August 1, 2009, I was driving my 81 year old mother through the beautiful Black Hills of SD, in my shiny little convertible. We had spent the day driving through the tunnels, and switch backs, enjoying a glorious day. On the trip back we happened to get stuck behind 6 vehicles on a stretch of road within Custer State Park, while a heard of bison traveled around us going the other way. Of course the top was down, but the windows were up when a young 1 to 2 year old male bison traveling in the center of the opposite lane, stopped across from the car. He turned towards the car, dropped his head and rushed the car.
OK, a lot of thoughts went through my mind, a lot more then I thought possible in the 1/10th of a second that had actually passed. I took a deep intake of air, and expected to be flipped into the ditch. But he stopped a hairs width from hitting the car, raised his head and looked me in the eye. By the way the spread of his eyes was about 22 inches, and a very golden brown. Not sure if I got the "bet that woke you up" look, or the "Oh, you are so lucky!" look. But he then just turned and continued down the road in the opposite direction that I was going, had I been moving at all.
"Thank you lord, thank you so very much" just kept running through my mind. All I know, is that once again my guardian angel was working over time!

Back in 83, I was the fifth vehicle, behind the Greyhound Bus that was flipped by a pissed off 750 pound two year old! (two bulls were playing in the middle of the road, and the bus blew its air horn). See you next week!
