So I just came to realize this week that some people still believe that the Earth is flat. It's hard to imagine, but apparently there's a whole society of these folks.

Interesting comments on this "flat earth denial" article (interesting and kindof scary):

Flat-earth rhetoric seems to be spreading much faster recently (I wonder if the CDC keeps stats?), so I wonder who here would like to argue in favour? And go!

The bible does mention the four corners of earth and that it is round.
There is no mention of it being flat.

They take "round" to mean like a dinner plate.

Arguing that if the earth was a sphere, we would all fly off into space:

I've read lately about some NBA players who think this way. They say people only think the earth is round because they were told to think that way.

I'm trying to picture how they think the earth really looks. Like a dinner plate huh? Well how do we have a magnetic field then? Or if the depth of this dinner plate wasn't more of a cube (or round like science shows) then where does the heat and molten rock come from? Geothermal energy, volcanism, plate tectonics.

More importantly, wouldn't our oceans run "off" the edges of this flat earth?

The earth is lumpy.

Saw on a science show, this guy has the sweetest job in the world.
He travels around and weighs a Garden Gnome on scale in different locations.
Higher altitudes are lighter, lower altitudes are heavier.

Learned in HVAC class that water boils at 212° @ sea level.
Pressure cookers are popular in Colorado.

I participated in a flat earther takedown on David McAfee's fb a few days ago. It's still going on there. They are nearly impervious to reason and keep flinging memes like they're poop on a hot tin roof. My guess is its just another form of trolling really. .. Speaking of, anyone seen jitsbaby lately?

When you say "another form of trolling", are you going with the theory that none of these folks actually believe what they are spreading?

I think it's a given that many do (I'm looking for the perspective of members like Louie and Catlover here).

On the other hand, I could buy that the modern flat-earther revival originated with some people who know better and are just looking to cause trouble... Except that it's been around for a loooong time.

I suspect what we are seeing (apparent sharp rise in popularity) has a lot to do with the rise of Trump, which has encouraged social conservative extremists to take a sort of "anything is possible if we believe hard enough" viewpoint.

Of course it's also a lot about the prevalence of Facebook accounts and "friend" groups, which allow like-minded members of the hive to spread ideas much more quickly and far away than was possible when they had to rely on snail mail via the pony express.

Speaking of far away, looking at a flat-earth map (on which Australia has to be spread out until it's 3x the size of the US or so), I wonder how long it takes to fly from Buenos Aires to Cape Town or Sydney? Ottawa to Moscow on the other hand looks like a brief little puddle-hop! I suppose all the pilots are part of the conspiracy, refusing to take the shortcut over the North Pole (aka Middle-Earth)

Well, as per some of the alternate thinking examples constantly posted in the forums here, I have no doubt some actually do believe. However, often times i've found that many conspiracy theorists are conspiracy theorists for a reason, such as to support an anti-semitic or racist agenda. (see longbobby/funwithmusic/jits). These type in my opinion know exactly what their doing, but continue to push their agenda despite having been proven wrong over and over again on multiple levels. As for those who fall in between, it’s not because the conspiracy theory or theories have merit, but because the conspiracy theorist has accepted as fact that government and the media are lying and that alternate sources are more likely closer to the truth. Not surprising, is that the rise in popularity would coincide with Trump. Many people were after all, at the point where they were unable to trust anything or anybody. You could say it was the perfect breeding ground.

You need to rephrase it like, "I haven't found any proponents who aren't extreme right wing American Christians yet. Have you?"

Don't lump us all into that group. There are a lot of right wing so-called Christians that are clueless of the teaching of the bible and of Jesus Christ, otherwise they wouldn't be so right wing.

There are also a lot of Christians who aren't right wing who get it.

The right wing is wealthy corporatists. Did you mean Social Conservative? That seems likely, but I don't know the politics of most of the flat-earthers I've come across in my googling.

Look on the bright (humorous) side. Now all these CT'rs are hunting each other all over the youtubes, claiming all 9/11 Truthers, Creationists, Apollo Hoax believers, etc. are shills and deluded unless they also accept the "irrefutable proof that the earth is flat" and immobile. Even Alex Jones is being called a shill.

Oh c'mon lobo, you know they're extreme right wing conservative Christians. Christians who actually read the bible and "get it" aren't right wing. They are enlightened and know that science and the bible have more in common than not.

People out there say they believe the Earth is flat. I don't believe they really think that way. I have shown one Venus in Quarter phase and asked him to explain it and he told me it was a govt trick...I showed him Galileo's observations of Venus (same thing really just dated 1610) he had nothing to say.

I think they are pretending so they can feel special about belonging to a unique group.

Not "would". He did. He said "forgive them, Father, for they don't know (what they do)"

Everything is relative, Lobo. Maybe there is something that you know or get better than others, but still a little nothing compared to what others know or get. I'm sure it feels good to look down.

Everything is relative though.
