I have also seen black on black and green on green(called ork skin) White on white was ballsy and is art but after that then it has been done. I am ok with minimalism but I rarely see it done well. There are so many artist that think minimalism is lack of effort and think garbage is art because it is simple. In reality it is just birthed from a simple mind.
Dennis (I could tell you Van gough's life history, but the white on white guys name excapes me, and I'm not a big fan of impresionism either)

And another thing, What is the expresion, I'm fealing "someone is stupid enough to buy this" "that was easy" " a blank canvas is a bi*ch, you deal with it" " k-mart had a sale on white paint" "I could not afford to buy other colors"
Dennis ( Sure i'm an ars, I do have respect for white on white but it's been done, so lets move forward)

That is a rather artsy storie, personaly minimalism is not my thing but I realy don't comdem any school of art, there is some good stuff and some bad stuff but heck that is life.If you don't like the image then the one hanging beside it may be better, or may make you reconsider the prievious image. If it made or makes someone happy then at least there is someone happy.

i think art was pretty much killed with impressionism. after that art became more about talking about art than creating it. i know, i earned an MFA by bullshitting about the subject.
Who are you Arthur Danto? P.S. if you don't know who that is I'm very suprised you have an MFA. There is no killing art and the era of art is not done its just getting filled with all sorts of crap because it seems that everything and anything can be labeled as "art" these days. Andres Serrano, or Mapplethorp are good examples just a bunch of religion bashing and pornography. Besides I have my feelings of photography being an art form. My point being there are great ones out there but they're too lost in a sea of rubbish to be noticed.
BTW If I ever see Andres Serrano in person I'm gonna kick him in the nuts for his little Piss Christ piece.

Piss Christ is a very angry piece. A friend of mine has done at least as bad with some of his works. He has to get it out of his system, he is gay and the church hates him , so he hates back. I don't blame him and honestly I usualy encorage him.

Photagraphy changed art and spawned inpresionism. I really hope you do not truly believe what you said. Inpresionisim is abought composition and color and doing things that the camera can not (the camera has been on the chase however)

I work at a gallery and there is a lot of crap, personaly I love the crap because my stuff compared to it looks great.
A five year olds painting is likely to be ugly, however very expresive. I have looked into expresing myself with the child expresions ,,,not necesarily as primitave but as simple and pure.

No photography is photography not on the same plain as art. Now the scenery itself? thats a different manner but it's just doesn't strike me as art. There are some very pretty photos out there and Mapplethorp's flowers are nice to look at but his history of sex portfolio which includes , naked old women with horse's or man's penis by her face, masturbating nuns, stuff like that....is just soiling the name of art.

I don't like minimalism. I can understand it, and some may only choose it to accent their decor. But it truly is limited in depth, emotion, and creativity.
I do not agree with some of the comments on Impressionism. As a female, I of course, love Monet, Renoir and others. I find an emotional element not found in the acedemic style, and only done expertly in some of the Baroque.
I think impressionism is about making the picture "pop" in the right places to relate to what most impressed the artist. Not all aspects are focused on, only the subject. Weather that is a color in water, a skyscape or the flurry of colors in a garden.
Almost as if Art were the sky, impressionism is the rainbow.

As a movement, it had it's point - besides saving on time and material and still getting a commission.
Most minimalist works not so good for framing and hanging over the fireplace, but perhaps for greeting cards, printer self tests etc.

I value the Simplicity of my life- so many simple things interacting symbiotically in concert, forming a grand system that is the chaotic mess called my life.~S~

Back in art school, they tried their damnedest to get us all to appreciate the concepts behind mimnimalism. And for a while I felt that I was narrow minded because I thought this stuff was a joke. I really tried hard to appreciate it, but sorry guys, I can't.
You can't ask me to look at the best illustrators in the world, with work that takes days and even months sometimes to complete, and then ask me to "oooh" and "ahhh" over a black line on white canvas. Not going to happen.
I notice too, that these "artists" talk an awful lot about their work. And they make sure that they use the most obscure, abstract language to do it so that no ordinary human being is capable of refuting what they're saying and calling them out . So here's my basic theory:
If it takes you longer to explain your art then it did to make it, then you failed at art. It's called visual art for a reason.Write a book if you can talk so much about it. If you can't get the point across when people look at it, then it's not good art.
'I know art is supposed to be subjective and whatnot, but at the moment I can't seem to stomach adopting that strict viewpoint. I think some people are pulling the wool over our eyes with this abstract/minimalist stuff.
that's my 2 cents anyway.
