I was diagnosed with ataxia in 08 and had "no clues" what it was. Since then i am starting to notice the symptoms like walking like I'm drunk and terrible balance.I was told that this will,eventually cause me not to be able to walk. It's a pretty scarey thought...

I'm deaf and knows English sign language. ASL is pretty ok for me.  great to know that I'm not only one on here

I have a friend who is oral Deaf - she came here from Brazil and speaks both English and Portuguese. She also knows both the sign language used in Brazil and ASL here. I'm amazed at how well she manages both - but she's much younger than I and with great flexibility. So I'm happy to see you learning ASL. Most of the Deaf Community uses ASL, but SEE is much better for education and court - although most of the Deaf in court speak ASL. Oy vey... makes it difficult as ASL is not as flexible as SEE in situations such as that. It is really nice that you are here.

I was curious about Ataxia. I thought it was a poison in the system. I just read it has to do with the neurological system. That is a pretty scary diagnosis.
The National Ataxia Foundation has support groups you may want to check out.

Is it more noticeable at certain times? When you are tired, for instance?

I am hearing impaired, not hard of hearing. I hear, but often do not understand. Let me clarify, when fact to face, I hear, but often have difficulty understanding. Speaking loudly generally doesn't help. Speaking slower, looking at me and keeping hands away from face helps tremendously, though. Unfortunately, I am not a good candidate for aides, so I lip read as best as I can.

I have no high pitch hearing and profound hearing loss in both ears. If someone is speaking behind me chances are I am not going to hear, but when face to face I hear but not always understand. It is very frustrating, to say the least. Many years ago I had aides, but they did not help. They amplified, but didn't help me understand. Last year when I saw my audiologist I asked about them and he said they would not be beneficial. I was hoping with modern technology something may have changed. I do not sign, but looking into classes.

My son too had epilepsy until he was about ten, then one day, the seizures suddenly stopped. He still has learning disabilities with memory issues.
We make lists, laminate the ones you can never forget. Also, keep a notebook to keep track of other important things that change and as a record of events to look back on. If you should ever need to recall some details later. I personally love my PDA and Bluetooth keyboard.

Well I am not on disability...yet...but I have type one diabetes, fibromyalgia, migraines, bipolar, ADHD, Dyslexia, low thyroid I really have a very long list...
I have also been tested for RA, Lupus, Cushings and many other issues but the test come back normal but the doctor said its just a matter of time because I have all the symptoms...Mean while finding a doctor to treat pain is like trying to find a speck of salt in the texas dusty wind!
 
You could relocate to Colorado, we have new medicine approved to help with your pain management needs. You have to get your doctor to approve your prescription for medical marijuana, or pay one here for $50.00 and $35.00 for State fee. It takes 4-6 weeks to get your license from the State.

Panic disorder for many years. Physical is chronic neck and upper back pain. Neck surgery made it worse. Live in pain daily from severe muscle spasms. Also have bad tendons elbows, shoulder, and now 2 knees tore cartilage. That led to depression. Oh well SMH

i Have MS . i delt with depression anxitity. every emotion you can think of when I was diagnosed. Plus what come with MS is not fun. was diagnosed in 05. But had simtoms sence 15yrs old. 6 yrs ago i thought i was going into wheelchair. now i'm hiking ,fishing again. Thanks to a new treatment that is working wonders for me. Life is short so make the most out of it each day....
