For the first time in a long time, I felt inspired last night by Obama's words. How did you guys feel about the speech.

Caroline Kennedy has declared for Obama. She said that she felt for the first time inspired by Obama the same way people had explained her father inspired people. (Sorry, the grammar of that sentence is awful, hope you understood!) I think that is a great endorsement~

jeannie, didn't hear the speech but will read the text as soon as I can today. Maybe I can find a replay of it. I watched Obama on This Week with George Stephanopoulis this morning and also listened to McCain on Meet the Press. Good appearances for both.

I am expecting Ted Kennedy to announce his support for Obama any day now.

I'm leaning that way as well. I am weary of the "slash and burn" "win at all costs" politics of the Clintons.

I want to be inspired like so many were by the Kennedys - John and Bobby.

I think Obama is the candidate of change, inspiration, and politics for a new day.

The next 2 weeks will be critical. The race will be essentially over by mid/late February.

Peace, Pam

Update: I watched the Obama speech online at msnbc, which offers great coverage and good analysis. Check it out! The speech was inspiring and beautifully delivered.

I am beginning to believe that you are right. I think the Clintons have made some mistakes that can't be fixed. Of course, it will all depend on how it's handled. Obama seems to be rising to the top...inspiring and clean. We see what happens! It's really great fun.

You are right if the whites dont go for the fear factor that Billaray is putting out there. Well at least they are fair. They made fools out of the blacks, now they want to make fools out of the whites( They will leve no stone unturned)

Noone ever has to worry about spelling. I heard Obama's speech. It was incredible. I never heard a man before with such wisdom; and what a man to endorse him with such integrity as Ted Kennedy along with Caroline. That means absolutely everything. America wants change. I mean a drastic change. Don't get me wrong, I like Hillary, but what ruined it for her, was her loud mouth husband Bill. He mentioned that Obama was going back to the Jesse Jackson era. You do not know how much I hate this race issue. I like to slap people upside the head when they talk crap like that. Obama did fantastic about ignoring the race issue and stayed on the topics that America needs change, the economy, healthcare, etc. He went about it a different way. In our newspaper here in upstate, NY, our front headline said, Is America Ready For a Black President? Our security guard was reading the newspaper. I put my head down as william said to me, good morning lisa how are you darlin? I said hi william how are you? I shed a tear. William is an African American male. I am crying as I speak. I don't even know what william was thinking. What ashame what this country has come to. I know hillary already won new york, florida, and california. Those are the most important states with the most delegates. I just dont get why the hispanics are voting for hillary. I think Ted Kennedy came in just in time to get out there and speak on Obama's behalf to get through the hispanic's minds that this is a time for change, that the clinton era is over, and it is time for a new america... amen.

lisa...hi! glad to see you...I hope we get universal healthcare...cheap enough if you want it, and republican support...i'm just not sure he is the best candidate.
but if he wins then i'll support him hands down over any republican. he'll pull out of iraq. support a high minimum wage...but so will hillary. how does success for a woman seem
like she is pushing too hard...a woman just needs to cool it and not show strength, but not too much emotion, and not fight back, but better fight back...too weak, but not too strong..how do you as a woman do it? the males aren't held to any of those criteria

Obama is a gifted speaker, which is a HUGE difference from the current occupant of the White House. Now there's an idiot.

His last State of the Union address is tonight...no doubt full of poor syntax and false promises.

Obama's speech in South Carolina will be used for sound bites for a long time.

Welcome, Lisa!! Glad you have joined us here.

I'll presume to speak for our little group here and say ... we're happy to hear your viewpoints, even if you don't agree with us. We're grown-ups here. Keep us posted about what is happening politically there in upstate New York.

The Clintons? He was right in the middle with his arms around both Bill and Hillary. If its safe to say they did'nt know him. And thats what she said. Is it also safe to say Obama may not have known him like that?(a slum lord)I hear what you are saying about the
treatment of women running for office. I agree with you. Do you think two wrongs make a right or bring a balance? I say this one more time. My problem with the billarays is I cannot get behind someone who will do ANYTHING to win.Anything means just that. Next Bill

I'm sure the experience was exhilirating for you both. Politics is exciting and at a campaign event, the excitement is contagious. How nice you could both enjoy the experience together!

