weather plants though, the Georgia collards, head cabbage, and onions, and they continued to grow and to produce. I had also planed sugar peas, which you can eat right off the vine, and they were doing well, but they were killed off by the cold too. I thought they were cold weather plants, but these didn't do too well in extremely cold weather.

Hydroponics, especially if you have a large area, demands a lot of time keeping the water levels up. But I solved that problem by devising and installing an automatic watering system, and it works great. That was a good move, it cut the upkeep time way down, and the water levels were always maintained at the ideal level. I highly recommend automatic watering systems for any type of gardening, and especially for hydroponic gardening, it’s the only way to go. The only thing I have to do now is maintain the proper PH and the fertilizer levels, but that does not have to be done daily. I was getting my feet wet, learning the best crops to grow in hot houses, growing techniques, pests and diseases, and all that. And I was learning from my mistakes. But I did end up with a continual yield of tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers right up until the temperatures started dropping way below freezing.

The type of hydroponics I am using is the bubble bucket type where you have a bucket containing water with fertilizer in it and a container at the top with a medium such as clay pellets for the roots that dip down a little into the water, and then air (supplied by air pumps) continuously bubbles up through the water. This works well, very well, but you have to keep the water levels up and the fertilizer levels up and the PH adjusted. (Note: I am also planning to experiment with drip systems this year, in which fertilized water is constantly dripped into the growing medium, it is said to work well. and it is simple. I also have a hydroponic system in which the roots are suspended in air with fertilized water droplets misting the roots, a system developed by the Israelis, and it is said to work well, and it is also good for rooting plants, but I have not used it yet.

I had an area in the hot house that I used for a spice and herb garden, you know stevia (a zero calorie natural sweetner, which is also a herb useful for curing one type of diabetes), and spices such as mints, sweet basil, cilantro, lemon balm, marjoram, parsley, sage, rosemary, thyme, chives, and such. And the herb garden did well, very well, and it is coming back up this year on its own, and it is growing out of control. But if you have too much of anything, you can dry it and store it for future use. This year I plan to expand the herb garden to include garlic and ginger and a number of medical herbs. And blackberries, which I planted last year, well bear this year. I also had a area for strawberries, and I plan to add a type of strawberry this year that will bear all year round (yes, they have those now). And in the fall, I planted Georga collards and head lattice and onions in the ground in the hot house, and they are doing well, but I do not have enough area in the hot house for this kind of thing (it takes a big mess of collards, for example, to make a pot of collards, because they cook down), nor do I have room for corn or anything like that. I really need a second hot house, but that is not in the cards yet.

I will be installing a blower in the hot house this year. Last year I have to leave the vents and door open to keep it from getting too hot in there. Unfortunately that allowed bugs to get in, which caused problems. I have now made and installed screens under the vents of the hot house and plan to install a blower this year, which will enable me to keep the door of the hot house closed and insects out. An interesting thing is happening, by the way. Frogs, both green tree frogs and brown and grey ground frogs are getting into the hot house and making their home there. It protects them from the cold during the winter. There are lots of them. But I don’t mind that, they don’t bother the plants, and they eat any bugs that get in. They’re welcome.

Certain plants are especially suited for hot houses. Tomatoes, for example, should be indeterminate, heavy yielding, and bearing till frost (but if you can keep it sufficiently warm on cold winter nights by heating the hot house, they can bear all year round), Cherry tomatoes are a favorite for hot houses. Plants should be self pollinating. Many of the plants recommended for hot houses are hybrids. So only a percentage of the seeds will be true to the parent plant, so you have to clone them to keep them going indefinitely, but that’s easy to do.

I am germinating and sprouting warm weather seeds right now to plant--I’m getting started late on this, I know, but that’s OK. I’m got too many projects going.

Louie

Yup I am a bit late getting seeds going too but will. We could get a May frost but my cold weather stuff can go out.

One of my little dogs like ripe red toms too. I let him in the garden and he eats them off the vine. So don't the box turtles.

That sounds like a nice size greenhouse. Last year they had hoop house deals here. Get approved, pay the $5K, build it and your reimbursed. I have plenty of room but these were pretty good sized.

Pollinating reminds me. I had a ghost pepper (bhut jalokia) and it was too late in the year for it. I brought it inside. It grew to the ceiling. Pollenate, hmmmmmm. I sarted catching all the ladybugs/asian beetles what ever they were and put them on the plant. I got several nice peppers.

