Recent reports show that the United States is one of the most obese nations in the world—the only G-8 nation to crack the top 20 of the most overweight countries in the world.
For children and low-income people the problem is particularly acute. A 2015 report commission by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development found that the U.S. “has the fattest kids by a wide margin and is tops in poor health for teenagers.”
It’s a stunning shift in how we understand malnourishment. For almost the entirety of human history, the struggle for impoverished people was getting enough food to meet a sufficient daily caloric intake.
Today, the opposite is true: Low-income people are taking in too many calories (and often bad calories, at that) and are much more likely to be overweight than people in the middle and upper classes.
Observing this fact aloud is not considered politic. For example, a few years ago British PM Anna Soubry, who served in the Department of Health, came under fire for observing that government policy and “an abundance of bad food” were causing an epidemic of fat children and low-income people in the UK.
“A third of our children leave primary school overweight or obese…. When I go to my constituency, in fact when I walk around, you can almost now tell somebody’s background by their weight. Obviously, not everybody who is overweight comes from deprived backgrounds but that’s where the propensity lies.”
The U.S. has a significantly higher percentage of its population who classify as obese than the U.K., yet there seems to be even greater reticence here to acknowledge the obesity epidemic. When the problem is acknowledged, we’re often told that the way to alleviate the epidemic is through additional public spending, “such as raising the minimum wage or increasing earned-income tax credits.”
But one wonders if public spending is what is partly fueling the obesity epidemic.
The federal government oversees the nation’s $74 billion food stamp program, formally known as SNAP (the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program). The program (then called the Food Stamp Program) was launched in 1964 after a three-year pilot program, but it did not go nationwide until 1974, at which point participation reached almost 14 million.
What’s interesting is that government data reveals this is almost precisely the same year America’s obesity rise began, as the Bloomberg chart below illustrates.
Could the government’s own policies be fueling the rise? It seems possible.
Government data show the typical American family on food stamps receives about $500 per month to spend on food, and as much as $771. That’s significantly more than my family of five spends per month (we're prudent shoppers, but definitely foodies).
Government data also shows that people on food stamps purchase soda (#1) and bag snacks (#4) at higher rates than non-SNAP households. It certainly seems possible that these unhealthy items are being purchased in larger quantities than they would absent food stamp (or "EBT") income.
Now, there is an old argument that suggests that poor people eat unhealthy food because they cannot afford to eat healthy food. But I’ve always found this argument unpersuasive.
The America Farm Bureau Federation says the price of eggs, arguably the healthiest food on the planet, is $1.32 per dozen. Other highly nutritious foods—beans, rice, and bananas, to name a few—are similarly inexpensive. It seems more likely that most welfare recipients choose to eat unhealthy food because it's easy (no prep), tastes good, is designed to be addictive, and they have the resources to buy large quantities of it thanks to their monthly government benefit.
Since the U.S. food assistance program went nationwide in 1974, the number of Americans collecting assistance has more than tripled, to 45 million today. The increase in food stamp assistance has tracked closely with the rise in obesity rates. While it’s unclear if there's causation behind this correlation, it bears asking: Have federal food assistance policies contributed to the surge in obesity in America?
I don't know the answer to the question, but the thesis is not particularly original.
In 1766, in his tract On the Price of Corn and Management of the Poor, Benjamin Franklin noted that public efforts to alleviate poverty often had perverse effects on the people they were intended to help:
“I am for doing good to the poor, but...I think the best way of doing good to the poor, is not making them easy in poverty, but leading or driving them out of it. I observed...that the more public provisions were made for the poor, the less they provided for themselves, and of course became poorer.”
To Franklin's point, I can think of few things that would make people "easier in their poverty" than a program like SNAP. If SNAP is contributing to the obesity epidemic, is our government doing a great disservice to these people?

Cheap food has less nutritional value. It doesn't require a deep analysis. I can get 100 hamburgers from McDonald's for $100. Cheap, and easy, and no nutrition. What bread is cheapest to buy? White bread, again, no nutritional value. You can get cup of noodles for like a quarter. Some nutrition actually, but also tons of sodium.
Poor people are fat because cheap food is shit. It's that simple.
It also doesn't help that the majority of people in this country are physically addicted to sugar.

