how do you do good character development?
Allow the reader to "get to know" and learn to like (or dislike) a character as though they were a real person by your descriptive prose (and make them interesting), without the readers "investment" in the characters the story is not "gripping" you have to care about the characters to fully enjoy the story.
also how do they pander to tenage girls, housewives or nerds? lol
They reference things (and characters) that those demographics are interested in...just like targeted marketing.
As I am not a teenage girl, a bored housewife or a f**king nerd I have zero interest in any of those books. I'm sure the demographic(s) they are targeted towards though like them.

I love twilight. The creator is making a new show for 2018. I'm hoping it will be as good as the movies.
Last night I watched where the heart is. Its a great movie. Basically the struggle of a young girl. Her mom leaves her as a child. Her baby's father leaves her at Wal-Mart. She lives in Wal-Mart for 6 weeks and gives birth there. A great man comes along and helps.

Well you've read enough books I'm sure to recognize character building methods:
"Billy was the child of a wh*re, he came screaming into the world unwanted on July 1st 1974 and was promptly abandoned by both his mother and the world."
...right there in 1 sentence you have already set out something that would/could shape his character.
An example of why character building is important
"Dan stabbed Billy to death" Now without any character building no one gives a f**k about Dan or Billy right?
But if you'd spent have the book learning all about Billy and his history/personality etc you might give a damn when he gets stabbed to death. Character building is the most important part of a story as otherwise no one cares.

I write. So I am very involved with the subject area.
Sorry, I know almost nothing about the Twilight series. I have not seen 50 Shades, and I am prejudiced against it, since I see it as essentially a throwback rip off of I Am Curious Yellow, The Story Of O, and 9 and 1/2 Weeks. Never read the potter books (too old) but saw the films with my kids. Much more imaginative than I expected.
I'm watching a series (I'm late to it as usual) that is spectacular. Westworld. I'm old enough to know the ancient 1970's film it's based on, and this new iteration of it has depth and intriguing ideas that the original story never even hinted at.
What I find most involving in any story, isn't the wizzbang stuff, though I do enjoy that. What gets me, is when the author INFORMS me with some new insight into themselves, or myself, or humanity. If the Potter stories, for example, had just been about how cool it was that these children could do real magic, and learned typical little growing-up lessons to be nice to frogs or whatever, they would have been relegated to the trash end of the cheaper kids books section. But they went much further, exploring some of the most fundamentally important keystones of human development, through the use of that well-detailed imaginary subworld. It helped me enjoy them, that I grew up in London.
Something I suggest for you, as a self-teaching experience, is to watch some classic older films that you enjoy, which have crappy sequels that spoil things. There are LOTS of basic lessons in what NOT to do with an otherwise good storyline set up, in those sequels. Things like forgetting why the first story succeeded, wasn't because of the scenes of the shark chewing people, or whatever, what made the GOOD film work was that you cared what happened to the people and the overall story.

I think it's also really important for people to be able to relate to the main character and have likable and slightly less likable qualities to them. Otherwise it doesn't really matter how much effort you put into the character building, if the character is just dislikeable and annoying, people won't care about them or like them.
Especially important for main character because if someone hates a main character they probably won't continue reading.
I thought this is interesting

Yup, exactly. That's why certain demographics like certain books...a lot of young women enjoy "twilight" etc because they can identify with the main character.
Even books where the main character is a villain usually qualify his character with a "softer" side or get the readers empathy by explaining why he is the way he is etc.
Every good story requires good characters...characters should be the basis for any story whatever the subject.
It's like that old saying it's not the destination but the journey that matters..it's the same with good stories, it's not the scenario but the characters within that scenario that makes the story.
A lot of "Amateur" writers spend far too much time on creating the scenario and not the characters resulting in a very forgettable read.

I have not seen 50 shades of grey or really watched twilight in great detail lol.
Westworld is good but I find the main character is a bit of a ditz and boring and it is very much western in nature/setting.
I like watching war movies and horror/survival type.
I watch Game of thrones, the 100, the strain, vikings, westworld, walking dead.
Loved Predator, Predators and alien movies
Horror horror movies I find OK, just gets a bit typical.
also watch anime and read manga. For social qualities I like the mangas and anime more, because it's way more focused on that.

Yeah, Harry Potter is appealing mostly to very young people. Although it depends, I guess.
I love Tolkien, for example, but I don't care much about "The Hobbit" novel. Not cause it is a bad book, far from it. But it is a children's novel really. I did love the first movie though.

The writing style...if you compare the hobbit and lord of the rings the hobbit uses very dumbed down language and is less descriptive.

I agree. But in 99% of the cases, movies or tv series can never match or top a book, IMO.
I learned that when I was very young with Remarque's book "Arch of Triumph" and the 1984 British television film, despite having Anthony Hopkins, Lesley-Anne Down and Donald Pleasence in it. Boy what a complete let down that was for me. I had loved the book.
I love LoTR movies, especially the first one. But obviously is not as good as the books. You say Orlando Bloom, and I don't care much about him either, but I really can't stand Elijah Wood as Frodo. That's a big problem cause I've seen the movie so many times, and I keep pushing forward button any time that Frodo is in it, which means many times.

I wrote a book in my mid 20s.
It was kind of a set of short stories forming an overall main story. About a trainee angel being sent to Earth to help people. Each chapter was one of his "assignments" and his performance was evaluated at the end of each assignment and at the end of book by his boss who would decide if he'd get his wings or not.
That allowed a lot of leeway in the type of individual stories/styles that could be used. One chapter was comedic, one was tragic etc etc.
All very pretentious.
