Root Rot
Root rot is actually a common name for one of several fungus diseases. It is aggravated by poor drainage, overwatering and excessive rain. It is extremely difficult to control the fungus that leads to root rot.
Symptoms
Signs of root rot include brown lesions along the stem at the soil line. These lesions will eventually girdle the plant. A brown discoloration of the vascular tissue can be seen if the main stem or tap root is cut open.
Control
While the fungus is difficult to control, cultural practices can be effective. Do not plant tomatoes in low-lying areas where water collects after rains. Till and amend soil before planting to provide good drainage.