Just the same, the whiners need to make up their minds..
They decry poor people eating cheap food, but then b*tch about poor people eating good food.
http://6abc.com/news/no-food-stamps-for-steak-or-lobster/1216644/
Lawmaker wants to ban welfare recipients from buying steak and lobster
A state senator in New York wants to stop food stamp recipients from using their benefits on lobster, steak and candy bars.
Republican state Sen. Patty Ritchie introduced the bill which would restrict the types of purchases that can be made through the state's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), commonly referred to as the food stamp program.
"Many of these items aren't just unhealthy," said Ritchie in a press release announcing the legislation. "They're also expensive."
Ritchie's bill would target what she calls "luxury food items," blocking food stamp recipients from using their benefits to purchase certain foods that are either high-end or not nutritious. The bill's memo lays out some examples: lobster, certain steaks, decorated cakes and energy drinks.
The state of New York already restricts SNAP benefits to unprepared foods -- prohibiting non-essential items including alcohol, cigarettes, pet food, and other non-food items, but Richie's bill would go further, banning foods that are "expensive."
A major obstacle for Ritchie's bill is that federal law doesn't allow states to set restrictions on what people can buy with SNAP benefits.
Thanks to the Food and Nutrition Act of 2008, almost all food items can be purchased with SNAP benefits. The USDA explains on its site the definition of "food" is a part of that 2008 act, so changing the definition would require action by a member of Congress.
If states keep pushing, Congress might be forced to listen. However, according to USDA report, "designating foods as luxury or non-nutritious would be administratively costly and burdensome."

Eggs are expensive, rice isn't very nutritious, bananas are expensive. Beans are the only cheap item on your list aside from the fact that it takes a decent amount of energy to make them edible.
It's not about being lazy. If you had to work 16 hours a day to support your family, do you have time to cook beans for 5 hours till they're soft? Do you even have time to cook anything at that point? Assuming people are just too lazy to prepare their own shit is something an arrogant douchebag would do.
People are poor and cheap food is shit. You can try to come up with other reasons, but that's the biggest cause.

I've always been a big proponent of beans, bacon and biscuits. The Roman legions conquered half the world on that particular diet.
The Mountain men thrived on that diet; (that's one reason why they hunted Grizzlies, they would render the griz fat into lard for their biscuits).
The pioneers used that particular diet on the Wagon trails to settle the West.
Gotta figure when a particular diet has been around for thousands of years, there is a good reason for it.

I actually should have specified brown rice, because white rice is crap. Eggs are not expensive if you shop around, depending if they're organic or not. And there are canned beans in water with no sodium that can either be simmered or eaten right from the can.

Because kids will definitely eat bean in water from the can and brown rice. They aren't going to eat that because chances are they are already addicted to sugar. It's just not a realistic solution.
Subsidize healthy food, like fruits and vegetables using money from increased taxes on processed, sugary, garbage. People will buy healthy food of it is cheaper than the crap.

And I blame the parents for buying the kids all those sweets. Moderation is okay, but these kids are fat because they eat the sugar daily and need more exercise. Better to start them young on a healthy diet. But I do agree with your second paragraph.

I'm not talking about sweets, I'm talking about every food product in stores. Basically all of it has added sugar, especially drinks.
Moderation is okay, but these kids are fat because they eat the sugar daily and need more exercise. Better to start them young on a healthy diet. But I do agree with your second paragraph.
Moderation is fine, but like I said, sugar is added to nearly everything in stores. It's nearly impossible to avoid, and any added sugar is a pathway to addiction. Once the body gets used to it, it craves it and other foods will no longer be appealing. It's really not as easy as you make it out to be. It's a hugely complex problem that won't be solved by just telling people to eat healthier.

Come on, now! Obesity is not a disease. The only exception would be if the person is diagnosed with a thyroid problem. Otherwise, lifestyle changes will eliminate it. And if people don't want to take those steps, they only have themselves to blame.

LMAO ... maybe in New Joisey, egg's are expensive.
I pay .99 cents a dozen for large eggs where I shop. Banana's are .48 cents a pound.
As for beans taking a long time to cook where families had to work 16 hours a day ...
USE A CROCKPOT!
I always cook my beans for a whole day with mine. 12 hours on low, and 12 hours on lower / warm.
They always come out perfect.
For families that have to work 16 hours a day, just load the crockpot before going to work and put it on low ... 16 hours later when they come home, dinner will be ready.