I have a bunch of IBE totes, over 300 gal. I considered aquaponics, read into it quite a bit. Both aqua and hydro are good.

BREAKING : GM REHIRING 500 Laid-Off Michigan Workers BREAKING NEWS BY AMY MORENO MARCH 17, 2017
Share Tweet
General Motors plans to rehire 500 Michigan workers who were previously laid off.

The move comes after President Trump visited Michigan to announce his administration will review fuel efficiency standards, a move that could help automakers sell an increased number of larger models.

From Reuters

Trump praised recent job announcements by Ford Motor Co, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV and GM.
“That’s just the beginning,” he said in a speech to autoworkers in Ypsilanti, Michigan, on Wednesday. “I told (the auto executives) that’s peanuts, that’s peanuts. We’re going to have a lot more. They’re going to be building new plants, expanding their plants.”
Trump has discouraged the industry from investing in Mexico and urged foreign automakers on Wednesday to add U.S. production at a roundtable that included executives from Toyota Motor Corp, Volkswagen AG (VOWG_p.DE) and others.
In addition, GM said it would add 220 jobs at a plant in Romulus, Michigan, that is building 10-speed automatic transmissions, and it would retain 180 jobs by shifting Lansing workers to a Flint assembly plant to support pickup truck production.
The Detroit automaker in recent months has announced other U.S. job cuts and new investments. GM said in January it would invest another $1 billion in its U.S. factories.

There is more to "mileage" than people see.

I'm called terrible because I have a Ford F350 1 ton 4x4 gets 12mpg maybe. I also have a farm and haul 2600# containers of water, round bales, drag trailers twice the trucks size. It's a 2003 with 62,000 original miles. I put 4500 mi a year average, for farm use but left tags me.

Also tagged for my sports car, 2003 Anniversary Corvette Zo6. 22-26mpg with 405HP 6 speed.
46000 miles original.

BIG MIKE GETS DEVASTATING NEWS, HIS “LEGACY” DIDN’T LAST 2 MONTHS AFTER HE LEFT WH

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xInlKz5JL1g

To the joy of millions of students across the country, the nasty school lunch program that former first lady Michele Obama forced on public schools could be coming to an end.

The Washington Examiner reported that the School Nutrition Association released new recommendations for school lunches, which included scaling back on federal nutrition standards the Obama put into place. The report included proposals for reducing restrictions on food choices and adding options that would actually taste good.

“Overly prescriptive regulations have resulted in unintended consequences,” the paper stated.

Those consequences included a reduction in the number of students who participated in lunch programs, higher costs and increased food waste because students were required to accept foods that they had no plans to eat.

“Federal nutrition standards should be modified to help school menu planners manage these challenges and prepare nutritious meals that appeal to diverse student tastes,” the paper said.

Salt and whole grain standards have been problematic for schools, the paper noted. Obama’s lunch program aimed to offer low sodium foods, but those requirements limited foods that naturally contain sodium, include meat, some soups, salads and even low-fat deli sandwiches.

In addition, schools have struggled with the “limited availability of specialty whole grain items.”

“The federal government involving itself in what is served in school lunches is the epitome of government overreach,” Meadows told the Examiner, pointing out that school districts that opted out of the program provided students with better choices.

Meadows also said that he gave President Donald Trump a report of more than 300 regulations that his administration could undo, which included the federal lunch program standards.

Speaking of the lunch standards, Meadows said it was “the perfect example of how government interference generally makes a small problem far worse.”

The sooner we get Michelle Obama’s horrible lunch program out of our schools, the better off our students will be.

The Sentimental Brother

An Irish man walks into a pub. The bartender asks him, "What'll you have?" The man says, "Give me three pints of Guinness please." So the bartender brings him three pints and the man proceeds to alternately sip one, then the other, then the third until they're gone. He then orders three more. The bartender says, "Sir, I know you like them cold. You don't have to order three at a time. I can keep an eye on it and when you get low, I'll bring you a fresh cold one." The man says, "You don't understand. I have two brothers, one in Australia and one in the States. We made a vow to each other that every Saturday night we'd still drink together. So right now, my brothers have three Guinness Stouts too, and we're drinking together. The bartender thought that was a wonderful tradition. Every week the man came in and ordered three beers. Then one week he came in and ordered only two. He drank them and then ordered two more. The bartender said to him, "I know what your tradition is, and I'd just like to say that I'm sorry that one of your brothers died." The man said, "Oh, me brothers are fine----I just quit drinking."
