I had a deck built on to the front of the house last summer. Was told to let it season for a year before staining it. In this heat and humidity stain makes more sense as paint would start to peel. But I did some checking and they have stain that comes in many different shades, I want more of a gray color. Not that ugly brown that I see many decks stained. Will let you know how it turns out.

It all depends.
On wood...technically stain is suppose to sink into the wood and not just adhere to the top of the surface like paint does.
But, there are two types of stain: Solid which covers the entire surface. Or semi-transparent: which on non painted wood will give it color, but still show the grain of the wood, much like stain for wood furniture.
The semi-transparent stain will sink into the wood much better, but you can't use it, because your patio is already painted, and if your patio is painted, the solid stain will sit on top of that old paint and dry and not be able to sink into the wood.
So, there would not be any advantage to using stain over paint at this stage.
a lot of what determines if paint starts to peel off early like this...is was preparation done if needed?, the weather conditions, and if you thinned the paint properly or not.
Where the places have peeled, you want to scape and sand that down, then use a primer on those places and let it dry good, before you repaint...oil based primer will keep those places from raising up again longer, vs. water based primer, but you have use mineral spirits with oil based to thin it if needed, and to clean the brushes with and you use a Chinese bristle brush to apply it.
If this is a concrete patio, they do make a concrete stain...but again, it will be sitting on top of the old paint....so no advantage using stain.

I was a painting contractor for about 17 years.
It would have better perhaps to stain it from the get go. but the stain won't sink into the wood, if it sits on top of painted wood. but Solid stain really doesn't sink into the wood all much better than paint and can still peel.
Remember the golden rule of painting.
you can put oil based paint or stain over water dried based paint or stain...but you can't put water based stain or paint over dried oil based stain or paint...or else it will really peel badly.

What Bumble said. If it has been painted already, it'll have to be painted again unless ALL paint is scraped and sanded and stripped off. Which is a lot of extra work for an exterior deck. I built a house for a painter up your way in Mount Pleasant 25 years ago but I can't remember his name other than Steve. Otherwise, I'd get his number for you so you could call him for advice. Good luck!

First off and as goober knows too...getting all that paint off can be a nightmare and expensive.
If it were me, I wouldn't go thru what it takes to get it all off. I'd just hand scrap off the loose paint with a paint scraper, then feather sand those edges with a sander, like a disc sander used carefully...Then I'd prime those spots, with a strong oil based exterior primer, and I tint the primer to the color of whatever the top coat with be. And give each spots two coats, letting the first coat dry first, oil primer won't take as long to dry as regular oil based paint either.
Then after all that is done, I'd coat it with a good quality water based exterior paint, like Sherwin Williams or Benjamin Moore.
But, you could do this same process and use solid stain instead, but without removing all the paint first, it won't sink in to the wood, as being the advantage of stain on raw wood over paint. As far as basic strength, paint is stronger...but stain on raw wood is less likely to peel as soon...if applied right
As far as thinning goes, the old timers use to say put it on as thick as you can....but that's not good, paint has to cure, not just be dry to the touch. Curing is when the paint bonds to the surface it is on...meaning the side of the paint that actually touches the surface. If its too thick it takes too long to dry and cure...so, if its not cured yet and the humidity rises and sets in at night, starting around 8 p.m. in the summer, the wet side of the paint that's next to the surface that hasn't cured yet, pulls that moisture in thru the dry side of the paint that's facing outward, and then it never really cures right.
So, not only do I thin paint for several reasons...I also won't paint past a certain hour in the afternoon....Cars have extremely thin paint...but hold up good considering.
With a nice grade of Sherwin Williams, even A-100....I ad almost third of a gallon to a gallon of paint...mix it well, look at it on a stick, watch how it falls...etc...if it needs a tad more...I ad it...or not..depending....with cheaper brands, I just mix up as is...then I can just tell how much it needs from experience.
Finally in the old days of the really good paint...you could one coat in many cases, but those days are about gone....so I figure on two coats, unless the colors on what you are painting is close to the color your putting on.
Also...avoid prime in the paint: Paint....they have to remove some of the good stuff in the paint to be able to ad the primer....and that stuff is only meant for nail holes and really small holes, so you don't have to prime first and won't do any good on big patches...and its better to prime first anyway..then let it dry...then paint.

I don't know.. I've been doing a Thompsons oil seal.. The wood is sucking it up where the old paint didn't last through the sun, from the last painting..
Protect it the best you can...

Personally , I like the natural wood look myself, especially on a rustic house.
I'd just use Thompsons water seal in oil base, or some type of clear oil sealer and mix it with semi transparent oil stain to give it color like wood furniture has.

The combination of sun and humidity and rain is hard as Hell on paint in the coastal south where you are. Deep stains will last much longer but you are kind of stuck with repainting yetskimammajamma since all the old paint would be cost prohibitive to completely remove.
But I'm a carpenter and not a professional painter. If you know any pros where you live or have friends that do, pick their brains and maybe get some estimates for a total strip job. All that will cost you is some time. Bee has given you some good tips. Ask a local painter what his thoughts are too.

Most likely the patio wasn't sanded before you put on the second coat of paint on the xlarge patio.. and to get the paint removed would cost a small fortune.. besides the paint would have seeped into the wood over the years and you will not be able to get ti clear enough to stain unless they do a layer of wood sanded ...
you would be better off painting the patio again but remember to sand it first..
GL. . paint should last for many years, not just two years, specially with the new kind of paint that is made just for the outdoors..
..
