Op, in my generation, we were more brought up on the notion of waiting for sex, maybe till married and all that. But even the ones who seemed to stick to that marriage notion, did about everything else, but intercourse, and many past a certain young age, didn't stick to that notion as far as waiting till marriage or deep into the relation. Moving forward, this generation wasn't brought up on those notions so much, T.V. examples don't depict it like in my day, the songs don't, its the first generation brought up on common porn...etc. If you had said, wait until there are feelings, your committed....well, all there would have to be to keep her till then, is she having's feelings or strong interest. But to wait till marriage or way off in the future, is asking a lot of the common person these days. And I have to ask myself, what is a person like this doing on DH? Dude, here and in life...it sounds like your barking up the wrong tree's... .you need to look in places where this would more likely be....like a church or where the types like this congregate and do things and a dating site more condusive to people with a similar mind frame.

A generic way to ask this question, might be something like "How do I get someone to forget about what they want, until I get what I want?" When you ask it that way, it's much more honest of you, and makes the correct answer pretty obvious. You DON'T try to find a woman who wants to have sex before committing, and then fool her into waiting around. You want to find someone who is already compatible with your way of mating.

I don't think you should put a limit on it though, you will know when you realize she is the right one. Keep in mind though you do want to be sure you are compatible in that area also and even if you are not intimate right away, she does have to feel you desire her in that way or she may think you are not interested.

But waiting is my thing if I'm still debating whether I can see the woman as something more long term. After all, you never know if once you do it for the heck of it, the next morning you may be like "oh crap, I made a mistake" and she's all into you and in comes drama. I'm no player but believe what you wanna believe. I was raised old fashioned and I see no reason to change that unless I can truly see myself with a woman. But in this age, if you jump into things and start being intimate with lots of women then over time you'll feel empty inside, satisfied temporarily by sex. In the long term you'll start to see women as nothing special and pretty soon you'll miss the chance when the right one comes along, and she sees that you truly don't value her.

I don't think there is anything wrong with building a friendship and dating someone for six months or longer while you get to know each other better and see where things could go. It's difficult, however, when you are attracted to someone and you KNOW that you are willing to put in the effort to make a relationship work with them. You may know these things about yourself. However, it takes time to know if the other person feels the same way and wants the same things. Sometimes attraction wins out over logic.

I think that waiting to jump in the bed with someone is a good idea but waiting until you know they are the person you would be willing to marry might be a bit long. Most men I date I don't even think about marriage stuff until we've been dating a good 3-6 months or longer in some cases - and even then they usually end in disaster, hence, the reason I am currently single again.
