Finished Starship Grifters. A fine and fun science fiction romp especially for its current Kindle price of $2. Some of the names are groan inducing, as are some of the Star Wars references but on the whole a very enjoyable light read.

Started The Pale Horseman by Bernard Cornwell. It is the sequel to and picks up directly after the same author's The Last Kingdom.

Finished The Pale Horseman by Bernard Cornwell. I liked this second book in the Saxon Tales series better than the first (The Last Kingdom). Maybe it was getting to know the main character, Uhtred, more, or maybe the pacing was a bit better, but it was a more riveting read, especially at the end.

Started The Day of the Triffids by John Wyndham.

Put Triffids on hold after discovering the American edition is abridged and censored. Ordered what I am hoping is the original English version and will resume when that arrives. In the meantime, I've decided to revisit The Once and Future King by T. H. White and am loving it so far.

Warriors is really good. I'm sure most people got it just to read Martin's story (as it's Game of Thrones related), but I've been liking what I've been reading so far (about 5 or 6 stories in).

Yeah the story in Warriors is actually the third in the Dunk and Egg series. Legends does indeed have the first story and Legends II has the second, so I will be picking those up eventually. I've heard of Feist, but not Gemell but I can certainly look them up. Thanks for the suggestions.

In looking closer at the Legends series, it looks like they are all stories related to fictional worlds the authors have already created/novelized. Seems to get the full impact of each story, I'd have to read the relevant books for background. I'll keep them in mind though.

It's very tangentially related, because one of the characters in the A Song Of Ice And Fire books mentions knowing them (the protagonists in the short story), albeit pretty obliquely.

No worries. I only just found out where Martin put his story about the Dance of Dragons - in his (along with Gardner Dozois) anthology Dangerous Women.

Finished The Day of the Triffids by John Wyndham - A classic sci-fi novel that is just at home in modern times as it was when it was published (early 1950's). The story is told from the point of view of William Masen, a biologist and "triffidologist" who finds himself one of the few sighted people in a London gone blind in the wake of a comet shower. To me, his tone seemed rather formal and a little aloof from the catastrophes occurring around him, but that should not be taken as uncaring or withdrawn. There are a few sections (very few, actually) where philosophy takes the helm but only one of these seems that the author is inserting his own voice. One other thing - I figured the triffids themselves would be featured a lot more in the book (especially since they are the title character), but the story is much more about humans and their interactions and relationships in the face of disaster. A fine read indeed - in fact I felt it could have been a little longer.

The Secret Scripture by Sebastian Barry - Quite an amazing book - part history, part psychology, and part literature (through the use of different viewpoints) and all of it exceedingly well written. I had to do some research into Irish history to understand the goings on better, but I count that as a great by product of the reading. I owe this wonderful selection to the brick and mortar book club to which I belong. I very much enjoyed as much as one can despite its being unrelentingly grim in parts and primitive and savage in others.

My roomie watches the series and got me to watch a few episodes with her. I really enjoyed it so figured the books have to be better.

I did read the author is frantically writing the next 2 so to keep up with the show. I just hope it doesn't lose anything being written in haste.

I read them a couple of times before it was ever a show.
What I'm trying to say is him being in haste might ruin the books...but not the show.....They make up their own things in the show..... that never happened in the books. Great Books.....Good Show.

I was talking about the books as well in my comment. Its happened a few times the books end up lacking.

My all time favorite series of books is Elric Saga. No movie or TV series could ever compare.
