I moved to a rural area and have lousy choices for internet. I first had dial up but the phone lines coming out to my home are very old and it was too slow and intermittent.)
(I tried for a solid week to DL one song... I was logged on for a solid week and never did get the song.
I then bit the bullet and bought the equipment for satellite. Its expensive and still is very limiting. I pay $55.90 for limited uploads and downloads.
I recently saw someone using a Verizon hot spot/mifi... I guess thats what its called.
My question is, Does it work off of cell towers, In other words, If I have cell reception at my home, will one of those work at my home?
Can anyone give me any input on this type of internet..... good or bad.
thanks.

yes it works off cell towers.. in some cases.
there are wireless internet companies and coverage and usability varies greatly as do the cost and plans. Clearwire I think is one of the outfits.
There is also the possibility of using your cell phone as a hotspot depending on if it is a smart phone and your data package. using your cell phone is called "tethering"

This is a real viable option, and I think if you get a good 3G signal
it would work good for you!
Now if you like to download movies(1gb or more), then your allotment of Mb's
will excede the maximum for your plan very quickly.
Music files are relatively small, and shouldnt be a problem.

I use Verizon mobile broadband with my old cell phone, an LG env3, as a modem. It's an extra $30/month. I did a little research and they offer about double the mobile broadband speed of the other providers here.
I have 3G coverage here and on good days I'll get 1 Megabit/second or about 30 times faster than dial-up. At bad times, and they're fairly predictable, I only get about 100 Kilobits/second. I can only stream youtube videos on the better than average days. I can't do hulu or anything like that but the extra mobility (mostly) compensates for the slower speed.
Living here behind the Zion Curtain means there aren't that many decent Wi-Fi hotspots to hang out. I wish there was a good place to watch the Tour de France with wi-fi and a beer or at least a great cup of coffee but there isn't. Bars aren't allowed to open that early. The two good coffee shops don't have TV's. And there's only a few restaurants open for breakfast and they don't have TV's either. I guess something has to give when I'm unwilling to pay $40-60/month for an extra couple of watchable hours per week.

Clearwire is another Cell based ISP. They usually partner with Sprint, but you can get their service through other carriers. They use the spectrum given up by the TV broadcasters so there is no line of sight issues.
Cell based ISPs should give you enough bandwidth to watch streaming TV/Movies. However, as stated above, data charges can add up if you download lots of media. Songs are OK, movies are huge files.

I was on a hiking trip recently.... I think the difference between mifi and satelite is reliability... will one or the other gatuantee reliable speeds.

The biggest issue with Satellite is the Latency. Typically ground based ISPs, including Wireless, are in the 20 to 100 ms range. Satellite can be in the 240 or more ms range. This kills VOIP operations, VPNs and just about every other Web based application where data has to go back and forth. In other words, gaming online. Surfing and streaming is not too bad and quite tolerable for those purposes.
However if you don't have a choice, some Internet is better than no Internet.
