sarahgoldsmith Chantilly, VA 46, joined Jan. 2014	My parents were not strict with food. We can what ever we want in the house, as much as we want. We were told not to waste food, so only put as much on your plate as you can eat. If you don't finish you can it eat tomorrow. We tried not to throw out food. We can talk & disagree at the dinner table but not argue or fight. You would say to your parents, "May I be excused when you leave the table?" There are 5 people in the family, if we have 10 mangoes in the house, just eat 2 mangoes, eat only your share. Leave the other food alone unless the other person didnt want to eat it. We can have friends over & offer them snacks, or dinner. Sometimes friends sleeps over & they eat dinner with our family. We don't have to eat dinner together if we have to be somewhere else, like math tutoring, or swimming practice. The whole family don't have to wait to eat dinner with you. I dint like chicken much though...yucky Dad was meaner than hell... I had to sit next to Dad...fml! pleasant?...lol

We were not allowed to talk at the table. We had to eat everything on our plates. It was not pleasant. I never eat at a table, even though I have one. I just let everyone eat wherever they want to when I make a family dinner.

You eat together when you can, when it's possible. Mom doesn't put food on our plate. We serve ourselves. We put as much as we think we can eat. We are told not to throw out food because it's expensive & cost money. We can have 4 bowls of icecream if we want to. They were not strict with food. But none of us were fat.

We did not get soft drinks or cookies, except once a week when our father got paid. He would give us all some money to go to the store and buy them on Saturday. Our mother made three meals a day. We did not have anything like steaks, but we did have good food. But, now I buy whatever I want in the way of foods, because I can afford to do so. I like having lots of treats, just in case I want any.

If they bought only 10 donuts or 10 mangoes, then it's understandable that it's two for each person. If my brother didn't want his donut or his mango, then I can eat it. Some parents limit the food their kids eat, like only one Popsicle per day. They worried about the sugar & the kids getting fat. My parents were not strict with food. [Edited 7/7/2017 8:17:11 PM ]

My father did not make a lot of money, but we still had three meals, and all the other necessities , like a roof over our heads, etc. To this day, I like to eat all vegetables, and most meats. I don't like wild game, because we never ate that. I do not like fried fish, even though we went fishing and caught them. My mother was not the best at taking the bones out of the fish.

I do remember when my parents were no longer together & when I was a teen, we just ate after my mother cooked dinner...not necessarily together at the kitchen table. Later on we migrated to those fold out TV trays (late 70's along with most families)... one constant though was eat what was served (no special orders) and eat everything you take. The modern reality makes it hard to have the whole "family" at a table regularly- but it is nice at least from time to time to sit that way, civilized, with silverware, cloth napkins and conversation.

I also always had dinner sitting at the dining table, in all my relationships... even when I was alone with my two boys.. we always ate at the table... 'Every' Friday after dinner while still at the table the three of us had, what I called a "family meeting" and discussed any stuff, issues, rules that were broken/new or ones that need to be changed or adapted. Each one of us had a turn... I think one of the best things I did. Now I eat wherever I want LOL but when my boys come to dinner we still sit at the table. When I go and visit with them we sit at the table to eat.

lovethelake17 Henderson, NV 58, joined May. 2009	We all sat together and ate. We talked, discussed, laughed, told stories, listened, teased, heard about all our days, even us kids. And yes, it was also a time to have some rather spirited and heated discussions. I think it was great for teaching us to communicate and that emotion was fine and that arguments were just that and that good communication could work anything out. It was also a place to learn manners and how to use various dinner ware and stuff. My family were immigrants and I learned a more European way of eating and using silverware. We were not forced to eat what we didn't like but we did have to taste it. There was very little I liked when I was young because I didn't care for the textures. My aunt didn't force it and allowed me the time to grow into the tastes. She would make what she knew I could handle. I've done the dinner table thing much like she did because its a time for us to connect and enjoy and grow strong together. It's not a place to disconnect and be uncomfortable. Had to laugh the other day--i was telling my daughter how to signal to the wait staff by your silverware if you were done or not. She just asked if I thought the wait staff got that same lesson when the waiter tried to take her plate when she hadn't finished yet.

The kitchen (informal), the dining room (company, formal, holiday, Sunday). There was always a butter dish , a pot of fresh honey&comb,a Ball jar of apple butter, a pitcher of warm, frothy milk, a plate of cat eye biscuits, and cooked/home canned vegetables, green beans or pintos cooked with fatback, fried potatoes, quartered onion, chow chow. Prayers were offered. What you put on your plate you ate. No waste. No seconds. We stayed at table until everyone was finished and then wevasked permission to be excused and the adults had coffee while we kids began washing the dishes, sweeping & mopping the kitchen and taking the slop bucket to the hog trough.
