This should be a great question for you guitarists out there. I know that rock guitar uses a lot of gadgets and/or pedals, but is very expressive and technical. Jazz guitar is all about control, timing, and improvisation. Blues guitar is all about conveying feel and is also very expressive, but doesn't utilize many gadgets and/or pedals. Which style is the most difficult to play, and why do you think so?

I am a keyboardist by trade and have played since 1962, but my second instrument is the guitar. Having played both for over fourty-five years, and having played almost every style, at one time or another, I would have to vote for jazz. However, I played an acoustic all those years, having bought my first electric, a Strat, in 2007. I had a cheap Harmony in the late Sixties, but I smashed it on stage one night. My point is, that to me, jamming along with the jazz channel (Direct TV, pumped thru my stereo), isn't that hard. Once you find the position the changes are natural. I think it comes more natural to me due to my piano knowledge. This is an edge, I believe, I have over some guitarists. For me, playing leads to country rock or southern rock is more difficult than jazz. I just can't "feel the grove" in those country rock tunes.

In jazz you have to be constantly analyzing what the song is doing.

I know very accomplished rockers who have difficulty with jazz. I also know very accomplished jazz players who can't rock. Sometimes it's difficult to differentiate rock from blues. Flamenco? Who was that guy who wore a black hat, in that infomercial for an acoustic/electric guitar with lessons? Not Zorro, not Fabio, not Toto...UGH! What is his name? He played some pretty mean flamenco; but when it came time to rock.....YIKES!
I guess it's all what you're used to.

Perfect point, he goes by 'Esteban'-which is Spanish for Steven. I don't know his last name but He may be the one who stole my idenity (soc.sec. #) and took out a whole shit load of credit using the spanish form of my name. When I tried to buy a new car they asked me about some unpaid bills on my credit report. I said let me look at that...I've never been to those states, and do I look like an Esteban!
I guess it's all what you're used to.

Jazz is all about spontanuity. I'd say Latin styles are the toughest causes there's so many variations. If you can pull off a boleria shifting into a rhumba then you'll find that rock and jazz are cake

None of those options are the hardest.
Hardest would probably be speed metal and flamenco.

Having played rock for years, I got into blues 2 yrs ago and it's like learning a new language. I'm having to learn a whole new set of techniques. Even my grip on the neck comes into question.

I'd say jazz...lotta room for improvisation and you have to have a huge bag of tricks so you dont repeat yourself, because people pay very close attention to that type thing.
Speed metal(technical death metal, math metal, whatever)is difficut but structured.Repetition and practice, and you can run the marathon.
Flamenco too.I dont know how structured it is,but it's difficult to learn and even be good, much less tecnically amazing.

Well out of three options id say jazz if its progrssive. Jan Ackerman is an incredible progressive jazz guitarist, a friend showed me a video ad I was stunned. I've been playing guitar about 25 yrs and have been in many bands here In denver doi.g originals and covers and I teach. Erupton, fligbt o wounded bumble bee, satriani, cliffs of dover etc no problem. But this Jan Ackerman. .. wow.
Now the hardest outside of the choices classical I think. My first three years were spent learning it before I even picked up a pick. Try learning moonlight sonata in its proper key or the swan, or bachs prelude...all demand icredible discipline and perfection.
Flamenco or spanish style is tough to like malaguena, or asturias-leyenda (commonly used in commercials particuliarly Lexus. Or recuerdos de la alhambra, good luck with that one. All demand a masterful technique one can only achieve in a decade minimally.

It depends on the player. If you get down blues then rock can be easy. Jazz can get dificult if you dont know much about chords, scales and theory. I personally am baffled by the traditional Flamenco Guitar Players. Im a pretty good lead guitarist and I wish I could play half as good as them.

It would have to be Jazz, although all levels can be played at exceptional levels if you are good enough... but even beginner Jazz starts out more difficult to play... unless you have the "Jazz Gift" and it just flows out of you. But it is so worth the effort!

Metal fusion is the most difficult to play. It combines techniques from all genres. Precise movements and strong concentration are required. Utilizes many styles. Very similar to fusion, but uses more minor key tonality and guitar effects.
