I decided to drive my Jeep home, instead of getting a tow. I hope I didn't mess up the engine. Checked the oil level, all is good. I haven't been paid from Uncle Sam for travel benefits, so I'm at a loss here. Is it safe to drive my Jeep until I get paid?
Here's what happened: left work. Engine revd high. All normal. Stopped by bank. (One mile) car beeps with check gauged light red. My dash panel light dimmed so I barely saw the oil gauge until it dropped to zero. I kept going 50 mph because by then I was in BFE. Decided to continue driving. All power there still sounding normal. Light goes off, oil gauge goes the other direction. I pull over before it reaches 80. It's too dark and creepy to check oil, so I try to call for advice and was told to just go home. Now I'm wondering if I did damage.....or should I park it? I need to get to work though.......any advice? 2001 Jeep Laredo Grand Cherokee 149,000 miles thanks

It could just be as simple as a bad oil pressure sending unit. If the oil level is full, there are no noises from the engine, you should be ok. However, a manual oil pressure test with a dedicated external mechanical guage is in order to confirm or deny that.

The oil pressure sending unit in my car blew out last year. Dumped 2 quarts of oil up against the firewall, and dripped down on the exhaust system. Smoke pouring out from under my hood. Luckily I was 2 miles away from home when that happened.

Yes, you are correct. I was lucky I was 2 miles away from home. I had just came back from a mini vacation, 2 states away in my car. Had that sender let loose on the highway, 2 things could have happened. One, the engine seize, because it was dumping oil. Or two, my car could have caught fire, due to the oil being sprayed onto the hot exhaust system.

If either of these 2 things had happened, it would have sent me back into a dealership showroom. My car is 10 years old and has 185000 miles on it. No insurance company would pay to fix it at this point.

I am shooting for that 200 K mark. After that, which should come by next year, my low mileage 1 owner gem will more than likely will be on to it's next home.

Well, ordered the oil pressure gauge from Amazon after Auto Zone told me the part number. It was $35; $10 cheaper. It arrived, but it was the WRONG part. Sent it back. Now waiting.
THANK YOU for your all for your time and stories. I love them. I learned so much.

My go to online parts store has been Rock Auto. I have had more bad luck regarding Amazon with their parts cataloging.

I currently have 2 useless chip keys in my possession thanks to Amazon. Rock Auto didn't carry them, and the ones listed thru Amazon are incorrect.

A call in to a dealership got me the correct part number. Now I have to play the waiting game......

You have to remember what JEEP stands for. Here are my favorites:
Just Empty Every Pocket.
Junk. Each & Every Part.
Jalopy. Everyone Else's Parts.

Last I heard, Chrysler Fiat was up for sale, and the Chinese were interested. Great. Not even 10 years out from the bale out, and this happens.....