Derrick and his son also have some interesting conversations about the politicians and the issues.

My daughter and I have had several good conversations about the issues and the candidates.

Parents and children together - learning the issues and candidates, and deciding who the best candidate is. How totally cool!

It will be interesting to see who Edwards chooses to support in the coming weeks - or months. But all of a sudden, POVERTY is on the other candidtes' lips. As long as Edwards stays neutral, they will each jockey for his support. Since poverty is Edwards' signature issue, he would be wise to withold his support for a while to give the issues time to get some play.

Full disclosue: I am a social worker; anytime a politician seriously talks about poverty and considers real issues that affect real poor people, I am happy.

Hi all and yes Pam Derrick and I do talk alot.He told me today he did'nt think Obama would win. He thinks he should but America still has problems with a persons race. He thinks that it matters not how well you can do your job, if you are black your changes will never be what they should be. He also thinks Americans are so genda and color focas
that the Rep. will get back in office. Infact he thinks White men with power will see to it.I tryed telling him still never give up the dream. He said He wont, but its clear the dream is along way off. When he ask me if he could be honest about something and I said yes this is what he said to me.( Whites think they will loose or give up control if they do the right things in life. That they dont want america to change.Power would shift and
this makes them have fear.In short its nice to be on top of the hill and they are never
going to share that power. I dont mean all white people dad, but the ones who have the control. Its funny but the whites that are in the same boat as blacks will still vote for the ones who hurts them just to always feel better than blacks.) He went on to point out
A black person would have to get strate A's all through school and still not be good enought. But Bush was a C. student and could be President. The only way blacks can make it is to fall into that number where they need so many of us to look good. With hard work we may be in the right place at the right time. Thats our brake. Did'nt know what to say to him. All I could say is never give up. What do you think about what he said? I worry
because how many young black and young girl of any color feel this way.

Derrick,
Yes, for a country build on diversity we are very, very afraid of people who are different than white America. That's too bad. But, and you and I know, that's an attitude based on fear. Today when I was on campus I read a sign that someone had in their back window. It's a quote from Obama's speech. Of course, I can't remember the whole thing but he said we need to move from fear to hope...isn't that just what we have been talking about. If only we could do that. It's white fear of the unknown, fear that we might get what's coming to us, fear of loss of power. I think that Obama has more than that to offer. He is a man for all people if we can just listen and hear what he says. Tell your son that all we can do is try, what's that going to hurt? The worst thing that can happen is that the Rep. will win and then it will just be more of the same. We lived and we will live to see anoter president. Don't be afraid to say what you think!

I think every people go through times of great change and I think this is our time. Now, I also have to say that there is no way that I can understand what a young black man goes through in this country. I know he has to be twice as good as a young white man and that's not fair and definitely not right. Don't be afraid, Derrick,jr., work in small ways, speak up in class, peacefully, encourage others to see what the truth is and to not be afraid.

Don't worry about Bush being a dummy...I don't know how that ever sold to anyone. I guess we just have to buy that the American public is dumb and wanted someone like themselves. Personally, I think the President should be the smartest person going. That's why I voted for Clinton and defended him all those years. I'm done with that now, I can't defend him any more.

You are right to tell your son that this is the time. It is. If not now, when? This man can make a difference in this country for the African American community and everyone else. Young Derrick, the most important thing for you to do is to not loose hope. Work in small ways. Learn all you can and use that when you are an adult to work for your community and for mine. Don't be afraid because as we have seen, fear turns to hate and that improves nothing. Please know that all the white community is not bad. My heart cries for young black people and I wish I could change things for you but change will come if we all work together.

OK, that's enough preaching...I'm sure your son will think I'm nuts...really I'm not!

trying you can belive that.My dad always say I do'nt have a right to give up because so many have been put to death so that I can live the way I do today. He said it is my job to do my best. So I wont quit because I love my dad and myself.