I have news for you. A lot of companies force employees to take a physical each year. If an employee can't pass the physical they are forced onto a higher out of pocket insurance plan until they can meet the requirements.
The new house bill does not exclude anyone with a preexisting condition.

The Healthy Fat You Should Eat Daily. It fights cancer and diabetes
The deeper one looks into nutrition, the more complex it becomes. Balancing the numerous priorities we are told we should have, such as eating foods that are high in antioxidant levels, they need to have the right fats in the right amounts, they need to provide us with energy but also help us recover from workouts, etc. It is very hard to pinpoint the right foods to cover all these bases, however, there are a couple of basic principles you should ask yourself in order to determine if a particular food should be consumed; does it have a TV commercial and/or would my great-great grandmother recognize it?
If the answer to either of these questions is yes, stay away! If you apply this test to Lard, it passes! But haven’t we all heard it’s bad? The name itself sounds like a heart attack waiting to happen. Why? It’s a interesting story. In the early 1900’s the major U.S. company Procter & Gamble was in the business of growing cotton… it was very profitable for them. However, there was a bothersome by-product, cottonseed. Procter & Gamble made the smart business decision to investigate if they could do anything with cottonseed to turn this by-product into a revenue stream. They found that after intense processing they could extract an oil from the seed (it easily turned rancid and was a very unstable fat)… so they hydrogenated it and found that it now had a long shelf life and when it cooled it looked and acted like lard. They decided to call it Crisco. Unfortunately, Crisco is not lard but got lumped into it an became synonymous (very undeserved).
Lard is simply pig fat taken from any area of the pig that has a high concentration of fatty tissue. Lard (in its natural form) has no trans fats, is high (50%) in mono-saturated fat and contains (40%) saturated fat. Saturated fat was once the enemy of nutritionists, however, more recent study’s have turned that on its head with modern research pointing out that saturated fat (when combined with a low carb and sugar diet) can raise HDL cholesterol. If cholesterol is still a concern of yours, the amount of cholesterol in lard should be put into perspective; lard contains about one third the amount of cholesterol as butter. You would need to consume a whole cup of lard to equal the cholesterol from just one egg.
The below chart compares the level of Saturated fat, Mono-saturated fat and poly-saturated fat in Olive oil, Lard, Butter and Coconut oil. You will notice that two of the most fashionable oils right now in nutrition are polar opposites. Olive oil is almost all saturated fat with almost no mono-saturated fat. Conversely, Coconut oil is almost all mono-saturated fat with almost no saturated fat. Lard is the only one to offer both of these healthy fats in moderation.
One of the biggest benefits of lard verses other oils is its high smoke point, creating lower levels of aldehydes (which are a concentration of chemicals that are produced when oil is heated up an starts to break down). This high smoke point results in less free-radicals being consumed into our body. Lard is also a good source of vitamin D, which about 42% of U.S. adults are deficient in.
One important thing to remember is how to identify real lard from the imitations: Lard that is solid a room temperature and/or does not need to be refrigerated DOES have trans fat and does NOT have vitamin D.
Most farmers who raise pigs can help you get lard, but if you don’t happen to live next to pig farm, lard is easy to make! Ask your butcher for some back fat, leaf lard or simply use any pork bacon or pork belly, cut off the fat and render it by cooking it slow over the stove (very low temperature) or in a 250 degree oven for about 6-7 hours. Strain and chill. You now have lard!

I can get a dozen farm eggs for $3.00 a dozen, dollar general has them cheaper if you want that crap, I get at least 6 meals out of a dozen eggs, depending on what I make. Bananas are .45 cents a pound here, I buy Springer Chickens NO antibiotics, ever, for $1.69 cents a pound, I am not big on veggies at all, but I love fruits. I guess if you want to pay for an expensive steak, it takes a lot out of the budget for other things. I personally have not eaten a steak in over 40 years due to cholesterol and triglycerides being high. Wild caught flounder and Mahi is BOGO and when it is, I buy that. So there are ways. Rice is so versatile with Chicken dinners, and you need the carbs in your diet, it is a good filler. Asian people eat more rice than meat and have almost zero instances of breast cancer until they get westernized. They are thin on their Asian diets.
I can see non nutritional things like Soda being blocked.

