Thought folks might like to share community events that occur in your area. I'll start with Asheville, NC, where I lived as a child and still visit often. In the summer each weekend there is Shindig On The Green in downtown Asheville. Lots of mountain music, storytelling, clogging and dancing. Bring a blanket or lawn chair along about sundown and enjoy and participate in the show for free! This video from 2012 showcases some of the veteran dancers from various clogging teams that have danced in the show! Enjoy!

Altje-- we do have a lot of festivals starting soon--very historic town---If your Grand-mother lived in Roan Mountain--bet it was beautiful then--some of the fir trees are dying up on Mountain...probably from that dang beetle---but the flowers are beautiful up there during late June. "good to see you---hope that ice storm don't get you today....

This is a historic area of the French And Indian War.Fort ligonier is 10 miles from here they have a week long celebration with a reenactment of the battle. There is fort Pitt and Fort Duquesne in pittsburgh and Fort Necessity in Uniontown.George Washington fought with the british at the battle.General Braddock, the english commander died in the battle and is buried a short distance from the fort.Gettysburg is about 90 minutes from here,i have been there 3 times, there is just too much to see.I climbed the tower on Little Big Top.They say when some of the roads around here were built they followed old indian trails, them indians must have drank too much firewater before they made their trails, they are all curves.

Same drunk Indians laid out half of Missouri's roads ,then drunken white men built them all on curves.

We have a lot of different things to do here. an hour in one direction is gold country with all the old towns to visit and sit under a shade tree and have a picnic lunch and people watch., there is old railroad museums, old town Sacramento. several vinards to do wine tasting and watch stage shows. So many things to tell and do. I rather see an old ghost town. Walk a creek bank, walk across a covered bridge, or go to the park and watch kids play. Tomorrow I take my dog to be bath and I will go yard saleing while he is getting pretty. Have a great week end. Enjoy. gj

Wilbur, some of my ancestors came to NC from PA down the Great Wagon Road, which was first a trail made by buffalo which the Indians used as a trading path with other Indians to the south! Have an interesting book about the road and the early settlers which I am re-reading.
Most of Western NC was settled by immigrants from PA (German and Scotch-Irish) rather than from Eastern NC going to the West.

Used to ride my horse into the Black Mountains or The Cerbat Mountains or The Hualapai Mountains, [WAL-LAH-PIE] which means "PEOPLE OF THE TALL PINES". Now I take my ATV or my UTV and drive along those old trails. Every once in awhile I find some evidence of the mining activity in this area. The town of Chloride provides gun fights on the weekends as well as preserving the buildings that are now more than a hundred years old.

The old trails were what the wild life, deer, elk and such used to go from here to there. Indians followed and used these same trails when walking from place to place. The animals did not walk in a straight line but followed the contours that provided the easy path to where they wanted to go.

One of the surprising things that my husband (who is Ukrainian) discovered while walking around in Greensboro while I was at band rehearsal was that O Henry, the author, was from Greensboro! Slava had read his books when he was a schoolboy in Ukraine! It truly is a small world.

This is long, but if you have the time the music is very soothing and the tour of the restored town of Salem, now part of Winston-Salem,NC and known as Old Salem is well worth seeing. This is a living community with some houses open for tours and others private residences. The Salem Band plays summer concerts on Salem Square in front of Salem College, the oldest college for women in the country. There are several web site about Old Salem. Nice place to vist - Salem Tavern serves great food and George Washington spoke highly of it after his visit there. Yes, that George Washington, our first president!

Hi Fanny, Glad you liked it. The county I live in (Forsyth)is where the early Moravians settled after coming to America, arriving first in Pennsylvania and then coming to NC. Moravian College is in Bethlehem, PA. I have visited Bethlehem with the Moramus Chorale when we sang in a joint concert with the Unitas Chorale (the Northern counterpart of our Southern group). As I remember it was in April and it was snowing! Do you live near Bethlehem? Was just wondering about your weather? We have frost this morning!
