In the front an back lawns of our house, we now have spots of weed patches, where the grass has turned weedy. This may be I think nutty weed as I have so far seen online.
What do you do. Do you completely dig up the sod of weed patch and replace with fresh sod? That's all I can think of at the moment.

Non chemical methods to kill weeds:
Douse the weeds with boiling water. This method will kill the weed and the seeds.
Vinegar solution sprayed on the weeds. Repeat as necessary for stubborn weeds. Spray full strength. If stubborn weeds you can use a pickling vinegar which is stronger acidity.
Dish soap mix - One ounce dish soap to ten ounces water
All of these results are best when no rain expected and a hot day.
Good Luck!

You can apply a pre-emergent in the spring and fall to prevent weeds from starting. Check with your county extention agent for recommended dates. You may be far enough north with cool temps to apply now.
For existing weeds, I use Ortho Weed-Be-Gone in my lawn. It will kill weeds but not grass. Or you can spot spray with Roundup, it will kill everything but has few residual effects. The weeds have to be growing, so pick a warm day about noon if you spray in spring or fall. I have had poor results spraying on 50*F days typical of my winters.
If you don't want to use chemicals at all, hand picking before they set seeds is probably best.

I do wish you luck. I miss gardening and having a farm. I was a farm gal all my life until two years ago. Planting new sod will work but I believe they need to spray a herbicide first to kill possible weed seeds in the ground.
Don't forget that some weeds are air borne and will fly into your yard. No amount of new sod will get rid of them. Hope some of the methods help if you need to use them.

Hiring a professional is a good idea, even if you just use them for a year or two to get problems under control.
I have a problem with airborne weed seeds myself from a neighboring property. I do everything I suggested above, but I'm going to have to apply pre-emergent much more often from late summer through late spring, perhaps even year round. Normally, a single application in the fall and another in spring should be enough.
I hate applying chemicals, and am very careful for residual effects since I compost all my grass clippings and use them in my veggie garden. Nor do I want to damage my fruiting plants or landscape.
Good luck.

remembering oil and hydralic fluid(oil) is a by product in a farming operation a by product of good maintenance.. use a one gallon sprayer and take a walk down the fence rows works good for all season, keeps thwe weeds out of the wire but doest kill the bird and rabbit cover for the three to five feet on either side of the wire.. and if you do a controlled burn at the end of the year it really cleans up well...

You can buy vinegar (acidic acid) at a chem supply house. The concentration as high as 98 percent. When you use it, it will kill the plants and at the same time put nutritional values into your soil. I don't use hydrocarbon sprays. Because they are based upon some very toxic formulas such as Agent Orange, which I am a life time member of the Agent Orange Club.
Scalding water is excellent. You see the results fast.

I use vinegar and it works great - also is cheaper than other chemicals and better for the environment and your surrounding plants/grasses

excellent point about the AOC. I too am a member. but i was going to reccomend composting. u put paper and stuff on a plant to block the sun or light, it kills it.

If the weeds are more than the good grass yes-have to pull up to the root and sometimes a control burning is needed. If you decide to take all area out and put fresh healthy grass sod in(inspect and make sure no weeds or odd in your sod also before buying)-then after all is pulled out as much as possible to the root of the matter-then do a controled burning(notify fire department of issue and your right to do so and how you will be handling a safe burn-time and date etc..)-some roots have to burn individually-depend how deep and thick-and or rake up and burn and or a total area burn-of soil toiled.have to use common sense once you have decided the issue and problems-evaluation of situation.

My homemade mixture works well!
1 tbs. of dawn dish soap per 1 gallon of distilled vinager
1 cup of salt per each gallon.
It's cheaper than Round-up and works better!

If you'll read the active ingridents on a bottle of Round Up. It's made up of mostly salt. The more salt you use the longer weeds stay dead. But you have to be careful because to much salt will contaminate the soil and won't allow anything to grow there.
