I just moved into my home last spring and steady went to work on landscaping. I planted butterfly bushes, bearded tongue, a hibiscus tree, etc. As summer approached, the freqruence from my yard was amazing in the breeze. I planted lilac trees as well, but they didn't bloom. I am curious, how long should I wait prior to expecting them to sprout? Also, I want to plant shrubs that can withstand full sun but can thrive and provide great privacy. Any tips? Finally, my front room has vaulted ceilings with a huge window at the very top of the wall (20 ft)- it is full sun and I am looking for a fast growing tree to provide shade. Any tips?

(Sugar) Maple... fast growing, good shade. Don't plant too close to house, driveway, or sewer system.

Is there another option? My front yard is 1/4 acre but the sewer line is dead center of the yard as is the main fire hydrant for the sub division

There are countless container gardening ideas, but here are a few to get the wheels turning.

Potatoes: You can grow your own potatoes in a trash can or old tires. Really.

Start with a 32 gallon plastic trash can and drill holes in the bottom as well as into the sides a few inches up to provide drainage.

Fill the trash can about 2/3 full with good potting soil mixed with compost. Now, plant your seed potatoes about 5 inches apart. Cover them with a few inches of soil and put the trash can in an area that gets full sun for 6-8 hours a day. Water enough to keep the soil moist, but not soggy.

As the potato plants grow, add more compost to bury the stem (but not the leaves). Let your plants continue growing until they wither and turn brown (usually late August or so). Now you can dump out the trash can and harvest your potatoes.

If you choose to use tires, hammer a piece of rebar into the ground as sort of an anchor. Throw a tire over the rebar and fill it with soil/compost. As the plant grows, you will have to keep adding tires and compost. Harvest will involve unstacking the tires (which is why I think a trash can is easier).

Brush off the dirt to store harvested potatoes, but don’t wash them until you are ready to eat them. Store potatoes in a cool, dark, dry place. Do not store them with apples or they will spoil faster.

The soil from your potatoes can be reused, but not for growing more potatoes, tomatoes, peppers or eggplant because this could cause those plants to have disease problems.

Tomatoes: You can grow large tomato plants in large pots. It is best to plant one plant per pot so they have enough space. The easier way to go is to plant cherry tomatoes. They seem to take better to containers and always seem to provide a bountiful harvest.

Again, place pots in a location with full sun. Keep them well watered. Sporadic watering can cause tomatoes to split. If ground space is a premium, try planting cherry tomatoes in hanging baskets.

Strawberries: You’ve probably seen strawberry pots at a garden center before and these can work great. Strawberries will also do well in a pot or hanging basket. Whatever you use, make sure it has good drainage and is located in full sun.

Beans: You can grow bush beans in a pot or pole beans in a long box with a trellis (or something that the beans can climb). You can do the same with cucumbers, planting a bush type in a pot.

Lettuce: Leaf lettuce is easy to grow in containers.

Herbs: You can also grow a variety of herbs in pots.

This isn’t an exclusive list of container gardening ideas, because many other types of vegetables can be grown in containers, as long as they have good drainage and full sun.

Use these ideas to plan your own container garden. Now is a great time to think about what you’d like to grow while accumulating containers

I really appreciated the info on planting food/herbs. Anyone else have more ideas . . . I think this is the year I try to have some kind of garden . . . just hope that the local government doesn't give me grief. You know, in some places growing your own food is banned. YES, here in the United States!!!!

Try for nice color bushes @ 3 to 6 foot tall. " Farcithea bush " with bright yellow blossoms in first of spring ( April) time AND there is the " Fire Bush " for a nice reddish color and I think they get even redder in the fall.

As for flowering trees, check out, " Ornamental Plumb' with blossoms and reddish colored leaves, and the " Catalpa trees " << they get rather big depending ) also for a bright yellow green leaf look try a " Sun Burst Locust tree " there not the best for shade, also the " Tulip Tree" and " Magnolia Blooming Bush "

A green thump is the sound you hear after someone smokes to much wacky tobaccy and falls down.

Shallow roots? River Birch has shallow roots, they will grow out instead of down. If foundation and pipes are a concern, would look at them. Magnolia trees grow fast, some will do in the northern areas.
