Did over an hour workout at the local "Senior Center" not at all what I expected, there were almost no seniors and it was a ball buster...I never break a sweat except for the Stair Stepper at the gym or Hot Yoga and I dripped after this one!! Finished the day off with an hour at PF lightly on the machines and the Stretch Trainer. Putting on a couple of different hats today, my exercise is putting in a new hot water heater that blew last night....Plumber-Electrician for a day.

45 minutes on the stairs today. Alternated between sprinting every other step to the top with walking every other step to the top. Went non stop with no breaks for the entire time.

I do two different workouts and alternate them. Yesterday's effort consisted of.

Leg extensions 5 x 15 reps at 15kg.

Leg curl 3 x 25 reps at 25kg

Abductor machine 1 x 15 reps at 105, 115, 125kg. (3 sets in all)

Adductor machine - same as above.

Torso twist machine 3 x 15 at 75kg (90 movements in all)

Back extensions 4 x 15

Leg raise 3 x 10

Side bends 3 x 15 at 12kg

Crunch machine 3 x 10 reps at 55kg and 65kg (six sets in all)

I'm not using much weight on the leg extensions cause I have a problem with patellofemoral pain and the aim is to strengthen the inner quadriceps muscle and perhaps cure it. Too much weight causes more pain, hence, caution is indicated.

Three hour everything night at PF; stretch, upper-lower body, treadmill, and finished it with a few turns in the massage chair. Still a little weak in my right arm from the bicycle wreck so it is taking longer working each arm separately when possible.

I was in Planet Fitness for three hours.....45 minutes at least was stretching Yoga and the massage chair....and it takes longer doing different weights on each arm because of my bicycle accident Jan 2nd. I almost always do at least two hours a night when not in the woods or water or like today working on my rental homes.

That exercise was last night but just posted it today.

Absolutely brutal workout @ the playground yesterday.

- Dips on the parallel bars, full dead hang pull-ups, and scaling up the vertical climbing pole then shimmying down the other side hand over hand. Did three sets of each followed immediately by 100 jump rope jumps after each one (900 jumps total).

- Then on the grass field I did walking lunges (12 per leg each set), 40 yard bear crawls, 100 yard sprints, and burpees w- push-ups included.

It's amazing how good of a workout you can get on free jungle gym equipment and an open field if you train hard enough.

Today was push ups, squats, three and half minutes with the ropes (I'm slowly working up to 5), bounced a 6 lb medicine on a trampoline for another 3 minutes. Then I moved to chest press, overhead press, and triceps push down before thirty minutes on the treadmill. I would have done more, but the gym was busy and most machines were full.

I can not work fast so I work long 2.5 hours on the weight machines then 500 crunches, stretch and the massage.....a little over 3.5 hour total workout..it is slow because I have to work each arm with different weights until it heals.

Attended gymeroony and did my standard upper body routine, including biceps curl, triceps press, lat pulldown, row, crunch machine, shoulder press, pec fly and chest press - all using fixed position machines and none of that exalted free weights stuff that the guys with the advanced physiques and the "De Niro in Cape Fear" tattoos enjoy. It was cold outside but not freezing, which considerably enhanced the short journey from car to exercise facility.

I use free weights. They promote stability and balance and core strength moreso than machines. What's so wrong with them?

I am working up to the free weights. I'm still only using them at home and working on form.
Today was leg day. Inner and outer hip abduction, leg press, calf extension, leg pull down, leg push up, and kick backs. That was followed by a walk in the beautiful afternoon to pick my kids up from school. I'm about to do some squats with my dumbbells now.

They're good. I'm stuck in a set routine right now doing certain exercises and hoping to get back to some walking and/or running as the year progresses. Jus' noting how I've noticed the more advanced gym members preferring free weights.

You don't do those exercises in that order, do you?

The problem with weight training exclusively with machines is that because machines balance the weights for you, they don't strengthen the joint stabilizer muscles as much. Over time, as your muscles become stronger and your joint stabilizer muscles don't, it increases the risk of a sudden joint injury while moving something that is free(and requires balancing) because your joint stabilizers are weak. For example, while placing a heavy box on an overhead shelf, your shoulder joints are at an increased risk training with overhead press machines than doing the overhead press exercise with free weights. Many similar examples apply.

Dixie:

I think as we get older we feel safer with the machines verses the free weights, kind of like holding onto the arms of the treadmill and stair stepper which Jose OP has told me is not good....I actually dropped the incline and speed tonight and tried without for a while with success. I certainly had nothing against the free weights and have some in my Georgia hunt camp that I did not use this winter I had full intentions to use them but again did not feel safe as I was alone 85% of my two months up there. Please consider that with some of us older participants....you will understand more in 40 years, we are certainly better than most because we do work out but not perfect.

BTW I still climb the towers and freehand and "climber" climb the trees just a little slower and safer than I used to, I know a slip could end it forever now, even tie a hammock up in the tree limbs and nap in the canopy.

I can understand that, but to refer to them in an almost insulting manner?

I was curious why he regarded them as such. I've run into people before that believed they were only used to 'show off' and didn't understand the true benefits of their use, which is why I posed the question

Not in the least. I acknowledged that the guys with the "Cape Fear" tattoos also are the members with the advanced physiques, meaning they generally know what they're doing. I may graduate to using some free weights in future.

I was being mildly sarcastic about tattoos cause I'm not terribly keen on the fashion for them - especially among the female fraternity. Many would disagree though. There was an article I read on BBC News in the past week about the most messaged woman on the dating site OK Cupid. And she's a veritable walking sketch pad, in girl form.

Not sure in a workout sense, but if you ever go primitive camping, it may keep you from falling back into it

A better question is why you are doing an exercise without knowing the intent or the benefit. Makes it hard to know how to do it properly, not knowing what you're trying to accomplish. Just because a magazine or someone at a gym says its a good idea to do something, doesn't make it so.

Generally speaking, 'pause squats' are good for you if done right. They challenge your body and muscles in another way than they're used to. It requires more core strength to hold the squat as well so it helps your core. Thing about how many things require that kind of movement? Getting out of you car. Getting up out of a chair. Getting off the commode. Getting out of bed. Not that you're NOT capable of these movements. But it's just an example of the concept of the movement.

Yes, I read about the move. And I know I'm doing it correctly period. I didn't ask you. But thank you for your input. The move keeps the muscle/muscles under tension longer than normal.

They do keep the muscles under tension longer, but longer bottom tension isn't necessarily better than doing standard controlled squat reps and trying to do more reps than you did last time, which is why we may not see many people doing pause-squats or pause-reps. You may hear more about them in powerlifting. Are you into powerlifting?
