You can tell after reading only 3 pages if you're going to like the book or not? Did you ever go back and realise you may have stopped reading it too quickly?

I think you can tell pretty fast if an authors' writing style or subject matter doesn't work for you.. This goes pretty quickly into what is a good book and what is a bad book. And the answer is that it's entirely up to the reader. I've had people whose literary taste I really respect recommend books that just didn't do a thing for me. Were they wrong? Was I? Its entirely subjective.

I generally read the first chapter,if by then it has'nt captured my interest,it's back to the library.
However,I have seen some books, that by the third page,I knew it was a dud. In that case, sometimes,I'll go to the end and see what the ending's like.....If that sucks too,it's Good-Bye time for sure......

It varies. I find that I finish one new book out of three. Some I skim, the nonfiction. Some a few pages, some half
way. But I want to tell you that I also walk out of movies, no hard feelings, if I don't like them. I have walked out
after 15 minutes and with 15 minutes to go. If it does not engage me, not spending time on it, book, movie, or
conversation!

I read books like I watch movies - I pass judgement a quarter way through and if it sucks I wait for good scenes or a point and take away the best parts of it. I'm a writer myself so I never give up hope that the author is trying for something. A book or a movie has to be verrrrrrrrrrrrrry bad before I give up on it lol

I try to make it through the first chapter. I read most books I pick up, but there have been a few that had me bored out of my mind and couldn't read more than a paragraph or two at a time. Those usually get set down somewhere never to be read by me again.

I read through the whole book generally in the wild hope that some point it will get better. There have only been maybe two books that I can remember that I ever stopped reading because they were so bad i couldn't take it anymore. I most of the time can tell if i'm gonna be interested in a book by looking at it or recognizing the author.

60 pages. It took 60 pages to get going into a book from a very well known author once, so I made that the standard. I was very close to just tossing the book, but I really did like their other books and just had to see when it was going to get good, because I knew it was, but it was very dull up to that point.

100 pages. If it hasn't got any better by then, it ain't gonna get any better!!! But it drives me wild to have to put a book down without knowing how it ends so I usually go read at least the last chapter and try to figure out the rest of the book.

I can only think of two books that I did'nt finish reading because I couldnt make myself read anymore. One being The Catcher in the Rye, the other being so bad that even the name of it has been forgotten. I can usually tell after just a few pages whether or not I'll like it. but on a judge not a book by its cover philosophy I usually finsh a book before deciding it sucked

Took me +6 months to read my first Edward Rutherford book. Can't remember if it was Londinuim(sp?) or the Forest. It followed 3 families from caveman times to the 1950's. When I needed a rest from it, I switched to another book and when finished with that went back to the Rutherford book. I think I read @ 3 other books. A few years later I read the Prince of Ireland by him and finished it in less then 2 weeks. All his books are excellent. Haven't attempted Ruska yet.

I don't even have to turn the first page most of the time. If I'm not interested in what's going on after a few paragraphs I don't bother reading more, I know I won't like it. No book with a slow start is ever a good book in my opinion... And I have tested this. I've made myself read further a few times, a few chapters, even a few sequals once, and I've never liked a book that didn't have me hooked after the first page.

If it is from an author I have never read before, a few chapters or so. If it is from an author I have previously loved, I will read the whole book.....and then be disappointed if it sucked. Case in point...I am a huge Dean Koontz fan, but the last book I read "Your heart belongs to me" was so horrible that I have taken a break from his books for like a year now. Total disappointment.

If I really don't like the book after I read it I don't read it again. Usually. I haven't quit on abook in years but a book by the Russian guy Feyor Dosteyaski (can't remember how to spell the dude's name obviously) did take a while to get through - it was depressing! Put Elmore Leanard in my hand and I'll stay up all night reading it.
It is strange how you can feel so tuned in to an author after reading his/her books. I read so many Heinlen books I should be able to call him "Bob". Wish he were still with us.

I can and will plow through almost anything.
Lately I've been plowing through existentialists (Hesse and Camus), beat poets (Kerouac and Bukowski), theology and history (Richard Hughes), and Electric Motors and Drives. No matter what, I will always read two books per year for work, no matter how dry they are. It pays off and this one is far better than most engineering texts.
I can only remember two books in 20 years that I started and didn't finish, the Silmarillion by Tolkein and Bleak House by D*ckens. Bleak House was due to work, too much overtime and time on the road. Keeping track of characters in a novel of epic proportions is a gruesome task when you can't come back to it for days at a time. I was similarly overcommitted while trying to tame the terribly dry and disjointed Silmarillion. Who knows if I'll come back to them.
Fyodor Dostoevsky is up next. Depressing? Yes. On the other hand, I often find unique viewpoints from tales of the desperate and destitute products of hopeless circumstances and dystopian societies. My guess is I'll enjoy it.
