1. Yes
2. No

So I'm at dinner tonight with some friends of mine and the restaurant, being Saturday night and also very popular, was very busy. We had to wait 45 minutes for a table.

After we were seated, our waiter was taking foreeeeeeeeever to get us items that we needed. That's fine, I understand that it's very busy and he probably had 4 or 5 tables to take care of. However, he keeps stopping to chat with another table of his in his que. (Apparently he knew the guy at the table.)

After we finish our meals everyone wants to go. However, our waiter and this guy at the other table seemed to have settled in for a long conversation. They were just going on and on and on and you could tell by the waiter's body language that he wasn't in any rush.

Finally after awhile of this I try getting the attention of either the waiter or the guy at the table because we wanna go. All I could do was snap my fingers. I ended up getting the attention of the guy at the table and I said to him, "Dude, you're tying up the waiter. We wanna get out of here. You're not the only table he has to take care of." The guy was very apologetic and the waiter too.

When the waiter came back to our table to give us our check I said to him, "Dude, you gotta shut these people down. They're not your only table."

So when we got up to leave, the woman at this table says to me, "try to have a good night" as if I'm the problem here.

Would you have said something if you were in my shoes or would you have just practiced your patience?

I would have said something to him directly after I've been given the brush off the second time.

If that didn't work, there is always the option of leaving a meager tip with a note on the bill explaining why. Were there were less than 6 of you together at the table? I tend to tip well. 20% at the minimum. But if the service is truly shitty enough because of the server's attitude, I have given cash tip money to the manager asking him to make sure the cooks and bus staff get it all and not the waiter/waitress. That way the server gets nothing and the lower folks on the totem pole get a bigger cut. And the manager is apprised of what the wait staff is up to.

That's nice. Then you can be one of the people that just sit and stew in the booth about how your waiter is ignoring his tables without doing anything about it.

OP, you can always go to the register & pay, instead of waiting for the waiter to be ready for you with the bill. That's what my dad & I would do.

My dad takes out his sister, her kids, & her hubby for dinner, they were joining our family for dinner. My dad didn't want them to see the bill. He didn't want them to pay for dinner. So a lot of time he goes to the register & paid the bill there & then come back to the table.

I am sure my aunt's family know how much the bill was, the prices were on the menu that they ordered. It doesn't matter if they do see the bill. He just didn't want them to pay for dinner. A lot of time they do see the bill, but my dad would insist on paying for the whole bill. My dad is her younger brother.

To be honest our waiter was not ignoring us. The restaurant was just very very busy. We understand & we don't hold it against the waiter.

I think what you did was perfectly within reason. (And I wait tables for a living) Many customers have no qualms tying up their server with small talk. Some of these servers get wrapped up in a deep conversation and forget all about their other guests. It drives me crazy, I'm cool with a little small talk, but they have to realize I have other people to take care of.

Bad service get a bad tip. I would also have talked to the manager about the waiters behavior.

I waited table in high school, and six tables is not a lot to take care of properly.

snapping fingers is a big NO-NO but given the situation it's understood. the tip speaks louder than words. the waiter may also bartend (as I do too) but tables is not the same as bartending. I have a ton of friends that come in regularly since the bars/restaurants I work at are owned by fraternity brothers. be quick, get a laugh, then get to work. this waiter sounds like he just sucks at his job

Yeah it's all about getting off ones fat arse instead
of having the attitude of I give a 20% tip.

The conversation would of been about the restaurant so
it's obvious some thing needed to be discussed in regard
to a problem whether it be a booking the kitchen the food
a staff member not being to make his/her shift.

If it was compulsory to give a tip here I wouldn't think
I was owed a bloody Hilton experience.

I used to be a waitress so I know what it's like. It's hard work. It's not an easy job. You are on your feet all day (10 hours) for very little money. Sometimes the boss is not nice to you. It's not a cozy desk job where you can take a lot of coffee breaks, or a long 2 hours lunch.

None of them want to work there serving food, they do it because they have to. They don't have any other skills. And they make very little money. They are on their feet for 10 hours per day. It's not an easy job. I used to be one of them, so I understand. I have compassion for them. It's like any job. Sometimes you have jerks working there.

This and no tip. But then again, I do not like the obligatory 20% tip culture that is in USA either. The tip should be my choice, because I want to and because he/she deserved it with a good service.

Yeah, I know why. Still it doesn't make it good with me. And it is ironic when you think this is coming from USA. Capitalist to the core philosophy and all that stuff. lol
I live good tips too (not only to waiters but to my hairdresser too). But when I think they deserve it.

who the heck wants to wait 2 hours by the time they get their food if they're hungry?
there isn't a place with food great enough to wait 45 minutes for a table. maybe if they'd serve drinks while we wait I might consider it but they don't do that.

You fools are too submissive.

A poorly run restaurant has long wait times...they should increase table count/waiters etc if they are popular.

When I got to golden Coral they have like 400 people in there and the wait time is like 5 mins while you line up to pay $13 for your unlimited slop.

If the wait is 45 mins then you already know the service is gonna suck asssssssss.

This. And good or not, no way I'm gonna wait 45 minutes for a table.

90% of poor service is due to a wait staff that is grab assing in the back and plannin their party for the night. Plus,I see throse f**ks hangin out and playing on their phones all the time.

Zero tip for these a**holes. It's the easiest job on the planet for the most return.

I don't like that they split tips either. A good waitress with her tits out should get all the money she "worked" for.
