Hi Jen
I was in Vietnam in 2004 winter 6 months, in one medium size city " Can Tho" on the Mikong River a central hub for travel and commerce by road and by rivers and canals. Many interesting things to see, I was always in for a trip out of the city to some farm land, trees and birds. I could site down by the Mekong at edge of town and watch big & small boats & Long barges too, rikkity old wood boats and large and small passenger boats stuffed full of people, cargo and bicycles, all boats carrying some kind of cargoes up and down the river.
The motor bike traffic is totally insane, thick 3 moto biks to a lain, 3 lain wide boulevards, loud motor buzzzing sound of thousands of motor bikes, all competing for space, all honking there horns at each other for space from 6: am until 12: midnight (mind deafening sound) at times a bicycle goes by and a the occasional car. People really don't obey the basic traffic laws (common sense of rules) Some go speed wiving amongst the slower drivers, drivers entering cross traffic honking their way throw, they even drive against oncoming traffic, like to turn around and get back to the store they just passed up........ and it's all normal to them...lol
I also was getting around daily on the back of a fiends Honda motor bike in all that traffic, honking heat & humidity too, Holidays where X crazzzy.
I also witnessed many small accidents injured people laying on the pavement a wrecked moto bikes hating for a med-van to come get the injured, police standing in mid traffic to divert oncoming traffic, he probably does not knowing how to perform any First-Aid on bleeding / injured persons laying in the street. Primitive country. Great experience !!!
[[ Added: 99% plus, of motor bike drivers / riders do not where helmets. Some do, those that drive on main hi-ways from city to city do use them. Maybe it has been changing there now.]]
I never went north, I just visited a small town 4 bus, south of my city, where there was a very special nice Buddhist Pagoda, very old one, and monks lived there as well, it had as well the only la mans school for the monks in all of Vietnam, Monks attend dally classes 5 day weekly, Math, read & write, History, Geography, Vietnamese language (as some were Cambodian & others)
My destiny was perfect, wile entering the Pagoda grounds, a monk invited me for a coffee at the Pagoda grounds canteen and we sate an talked for a wile, he befriended me, showed me around the grounds and we had some discussions. Later we walked a shot ways to the school and he showed me more and I met his feiends.
"""" WE are all teachers ~ We are all students """"
He spoke rather good English, a little rusty, as he had not come across an English speaking person for almost 4 years. Almost no western / tourist ever go to this Buddhist Pagoda. After that in same town, of to the Bat Pagoda, where large black bats live in the trees all around the Pagoda , as the monks will not harm them, therefor the bats know they have a sanctuary of peace there. Then another 6 day nice trip spent at a beach area with lots fish sellers and sea food restaurants and a Buddhist Temple in a cave in a peaceful sandy cove by the open sea.
There where other side travel adventures in Vietnam as well !
I got some photograph & painting don thoe !
I don't like cites, so I was glad to get out of that city eventually, here to the country side in the USA.
.

bart88, i was in vietnam in 69-70, but i was 20 years old. are you saying you were drafted at age 15, went to vietnam at age 16 and was discharged at age 17? sorry, but i'm just confused. don't think i could go back and face them after participating in the brutality committed against them.

I was there in 69 & 70.
I was in Can Tho twice. First time we flew in and changed A/C and went west to Chi Lang on the Cambodian border. The next time I came in to the 3rd Surg Hospital by chopper and left about 10 days later by C130 on my way to the Cam Rahn Bay convelesent center.
Some day I'd very much like to go back, but I refuse to do so as long as the commies are running the country - Unless I again had a no bag limit hunting liscense!
