In November 2012 my family adopted a beagle. She was at least a year old even though the lady who adopted her from didn't know her actual age. The first couple of weeks were a nightmare. The lady suggested we get a dog crate to put our beagle in when we are away from home. It has worked really well. She has been eating her bed occasionally when we are gone and sometimes when I'm home with her.
How can I help her with separation anxiety?

Have you tried putting music on? I had a beagle and she howled whenever I was out. I made the mistake of not keeping her crate trained. Now, I have a Jack Russell Terrier. She is so well crate trained that all I have to do is say, "Mommy has to go out" and she walks in the cage. I put the TV on to a music channel (Contemporary Christian for me) and she's fine until I get home). Give it a try. Also, on Yahoo, there is a support page, for people whose pets deal with separation anxiety. I hope it works out well for you.

We came home last night to find Raisin had taken her frustrations out on my sewing basket things were stolen off the coffee table and she'd pooped in my slipper.

Seriously, I found early on that Frieda felt lost unless she was in her crate, if I was out. They come to feel it as a safe place. Put something in it with your smell on it and put a blanket in it.

I've tried no cage house training...going back to crate training.
I took pictures and video but didn't get any of the cute guilty looks from her...she was completely oblivious to the fact she'd done anything wrong.She was just ecstatic we were home...she isn't used to the mommy going anywhere.

Im a licensed trainer.. Don't crate!!!..
Its hard to end anxiety, but it can be done. First off look at the breed, beagles by nature are in need of energy release. Walk your dog often and make time to let her run somewhere.
Next, you can buy all natural supplements to calm your dog through the transition period. They won't drug her up but just calm her.. Then comes the hard part, but its effective. Dogs learn by familiarity, repetition and scent. Start gradually by gathering all your items as if you are leaving your home, everyone in the household must do this, but dont leave. Do this a couple times a day for a few days. Then gather your items and actually leave the house, stay out for a few minutes and return, giving the dog extra praise and a treat. Gradually over days extend the time you stay out, continue the praise. See where I'm going here??
Desensitizing your dog to you leaving will reduce the stress. Its not going to happen over night. She will in time see you leaving as not a bad thing.
Crating, chaining ect ect is negative methods. If people aren't going to take the time to train them properly and productively don't get a dog. People choose to take on the responsibility and expect the pet to conform to their lives.. Its about making the pet a member of the family so ALL members must conform together..

I can agree to a point.. One difference is you stated you have pups.. The dog in question while young is not really a pup.. She had had life experience pryor to her adoption now.. Pups are more trainable due to lack of much prior mindset..
Breed, age and history pays huge role.. Yes not all are the same, that is very much true.. Im speaking in terms of working with various breeds, ages and dynamics..

I have a clingy cat. I don't know if it had to do with her having gingivitis stomatitis as a kitten. Had all her back teeth removed and the disease stopped. But I had to dote on her to get her to eat again. She also ingested scoopable litter and had to have her stomach opened up to remove it. I feed her with a syringe for a week. She doesn't like other cats and doesn't seem to be interested in the birds outside. Loves bird video though
When I return home, she screams with one of those long, drawn out, sad cries that seems to last forever, before I reach the door. Never did this before until my knee injury and I stayed home a lot. I feel so guilty! Bailey is so happy and playful when I am home. She's there for me when I need her.
