1995 f-150 with 4.9 inline 6 and 5 speed manual tranny. (218k miles)
I have a chance to buy a wrecked (65k miles )97 f150 with the 5liter (302)v-8 with an automatic transmission.
Should I keep the 5speed manual and have it rebuilt or should I go through the hassle of changing the rear end gearing?
I would rather keep the 5speed but not sure it would hold up to the extra hp.
Is the clutch & bellhousing going to match up on the 302?
Give me some opinions please

The real hassle will be to rewire the engine management systems to operate the automatic transmission.

I will have the entire donor truck for parts ( it was hit in the right rear section so most from the cab forward looks useable )
Do you think the 5speed would hold up to 300hp -350hp?

Not a chance. A transmission meant for a inline 6 wont hold that kind of power. Its probably a t5 which would be at the limit of its ability to hold 300. The t45 could do 400 450. A t56 does better and can hold over 700.

the m5 used on the 4.9s was also used on the 302 in the full sized Broncos, just have to crossreference the actual model as there was a light duty and a medium duty version
iif it's the md t'll be drivable up to the point where you're beating on it heavy
I underrated the transmission on a ranger swap, it pretzeled the driveshaft well before doing damage to the transmission so I just kept a spare in the bed. was just a cheap toy I put together from parts that were taking up space in the shop so I never went the tom woods / T route
it'll last you long enough to get the build bugs out, can replace it should you actually break it or swap in an upgrade later. keep your foot off the floor in first gear and it may just last you awhile, had almost 40k on mine before a tree fell on it while I was overseas

It can be done but I feel the cost really isn't worth it...better to save your money and get a 5.4 ...remember its not a classic car that might be worth the time and parts that will kinda hold its value..kinda I'd just sell it and buy a maintained 150/250

Haha..the 302 has the same torque as the inline 6cyl....and why would you want to go to an auto? Manual transmissions are much more reliable...just put in a new clutch kit, and drain the trans and put in royal purple, it won't wear any more.

The M52R2 is actually a much more robust trans than the T-5 and is what is in the F series with the inline 6. It will handle the power just fine.

New engine, rebuilt transmission, in a 20 year old vehicle with over 200K on the clock? Not my style. I get rid of my rides after 10 years and 200K on them.
The last time I replaced an engine in my vehicle, an old man rear ended me 2 months later @ 45 MPH. Guess what? The insurance companies only want to pay out what the vehicle's book value is. NOT what was done under the hood.
Lessons learned the hard way. Hope you don't find this out like I did.

Depends on what insurance policy you have on it.
My 78 chevy, through progressive, Allstate and safeco insurance policies, I was able to tell them the value of it and that's what it was insured for. Sure I pay more, but it will pay me that amount should something happen to it.