You are a good kid. Of course, there are good and bad people everywhere. It's your job to be one of the good ones. I think you have a very good start! Please don't give up. Look to those who went before you. I don't know your Dad but I'll bet he is a pretty good example. Just remember that fear and hate get you nothing but grief. Love the enemy.

Now, let's celebrate this strong, intelligent, great Black Man. If we all get behind him maybe we can see some more possitive changes during your lifetime. Be an agent for change, Derrick. That will make us all proud!

Its my turn, now, derrick and derrick, jr. ...

You two are great examples of what is happening in this country. Two men who are informed and engaged in learning more, standing up for what you believe and reaching out to others in this political process. I applaud you both.

My daughter (17) is starting to mix it up with her friends about this political race. She challenges them to state their positions and what they believe and challenges them to know what the politicians believe and support. She is something!

Derrick, Jr, you would like her and she would like you. She has no patience for stupid or lazy people. And her friends are of different races, ethnic groups and religions. Some of her best friends now are arabic-speaking muslims. (Some are American-born, too.) She takes a lot of crap for these friendships. She stands up to it, though. She's a lot more mature and stronger than I was at her age.

I suspect Derrick, Jr, you are made of similar stuff. Your generation is more aware than ours was. You are exposed to more media than we were. You are challenged more in school than we were. At least I think so.

Using the intelligence you are born with, being proud to be seen as smart, working hard, striving to be more, having goals...these have always been the hallmarks of success. For people of color - and for women of all colors - working hard always required an extra effort.

Let them underestimate us. They do so at their own peril! White men's privilege will not be surrendered willingly. We will have to fight for every achievement. But we're not afraid of hard work or fighting. We know how to do both and will to achieve our goals.

One day at a time. One fight at a time. One success at a time.

Derrick - both of you - I'm proud to know you!

Peace, Pam

Hi all, I let my son read what you said to him and I want to thank you all. Sometimes its good for him to hesr from more than me.I too am happy to see yesterday come to a end.
Today is a new day and we can not stop the push for a better world. Pam you are right. Your daughter and my son would get along. Sounds like they both are good kids who thinkl for themselves. They are the times to come. Gaill that other site has sick people on it. Think I will leave them to themselves. No time for trash. They have problems with those that do'nt agree. They are a bunch of killers. Its hard for me to belive the ones who want to kill the most are of color The one girl who has a problem with you is off the hook. The black man that was in the middle east is a fool. The site is where they need to be. I wonder is these two understand the same people who agree with them would vote to kill them because of their color. I think they are square pegs trying to fit into round holes. Trying to pass somewhere where they will never fit. They are young and has time to grow. I hope they they do. I saw you were there once Pam.too much for you there?Did'nt see you there too much. I understand. they are not your type of people from what I can see.

derrick, I try to go where there is respect, tolerance, and positive energy. I follow current events and have tried to go into some threads in that forum group. But the intolerance, disrespect and and blatant racism, sexism and downright hatred I see there stuns me and I exit. Quickly.

I know those people exist and have pretty much decided, like you, that they are where they need to be and I'll stay away from them.

I have wondered from time to time if the US government could/would just give these haters a state of their own (like what they did to the native Americans - put them on a reservation), where only angry, racist, sexist white people could live, maybe the rest of us would have a better quality of life.

In their world, they could do all of the jobs themselves (including cutting grass, digging ditches, every dirty, nasty job that is now done by non-whites who have to accept less than ideal work and less than a living wage), pay whatever salaries "the market would bear," charge whatever prices "the market will bear," and never have any race to scapegoat. I would guarantee you, though, within a short period of time, they would identify a new group to scapegoat - maybe blued eyed people, or people with curly hair, or left-handed people, or those with lower IQs, or - heaven-forbid, offspring of some of their whitebread citizens who are gay or lesbian. Horrors! And within their superior society. Why they would drum them out and off the reservation. Rid themselves of all undesirables.

You see how foolish they are? Even in my imagination, which isn't so imaginary, is it?

Anyway, I stay away from that toxic stuff. Would rather hang with you all!

Peace. Pam
