I don't like guns so I would much rather have a protective dog over a gun. That being said, I don't want a dog that's gonna bark at the mail man every time he comes or will bark at the neighbor kids when they're out playing or come over to play because they don't "belong." Our Weimaraner does just that and I can't stand it. My son brought his friend over to play and the dog went nutso.

I think more people don't have it because too many won't properly train their dogs. The dog ends up attacking a neighbor or a child and gets more punishment than the owner. If you are a responsible owner and you know what you are doing then I'm all for it...but some people shouldn't be allowed near dogs much less aggressive ones they can sick on people.

I have a English Staffy & a German Shepherd. Both seem to act like Big Sooks. But intact both have been trained as Watch/Guard/Protect animal.
They are friendly most of the time.
Unless a certain command is given.
Then They are in Protection mode.
I don't like or use Guns. But I am trained in Several Martial Arts, Bo/Quarter Staff fighting. As well as Sword, Battle Axe, Knife Fighting.
I am an Archer, using a Bow.
I also know how to throw Knives & Axes. Too.
Last time someone tried breaking in here. They lost an ear....
Taken off with a thrown Knife.
Then held to the ground by my dogs until the Cops arrived.

I have never owned or touched a gun, however, I currently own five large dogs. They all look intimidating but 3 of them are special needs dogs. All are rescues.
My old Chow was the best guard dog I've ever owned. A wonderful breed with natural guarding instincts, a definite must for any single woman living alone.

Thank you. Being big dogs they do cost and and a leg to feed but they're well worth it since they came from sad backgrounds. I've found that rescue dogs seem to sense they were saved from bad backgrounds. Samoyeds are almost like Chows (one man dogs, loyal and protective).. My purebred white German Shepherd is huge but he suffers with severe epilepsy.

Good luck to you. You sound like a big hearted animal lover. As I said before on your blog: Kia ora.

Oh you are true about the dogs fits/seizures being horrible to watch. I feel so helpless and can only pet him and wait until he (Mr. Wolf) comes out of each fit. He's always disoriented and feels the urge to bite on something so I always have a snack with his epilepsy meds (4 Phenobarbital 30mg pills) stuffed inside his snack. My vet cannot diagnose why he has fits too. I feel for you having had to watch your first samoyed having seizures. It is truly a heartbreaking experience.

I'm actually in BC right now for a Shutzhund competition with my dog. She is much better for home protection because she will bark to warn off intruders first and is a great companion all the time. I also have a gun but nobody would know that before trying to break in to my home and it's pretty usless just sitting in my drawer

Shutzhund isn't a breed it's a dog sport from Germany that includes Obedience, Tracking and Protection Work. Originaly only German Sheppards, Dobermans & Boxers were allowed to train but now most Shutzhund clubs allow all breeds.

Kristin, my Chow was Shutzhund trained by a branch of the US Federal K9 division where my ex worked. Most of the other dogs there were German Shepherds.

Shakey, your dog (Weimirana -- spell?), is also know as the Ghost Dog for it's beautiful eyes and coat. I love that breed, they are so smart.

I was just at a Shutzhund competiton in BC and most of the dogs were either German or Belgin Shepherds with only 2 other Dobermans, one Boxer and one Bull Mastif. Any dog can handle the Obedience part, most are good with the Tracking but many breeds loose points in the Protection trials because the "bite" and hold are not natural actions for them. It's a ton of fun and a great way to bond with your dog.

Seeing Sholoh actually attack a human{appropriate cause}in truth it kinda scarred the hell out of me.He dropped him on command but HOLY COW!....Makes BOTH my gsds look slow and awkward, and I assure you, neither are.I have to keep a close eye on Liberty, though. And my Dad's dog,Boomer?I can't adopt that dog out...hes OVER woman and child protective. No training. My animals could be better trained and Ive thought of this for a while.
Sholoh is always such a happy go lucky show off.He can be trusted around other species,PREY species, small children,he is shy around canes and foot warry around wheel chairs, though. But boy when its time to do his job,he's instantly down to bussiness.I credit that animal with a great deal of my ability to recover from the past.I cant imagine my life if he'd never come into it,or after he passes. One thing's for certain, because of him,I'll never be without a wolf by my side.Maybe not a full blood, but a high content wolfdog at least.Yes,I do know each is an indivual. One can't be replaced by another.

Having had both, and both is the right answer, I prefer guns over dogs:

Dogs are daily maintenance & annual vet visits
Barking is an issue
Travelling is a problem
IF the dog has to attack, chances are the idiot public will want it put down
Guns, like dogs, can have an intimidation factor, so neither has to be used

Now if you're going to have a dog as a family pet anyway, it makes sense to have one that can back up it's bark. A little yippy dog nipping at a burglar's toes won't do much. You would be better off putting the key to the safe in the aquarium with a couple lion fish.

As mentioned many times, the dog has to be properly TRAINED, plus considered a member of the family (furry kid) and NOT - no frikken way - NOT chained to a tree in the yard.

Both. Well the dog isn't for protection but he is good at alerting me if someone is in the yard. I have a 9mm Sig Sauer, a Smith and Wesson 38 special revolver, a couple shot guns ( 12 and 20 gauge), and a rifle. I also have a 22 caliber semi automatic pistol for target practice.

Even if I could have a dog I would choose gun, of which I have 3 and plan to own more. I have nothing against dogs and have owned them in the past when I was growing up, I have more faith in my firearms. I know exactly where they are and what my firearms will do, whereas the best trained dog in the world could run, hesitate, or disobey. I do not mean any disrespect at all to those who own and love dogs, I only give my thoughts and opinion related to this topic.

This is my feeling as well. My dog growls at any sounds outside, then goes nuts if it turns in to footsteps or voices.

My Sig P229 is in my nightstand, S&W M&P Shield is in my computer desk and M&P 9c is in my coffee table. Those are for any undesirables who make it in the door.

I am well armed and have many canids...even the tiniest will bark, but it's Sholoh,Liberty and Guage I depend upon.None would hesitate to do their job and I love them with all of my heart.I don't much go anywhere without one by myside...part of that ptsd issue, but I must be gaining some ground on that because Im finding that while its difficult ,I CAN and do go some places at some times without them having to be with me.On the home front,a perp wouldn't stand a chance. If 1 member of the pack attacked, all of them would...it's pack mentality.Sholoh,he'd drop em on command,as would Guage...but Liberty?I can't yet trust my answer to that.Willow and Shamuk...In the heat of the moment?No....and my maltipoo? He has no concept that he isn't 10' tall bullet proof...we call Tuffy the ball grabber
