I was talking to somebody from another site today. I asked her what she did for work and she said she works in retail and works twenty hours a week at $12.50 an hour.
I asked why she didn't work more, she said it was because she did not want to lose her benefits.
She said she got $992 in social security benefits each month.
Basically she is making $25,000 a year by being lazy.
The system is really flawed, and it scares me as a hard-working individual.
She admitted to me she likes not working and enjoys getting free money every month.
I have noticed a trend in this country where people would rather collect disability, rather than work, and instead of overcoming your disabilities to be a good employee, use them to get on social security.
I wonder what this trend is due to.
Is because it has now gotten to point where it is truly better to not work than too work? Or is because some people just don't have a conscience?

OP, again, you're 29 years old and uninformed. Research more on the subject you. Intend to "float".
If the woman you spoken to receives $992.00 a month in Social Security benefits she has worked her a** off to qualify. And under the current SS law a recipient may return to work and boost their monthly income but they are restricted the amount of income they may make.
Grow up, OP.
You aren't paying the woman's benefits -- she has already earned them. She paid into the program and the government kept their promised commitment.

She's 27
She specifically told me that she did not want to work more because she did not want to lose her benefits.
She was on ssi before and now she moved up to ssdi.

If she's 27 then she doesn't receive Social Security unless she receives a widow's pension.

The number of people on social security and collecting disability has skyrocketed in the last several years. It's not because there are more disabled people. That should concern people.
This girl just does not want to work, like many people on disability.
I am very skeptical of people on it who are not retired because I look at some jobs out there that are so easy to do.
I don't get how some people can be so disabled they can't simply put groceries in a bag.
I have many disabilities. I am more disabled then many people collecting. And it does bother me.

At 27 she could have begun working and contributing to Social Security at age 16. You pay into both Social Security and SSDI out of your paychecks. You are allowed to work and not lose your benefits but they will be decreased. Benefits include medical. You really don't know her entire story. What is her disability? Maybe it's a mental health issue. Most disabled people who return to work can't work a full 40 hour week even if they'd like to it's just not physically or emotionally possible. Really, if she were that lazy she wouldn't be working at all.

It's not easy to get on disability so she had to have had some major problems.
As someone who is on disability, I can tell you I'd rather be working. I put 18 years into the system. If I hadn't, I'd be getting SSI which pays considerably less.
She's right in saying she doesn't want to lose her benefits. I'm only allowed to earn $1000 a month which would mean cuts in food stamps, medical and housing. If my health got worse, I will have lost a lot. You have to be careful. I got a widow's benefit and lost my Medicaid.

Godsbutterfly,
I have spoken with you about this before.
You are different.
I meet many people online who would rather not be working.
I disagree that you have to have major problems. You just have to exaggerate the problems you do have to make it seem like they prevent you from working. People are on it simply for having ADHD. I could bet for many people you find collecting for a disability, you could find another person with the level of disability who is working.
THIS GIRL EXPLICITLY TOLD ME THAT SHE DOES NOT WANT TO WORK BECAUSE SHE LIKES RECEIVING BENEFITS.
They like that they can collect.
I have so many health issues.
- ADHD
- Asperger Syndrome
- Anxiety
- Nighttime anxiety.
- Sleep issues
- Urinary issues
- OCD
But I still work full time. I live in constant fear that something will happen to me and that I would be unable to work, for example, my sleep issues got so bad I couldn't maintain a work schedule. I know I will never get approved, but if I had applied before I started working, say at age 18, I would have been approved.
It takes a heavy toll on my body and my mind.
I resent people as disabled or less disabled than me who get to collect.
You are from a different generation. Many people in my generation are viewing ssi and ssdi as means to an end. Their goal is get on it so they don't have to work.
The system needs major reforms.
I get very skeptical of a lot of people on it. Many are living full and active lives, with lots of outdoor activities.
I mean, it's so easy to some jobs, like bagging groceries (my second job).

It's my tax dollars, it's my issue.
I think if you are capable of working you should work.
Read the story. This girl clearly says she CAN work, but doesn't WANT to.

I do agree..if you can work you should..
But your ignorance is hanging out..
It's not YOUR tax dollars.
Social security is taken out of your check separately.
It's insurance in case you NEED it.
Not our fault uncle Sam misappropriated the funds for other purposes

I worked 60 hours a week from the time I was 18 to the time I was 32, at which point I became a truck driver and was on the road 3 weeks out of a month.
Now I get disability. Bite me.

Hanging in there. Got that Y-90 injected radiation into my liver last year, seemed to do some good, pain is kinda chronic now though, popping percos every 4 hours. They might put me on morphene tomorrow. Otherwise pretty good. Just moved into a new place, getting settled. Spent so many years after the surgery living with people that I guess it just never occured to me to get back out on my own again. It's easily the best thing I've done for myself this decade.
Good to see you too! Place just wouldn't be the same without ya!

If you worked that long you paid a lot into social security.
If you worked that long you are probably honest and truly can't work.
It's the people exploiting the system that I can't stand.
Like one girl I talked to whose ex-husband has been getting it since he was five for ADHD. That's unbelievable. Talk about a dream life. As soon as he turned five he gets social security and never has to work again. Also, to get social security for such a minor condition as ADHD is ridiculous.
I don't get how children can get it. If you are too young work, I think you should be too young to get social security. Even if your parents are disabled, that does not mean you will be disabled.
There is a trend among my generation to try to get on social security.
The system needs MAJOR reforms and hopefully they will be put in place soon.
I hate subsidizing laziness.
I talked to a girl on another site. She has anxiety and depression, and likely PTSD, but she still works 32 hours one week, then 40 the next week.
She probably could have exaggerated the effects of her disabilities and collected, but she is honest.
My ex has bipolar, but she still works full-time.
I met somebody on this site in 2014 who had lots of health conditions, but she is now working full time as a manager at a restaurant.
The vast majority of people in my generation on social security are people exaggerating minor conditions because it's obviously everybody's dream to sit back on do whatever you want.
Why does it bother me? Well, I pay taxes, so, as I mentioned earlier, I want to know that they aren't going to people cheating the system. The other reason is jealousy. I wish I could do whatever I want without having to work.

Well that I totally agree with. I know a guy in my hometown who has "learning disability" aka mild retardation. He's been a manager of an auto parts store for 20 years, has successfully launched his own karaoke gig, and is soon getting married. He's doing better for himself than many able-bodied people I've known.

If you want to change the system then support candidates who agree with you and they aren't likely to be democrats. Hold their feet to the fire to make sure they follow through. The system needs an extreme makeover most certainly. TRUMP would likely take on the job but you people rip him and rip him and rip him and investigate him and try to get him impeached etc. Give the egoist a break and let him do the job he was elected to do.
