Most providers will not allow you to "tether" your phone to your computer.
"T Mobile" is an exception but don't expect connect speeds to be any greater than Dial Up.
If it available in your area, I recommend using "Cricket Wireless Broadband."

Not true. Verizon Wireless allows it now, too, under their "Everything" plans, without additional charge unless you go over your data plan limit. I use mine all the time, and with my 4G connection, it's not too bad speed wise. Not as good as a wired connection, but very comparable to my home wireless.

To answer your question, it depends on your phone model and service carrier.

Then I found out just need to have portable wi fi turned on.no plug in needed-go to tethering press more and then your pass word set up-then on lap top computer is a choose of connection and then put your pass word in to connect to-then should be auto done everytime you have hot spot from phone turned on-and above that is the one to touch to turn it on-check mark will show, when on-mode-is separate from regular wi fi of the phone.

I did tech support for Sprint for a while and they came down hard on people who connected their phones to their computers for internet. Sad thing is, Sprint stores and vendors were selling the hardware and instructing people on how to do it.
They will catch you, and they will charge you out the wazoo.

Yes. It depends on your phone. All I have to do is go to >settings>(under data usage click more)>tethering and portable hotspot>then check portable Wi-Fi hotspot and then click set up WiFi hotspot. It should tell you what to do then. I am basing this on android higher than 4.x.x and it is not illegal as someone said. Have fun.

check out foxfi
http://foxfi.com/
The cell providers know about foxfi and try to prevent this. Having your browser give a fake id usually gets around this.
You can win and win you will!
