A 1972 Maverick I bought for $50.00. Short in the left side turn signals, broken accelerator pump tube in the carburetor, synchronizers worn out in the transmission, and it burnt 2 quarts of oil a week.

Then due to the rust and rot, the body flexed so bad going over railroad tracks, the exhaust system broke in 1/2 behind the drivers seat. And people complained about the Pinto.

mom bought a Phoenix new, it never made it to 10k, in two years it spent 14 months in a service center, they ended up giving her the escort stationwagon that they had given her on loan after the first year for the balance of the Phoenix loan, manufacturer and dealer
picked up the rest

Mini Cooper 1st yr ..out...not talking about the 60's style but modern..transmissions are junk...tons of labor..parts expensive... fun to drive but not worth the cost to keep them running

My 1988 Eagle premier...a partnership between Chrysler and Renault made this possible...front wheel drive four door v6....looks were very forgettable....but power was decent....bads were the electrics which were awful...and the transmission which failed about every 40 thousand miles...was my first car and I only paid 500 for it....sold it 6 years later for 300 when 4 gear went on the trans....and the water pump began leaking....all and all wasn't a total disaster...the money I made went into my beloved Plymouth fury

Aztec- cost more than it was worth.. Had it repoed.

Chevy cavalier - water pump, thermostat, relay, blew a head, heater core. Now the gas pump. $2000 in repairs and still broke down..

Chey Malibu - no heat in the car but thermostat gauge close to redline this morning.. Idk thermostat, head,or heater core.

Learning more about engines than I wanted to know.. Help..

If the Malibu is a V6, look for an intake gasket, water pump, or sometimes head gasket leaks. Fix the issue and flush all the Dex Cool (orange antifreeze) out.

Go get your thermostat replaced sounds to like its stuck not opening up which is why you have no heat and why the car is overheating

the only car that was considered a lemon was an early 90's Plymouth Sundance.
only because it had a couple of weird noises that they refused to check out,5 months into the new car warranty.
I didn't consider it a lemon, but I think the law states it being so...by the number of times its brought it,within a certain time frame.
im not sure what the problem was, being it was around 25 yrs ago,but...being honest,it ended up being a great little car with some balls to it too.
Plymouth was always a notch above Dodge to me,and it was a nicely designed car, comfy, and it wasn't exactly a slug on the street either.
I really liked that car.

Like that classic Chrysler engine knock? My old man must have taken his van back 5 times for it only to hear "that's just how they sound". No, Mister Technician. Engines aren't supposed to sound like they were built without bearings. Still, you can't kill the damm things.

it was along those lines,yeah.
it was the typical pinging sound, when the engine is warm, and you shut the car off.
but this one made it,right when you started it

Yeah a 72 maverick
One of the guys I worked with and I were walking to the parking lot after work and I noticed a puddle of oil under his car. He said he had used 2 quarts of oil to drive 60 miles and said he would sell it for $100.
I told him to pop the hood and noticed the sending unit was leaking and loose, I got a wrench and tightened the sending unit and stopped the leak.
He still wanted to sell it so I gave him cash on the spot and a ride home.
I drove it two years but I had to change the shifter to a homemade floor shift and the ignition switch to a push button starter and a early dashboard key switch.
When I took it in for new tires they had to use a 6ft cheater bar to break the lug nuts.
It finally died when a ditzy woman friend drove 125 miles in 2nd gear @ 75mph.
I got my $100 worth out of that lemon.

It was a Toyota Tercel idk the year but it had the square back. It died out on the 10 after I left the lot. It was an indoor lot, not a visible business off of Euclid in Ontario. He guy offered to fix the problem and it ran for years. It was sold AS IS. I guess it had been sitting too long. But it wasn't dusty like the Jeep that looked like it was sitting in mud for years.

Brand new 1990 Chevy Z71 sport side tranny went out with 18000 highway miles. So the line like a rock is true it just sat there. Truck also had to be taken in for a window rattle and the brake lights wouldn't shut off. That should have been a recall Chevy never again.

Nope never bought a lemon for a car. Always check cars out before purchasing anything. No matter what owner tells you the car can always speak for itself.
Tell Tale Signs:
Tire wear (level or one sided)
Oil dipstick (black or clean)
Oil (smell burnt, low, just plain dirty)
Radiator (clean or brownish sludge built up)
Trans Fluid (smell burnt, low, just plain dirty)
Brakes (spongey feeling, low petal, fluid black)

Then there is always the test drive. Most people just take the car for a quick test drive. Not me i will put $10 in car and drive the piss out of it. If it makes it thru the test drive then negotiations start.

Pontiac 1000, transmission grinding inside, and had to go to 3rd and 2nd gear even on some hills on the main highway, and I traded a lot better car for it, then traded a 70 chevelle, solid body, ran great, just needed a fender, for a gremlin, yep sure did, and on about the second day,the gremlin jammed in 5th gear, and had to beat the gear shift into 3rd gear to pull out to drive home, also about 3 slant 6 dodge darts.
oil pump commonly became weak
In these 74 darts and the oil light would never give warnings, then you finally realize the oil pump problem when the #6 rod starts knocking.
Also had a 65 falcon lemon, but only because the old guy had it restored inside and out, then parked it in a field for maybe 15 yrs, so it needed a fuel tank when I bought it, wheel cylinders, and several other things, just from years of not being driven.
had to be pushed with a bull dozer to un stick the old drum brakes.
