Quote from pumpi2:
Thanks for the visual, I needed that.
Really I tried to run, but our house was so small I was trapped. Mom always got me. (never Dad, he just watched) even though I was pretty fast. No way I could've made her laugh, wish I had your parents.

Mom was actually a little more dangerous. She would wet one end of the kitchen towel and come chasing after me with it angrily snapping just a tiny fraction of an inch behind me. Her goal, however, was just to get me heading up to my room.

But she was pretty playful as well. After the towel chase, I would sit at the top of the steps for a long, long time until I thought she must be gone. Slowly and carefully I would creep back down the stairs. Then, just as I peeked around the corner, "SNAP" would go the towel, again barely missing me, and I'd be running back up the stairs as fast as I possibly could. It was great fun!

When my brother and I got bigger than ma,she brought home a baseball bat, slammed the door frame with it and said go ahead,,make me use it on you!
We made damn sure to never give her reason..

We both left home at 16

My cousins lived on a farm and their dad had a old model T. They would drive us all around the farm when they were pre teens.
Crazy fun at that age, I was like ten years old.

Of course not! People had COMMON SENSE then!

I remember rotary dial phones.

Never had a helmet! If you got hurt your mother told you to be more careful next time!

I suppose seatbelts were a good idea, but back in the day only race cars had them.

Staying outside all from dawn to dusk playing.
Party line phones (I was a nosy kid & I'd join in the conversation till I was told to hang up)
Rotary dial phones
No remote on the TV
Running outside on rock, gravel or stickers.(couldn't do that now my feet are way too tender)
I made pets out of our chickens, so much fun when they hatched chicks even tho they flogged the shit outta me for couple days.
Picking & canning figs with my Mama, making jelly with my mom
My Dad teaching me how to shoot
My Dad taking me fishing
When I'd come home from a date my Mom would get on the loud speaker & tell me to get my butt in the house (I was so embarrassed)
No video games
No cellphones
Catching fireflies but we called em Lightning bugs
Riding my bike on makeshift ramps/jumps...no helmets

Great memories

His mom was playing an intimidation game and he and his brother fell for it. They should have gotten rid of that bat the first time she went to bed. When she got up in the morning and angrily demanded that they return her weapon bat, they should have calmly replied, "We haven't seen it. Hey, maybe you left it at the ball park after your last game." No further explanation of any kind should have ever been offered.

And if she brought something else home as a threat, it should have disappeared equally as quickly. It's all about who has leverage and what is that leverage? What can be done to eliminate the other person's leverage? Regardless of what they might say, what is the other person really going to do? She bluffed knowing her kids were chumps for a good bluff.

Being easily intimidated is a good way to spend your whole life being a chump.

You failed to properly analyze the situation. That's perfectly understandable since you were just a kid and probably lacked sufficient experience in such situations.

But your own words were, "When my brother and I got bigger than ma, she brought home a baseball bat, slammed the door frame with it and said, 'Go ahead, make me use it on you!'"

A proper analysis of the situation says that it was your mom who had become frightened of you. She was recognizing that you had gained the upper hand and she was trying to respond accordingly. Eliminating the bat on day one, combined with the calmly-produced sarcastic comment I suggested you should have used when she came to you looking for the bat, would have actually served to cement your position as being the dominant player. All your mom had working for her was the hope that you would be intimidated by the bluff. You held all the cards, failed to realize it, and bought into her bluff.

There was a Coke machine down the street where the bottles slid over to an opening and after 10 cents was deposited, the mechanism locking the bottle would release and you could pull the bottle through. Except that many of us kids in the neighborhood quickly realized that if you gave the bottle a quick tug, followed by a hard tug, no 10 cents were necessary to get yourself a nice, refreshing bottle of Coke. I can't remember the last time I jimmied a machine for a free Coke.
