It's not fertilizer burn, mold, or overwatering or underwatering. It's something that causes the upper and lower green dermis of the leaf to slough off leaving the thin membrane that supports the leaf structure. The leaf then looks like a cellophane double layer until it dries up and the whole leaf turns black. What the heck is causing this annabelle hydrangea to get dead leaves?

Thanks for this info. I was unaware of the radio show and will check it out online. In the meantime, I've collected samples and am planning on hopefully getting some of the leaves to some expert over at NC State Univ. this week. You're right about the strange growing season -- flowers AND veggies.

Checked with a plant pathologist. The Annabelle has fungus. It might have come in with a new mulch laid down in spring. Rx: collect all severely damaged leaves from the plant and from the ground and dispose. Spray infected plant AND neighbor hydrangeas with a fungicide every two weeks. Minimize mister irrigation or splashing water on leaves.