The fresh market here has meal plans every week, for a family of 4 to eat for exactly that, $20.00 Robot. The meal is planned out and even has desert, something I never buy. They have 4 gourmet burgers, buns, salad, and a dessert for 4 one week, pasta with sauces can be fettuccine or red sauce, garlic bread and salads with a desert again, for same price. All that sugar and carbs turn in to sugar, makes it addictive. Just think about that for a minute.

Yes, their is alot of junk food.
Don't forget to include that keyboards don't provide too much physical workout..
Many spend too much of their life with their face stuck in a screen..

The article also mentions eggs, beans, rice, and bananas being nutritious and inexpensive. But I guess people are too lazy to prepare things and settle for processed food instead.
I have seen that many people do not make themselves time to prepare healthy meals..They are too busy and end up eating fast food junk or some other cheap food..

Because a Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger costs less than a can of turnip greens - that's why.

I'm sure that if being 'fat' was the chief issue on these peoples minds (aside from being, you know, poor) than this convo wouldn't be a thing.
It doesn't seem to be them complaining that they're fat or looking for someone to blame.

Yeah but upgrade to the Baconator and that fu@ker is going to cost you about $10 with the Combo meal!
You ever had a Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger? It's pretty much all bun and no beef! Waste of money if you ask me!

Maybe I missed a page or two: are we talking about poor people or drug addicts?
Because it's a little easier to cut weight when your liver is down for the count.

Being fat has nothing to do with what you eat... It's all BS...
I know Hindu's that eat no meat and are still plump... Yet I know some people that eat like a pig and never gain weight! Yet I know some people that eat somewhat normal and are still fat as h3ll!
It has to do with the amount of exercise a person gets and genetics.. PERIOD.

Case in point: the poor aren't as weight conscious because securing their beach body isn't at the top of their to-do list. That shouldn't surprise anyone considering that there are perfectly able-bodied Americans in the middle class that manage to be fat too.
This is just another one of those arguments of optics: basically, your tax dollars are going to feed the poor, than they should at least look poor. It's a completely emotional argument that has been had for years (as if tax dollars are better used in the Pentagon than in the hands of the American people).
Not in irrational argument at all mind you - but let's call it what it is.

You ever been to the ghetto or the trailer park Risen?
You see all sorts there... fat ones, skinny ones, you name it... The one thing they all have in common is that they all become the environment they live in.. You look at your typical trailer park or ghetto and it's downright depressing! No one gives a $hit!
I've been to my fair share of ghettos and trailer parks and find myself wondering why in the heck these people can stand it! Then I got a blow job from the women there and I soon realized how... But in trying to remove them from that element I soon learned that you can take the girl out of the hood/trailer park, but you can't take the hood/trailer park out of the girl.
It's a lifestyle choice Risen... Plain and simple Brah!

So what does that have to do with them being on something like food stamps as opposed to dying in the streets like they did in the early 30s?
So what if it's a lifestyle choice? Unless you're saying that people who muck up their lives should die in the streets from starvation or let their children be homeless rather then getting government assistance, than you're not saying much of anything.

king, the unemployment rate is 4.4%. 96% of people have jobs. I don't get it, why are 90 million, or 1/3rd, of the people who have jobs unable to feed themselves?

I never said anything about letting people starve, I just said that often times the only people at risk of starving are the dependents of the parents who are making poor lifestyle choices! It's very rare that an adult person without a disability or impairment could come to such a state... Not impossible, but very rare. Sure, there are times where money gets tight but the problem with social services and such are that often times that help won't come soon enough to get them thru the pinch! Ironically this is often the times that will force many to pull themselves up and plan better for the future.
Still there are always outreach centers, food banks and soup lines for these sorts of people... But anyone with any dignity would pass on such things, absent a real crisis or natural disaster anyway.
It's complicated, and I have never been a critic of the good work people do for the needy or the money spent to help people in crisis or hard times! It's the people that game the system that make it hard for the people who are really in need of help... You know, the people who make a living out of cheating the programs... People who take their food stamps and buy drugs instead of food for their family. These are the people I have always despised and spoke poorly of!

He lost his card the moment he made that thread!
So in reality, this thread was started by a liberal!

Remember back in October 2016 when the unemployment rate meant nothing to right-wingers, rather it was the labor participation rate that told the true story?
Remember, real-estate capitalists deserve a nice return on investment. F**k people who work for a living. We need to get more money to the parasites on those workers, the capitalists.
