I was a reconnaissance navigator. There's not too much of that on the outside. After I separated, it took me a year to find a job, and no, I wasn't being picky. Eventually I did land a good job with one of the major defense companies. So I guess the answer depends on how patient you need to be. And of course with the current defense budget issues, I could be unemployed again on short notice.

i'd never given a thought to flying before the army. knowing i'd be drafted i took all the tests to see what i qualified for. the recruiter said that i qualified for any enlisted mos or i could enter the warrant officer aviator course. i went home and gave it alot of thought and dad finally convinced me to work on something that wasn't used in vietnam so in signed up to be a nike hercules electrical maintenance technitian, 24q i think it was. it was a big missle that i'd built a model of when i was a kid that was based around the major cities in the u.s. that would shoot down russian bombers with a nuclear warhead that could take out whole formations with one shot. cool shit, i thought, and they didn't have them in vietnam.
i was in basic training one day shooting pool in the dayroom one sunday with other delinquents who like me got too many gigs that week and got restricted to the barracks when the first sergeant came in and hung up a huge poster. it showed a huey medivac helicopter that was being boarded by a bunch of pretty nurses with the help of the crew chief and medic. a kid about my age was looking back out the pilot's window. he wore these cool sunglasses, flying gloves and a neat looking flight helmet and looked like he was saying something like, 'man, look at the a** on that redhead,' into his nifty looking boom mic. the caption said, 'if you have a high school diploma this could be you in less than a year.' that did it. army advertising at it's best. i said, 'hey top, where do i sign?'
the army being the army i had to go to nike hercules school at fort bliss for six months where they spent a ton of money and time for me to learn to do something i'd never actually do. from there i was assigned to a missle battery near n.y. where i barely unpacked before i had to report ft wolters, texas for primary flight training. so much for dodging the war.

When I came home I had a few months to go, so it gave me time to look around at what was available.I was assigned to Nichols Hospital (actually Ireland Army Hospital at Ft. Knox) and my job was to pick up recruits at the Recruiting Station at 18th & Broadway in Louisville and herd them through processing and physicals at Nichols. It was easy and I was done early most days.
Back then Louisville was booming and I had already decided I didnt want to work at a hospital .I had seen enough blood and suffering in Vietnam. So I wanted to do something different.
I ended up getting to know some guys (they were all vets) at a bar on Dixie Hwy ( US-31W) same road that goes right through Ft. Knox. They were "coopers" -whiskey barrel makers.Louisville Cooperage was the largest manufacturer of whiskey barrels in the world, union, and paid well with good benefits. They got me in and from there I got into a distillery.I ended up making whiskey for over 20 years and then became a game warden. So I dont think my MOS helped at all, but other vets did.I have two pensions today and I got both because fellow vets helped me get in the door and hired! I think we owe that to each other.

Did my MOS help when I returned to civilian life? Yes, somewhat.
Before enlisting, I worked for a few months as a disc jockey at a local radio station. I enlisted in the Army, exchanging three years of active duty for training as an information specialist (MOS 71Q, primarily a writer for the post newspaper), went to a very good DoD course, and learned how to cover what passes for news on an Army post. Because of my previous experience, later I was awarded MOS 71R (broadcast specialist) on promotion to E-5 ... just days before my ETS at Ft. Lewis.
Fifteen days later I enlisted in the Air Force, where I worked as both an information specialist (AFSC 791x0, same as the Army MOS except conducting a lot more tours for civilians) and a broadcast specialist (AFSC 791x1). Seven years' total military experience allowed me to hone my broadcast skills (although I had received no broadcast training from either Army or Air Force), and on those occasions when I worked in a radio news room I was better prepared than I would have been otherwise. I also left military service knowing how to appreciate good coffee, tolerate bad coffee, use really bad coffee instead of Go-Jo to clean typewriter/teletype ink off my fingers after changing the ribbon, and how to write effective re-enlistment announ ... uh, I mean commercials.
Had I not enlisted, I would have learned all those skills, and more, much sooner by working every day at a radio station. But I would not have had the many experiences that made my time in two uniforms worthwhile.

Navy had "ratings" vice the ground pounders MOS thing.
Cold War era and the Rooskies were the BIG threat. We tried to track all their missile subs and be ready to sink the dern' things if the nukes started flying.
Returning to the states I looked everywhere and couldn't find a soul needing somebody who could detect and prosecute a submarine.
But I was able to find the errors in the Hunt for the Red October movie.
Next time you watch the movie Midway look for the scene with the camera in the diving Japanese bomber headed for the aircraft carrier. You will see the target... an angled-deck carrier... that were not built until the 1950s.
Midway was during WW 2.
See... my service did come in handy.

...My MOS collection and my education helped me. I've been in Afghanistan and Iraq for the last 10 years, supporting US troops stationed here, as a civilian contractor. My only complaint is that I've lost alot of time at home, but I wouldn't trade the satisfaction I get from taking care of troops...

My MOS was 88M, truck driver. If I wanted to be a civilian trucker I probably could but never tried. Got my degree while in and work for a defense contractor now. Military combat experience and degree got me the job so while my MOS specifically didn't really help, I won't be where I am now without the military.

