I'm a Master Naturalist and avid gardener. I tutored my 74yr mother to get her Master Gardener cert. Health precluded me attending the classes during that time.

Well as opposed to being a slave to the garden the master gardener should be using Permanent Culture where nature does the work and you reap the rewards. Would like to meet any perma culture fans in Northwest.

Hi,
I am a Certified Master Gardener. I took classes at a Michigan State ext. office in Howell, MI. It was very interesting and had a new topic and speaker every day.

Hard to find it but Sluggo works great. Don't salt your garden.

Any gardeners here know why my beefstake and better boy mater plants get big,and even grow fast, but my maters are small?
Maybe in need something better than miracle grow?
And does anybody know how to sucker mater plants.
I can take suckers off tobacco plants, but i'd like to learn proper trimming of mater and pumpkin plants.

No No No,garden was a disaster this year, and i'm preparing for next year, but on maters(love that word),i found out the proper way to sucker them, but still not quite sure of what direction to go now.
As we know, suckers take some nutrients and energy from the overall plant and maters, but i was also reminded that the suckers also produce maters as well, and some say with the right care, you can leave the suckers, and still get full size maters, plus in a bigger amount,so i will probebly just expeirment next year, with a split between suckered amd non suckered,to see for myself what is best.

suckers will produce a crop ... but they are not as good as the the main plant fruit .... I have found suckers will be smaller and 'harder' .... I would sucker the main vine as soon as suckers began to give the plant the best nutrients and water supply for a healthier harvest ... and half-sucker the main vine as the plant matured ...... but that s just my opinion .... and Miracle Gro was mentioned ... but relying on Miracle Gro is a fool's quest .... Miracle Gro will make a larger plant but the fruit suffers for it ..... I am always stingy with Miracle Gro on my 'maters .... but I sure do fertilize my plants well with seasoned cow manure.

Thanks cupocheer, and you sound right to me,so i'll give your way a try next year, and on the miracle gro, seems like my plants did grow too fast, and i noticed where my brother had two plants of his own, they grew a lot slower, but acceptable with pure water, but not many maters, but slower growing and some doodie, gotcha

Good luck with your crop next year, Rook.
A lot of the water plants (tomatoes, cukes, squash) actually suffered this year because of the excessive rainfall. Too much water is not good for 'maters, either.
Hopefully, next year's growing season will produce a bumper crop.

We got so much rain here, that about 75% of my maters got bloom rot,and weeds took over, because of all the rain and mud,and not being able to catch it dry,and so good luck with your garden next year as well.