You have the GI Bill to help you when you get out. Go to school and get a degree for whatever you want to do.
If you can get out and afford to go to school on the GI Bill Bravo. But if that includes supporting the families that most service members have on what the GI Bill affords in economy housing I want to know how you do it? I am a very good budget minded person but you must be a miracle financial wizard.
Especially when the medical expenses for dependent's alone are enough to sink most families budgets. And that many military families were hammered in the housing debacle that has meant zero home equity to fall back on.
True the military does not "issue" families but if the military is going to "allow" personnel to have families and often " expect" them to support the service member AND "the mission" as many spouses do with their sacrifices their should be a continuation of the dependent housing allowance in addition to the GI Bill pay so that they do not have to chose between books and beans.
What makes me furious is that we will afford drug addicts and criminals all sorts of benefits (subsidized housing) but dependent military children have to worry about post service survival if their parents try to take advantage of the benefits they earned so they can be viable for employment after service.
Hopefully those who have rental property will afford some kind of break to a GI Bill student tenant. My experience is they are excellent tenants, neighbors, and the kids are an asset in local schools.
I agree Vet's helping Vets is critical.

I went to school on the GI Bill with a wife and two sons. How'd I do it? My wife babysat for a neighbor. The GI Bill paid the tuition and books and other miscellaneous school expenses. Working as a plant manager in manufacturing after receiving my undergraduate degree supported me and my family and loans and savings helped cover any gap. I earned a Bachelor Degree, a Masters Degree and a Law Degree.
After my first post graduate degree, I worked as a general manager in manufacturing. That helped cover law school expenses in a private law school, which today would cost in excess of a hundred thousand dollars. I worked my a** off sixteen hours a day cause I wanted it. I was $21,800 in debt when all was said and done.
As far as online education, I think its BS. You might as well say to me that you read a lot. You want credit for going to college and earning a degree, then go to college and earn a real degree. I and many, many of my colleagues throw those online resumes in the trash can. Just another huge American Scam IMHO!

Pandi I agree with you.I didn't know what I wanted to do and really didn't fit in to college (and I tried a couple).I was older than my classmates and it was at a time when Vietnam was being debated on campus and I just didn't want to`listen to people talking crap who had never been there and just were doing the "hip" thing to do including profs. I withdrew.Fortunately jobs were plentiful, so I started out as a cooper making whiskey barrels and eventually got a job inside the distillery. It was good pay and benefits- hard to come by these days. After 21 years I got hooked up with the State as a Game Warden, a job I loved. But I have no regrets. I was able to save and invest money.I was lucky because my parents left me some.I wouldn't take anything for the time and privilege I had to serve in the Army.Without it I might have just been another guy whining and just getting by.The lessons were hard, but I'm glad I passed those tests and survived.

Doesn't matter what you do in life Whiskey as long as you do what you like and do it well. I never got wealthy; but, I made a good living and I got to work for myself. Being able to do it "my way" was everything to me. That's probably pretty obvious by now?

When I got out the last thing I wanted to do was anything involving hospitals and the medical field.I didn't want to see any more suffering and pain. I took several tests for different law enforcement agencies and passed and then told myself "nah"....not for me.Too much like the military.I tried college and didn't like it. I thought it was a joke.
The best thing that happened to me was meeting some guys working at Jim Beam distillery in Bardstown Ky.I could work pretty much unsupervised and as long as I did my job get paid well and be left alone. I have to tell the truth.Sometimes I would buy some whiskey, sleep in my truck and go to work in the morning in the same clothes. But I eventually got my stuff together and made a life.I owe a lot of credit to my mom and dad. Daddy was a medic, mom worked at Valley Forge and thats where they met after dad was severely wounded at the Bulge. He understood me when I didn't know myself. I'm not sure the same kind of opportunities are out there for these vets and that's a damn shame.

the law does fascinate me, pandi. i've made the supreme court and the constitution a real hobby for about a quarter century or so. still, i'm a rank amateur at best. but i'd hate the games that i suppose have to be played to make the law work for your side and i've had glance into the politics in at least one particular law firm i had the misfortune to represent me and a few other fellow litigants. so yeah, i'll just keep the law as a hobby. i mean hell, if i'm going to turn a hobby into a job i'll practice hard to learn to pick up the spin on those down and away major league sliders and go play third base for the yankees.

Yo cowboy, I thought you said you were in the Air Force. So you did have a DI and not a TI when you were in basic. A soldier, not an airman. My bad.

Basic for me was a joke jrbogie.. I had played sports in high school and was in great shape. Because of my dad I knew what to expect. It just wasn't hard.I don't recall any time when I was catching more hell than anybody else or picked on, it was just part of "training". Truth is I liked it.
The discipline they instilled on us helped me a lot later on.But I saw some poor guys who didn't belong in the Army and they just "waved them through" if you know what I mean. They weren't cut out for it at all.I felt especially sorry for the married guys who got drafted, especially those with infants and small kids. It was cruel for those families and their kids to rip them apart!
One guy I'll never forget was from New York.He came in with really long hair and a earring and looked like f*king Sonny Bono before we got shaved etc.He was maybe 23. He claimed he was a "over the road trucker" before being drafted. He talked a lot of crap and played the bad a** role.By the time we graduated he had his a** beat by half the platoon. He was just a loud mouth punk. It was a great experience and I learned a lot....

Ha ha. I was an aviation storekeeper (supply dept.), and didn't do anything close to that after getting out. I do work for the V.A. though.

11C- not one iota!
The cadre on the range said the aiming circle and sight were akin to surveying equipment. I think they were full of shit on that.

Not one bit. I never worked my MOS. I ended up fixing radios for a while then company armorer and site impress fund (small px) operator.
In the late 70s they were happy to get anybody who could read let alone a GT score in the high 120s.
I did learn how to be an ,=9 and that women have no business being company comander. Oh how PC.
