my2sunshine Pulaski, NY 51, joined Apr. 2013	Fish, hunt, garden, preserve...but you are absolutely right...I have to have electricity for my refrigerator, freezer and washing machine! My tractor runs on diesel and my tiller runs on gas. I'm not interested in using horses for the workload. I do use methane from the earth for heat, hot water and indoor cooking...the well was drilled in the late 1800s and still produces what I need. You won't catch me cutting down trees for firewood or chopping it either...I will gather downed wood for an outdoor fire and cook dinner.

hunterdan Olalla, WA 60, joined Jan. 2008	Yes I designed the house that will accept water from a creek in a filtering system to make it drinkable and I am still figuring out what size motor to put on to make 200 amp service to the house. the house has 1 bedroom one utility room 1 bathroom kitchen living room. in the utility room will be two freezers and cupboard and counter and things like a bread maker, meat grinder, meat slicer,Dehydrator. and I only cut dead trees or windfalls it makes good firewood main source of heat would be a pellet stove the wood stove would be for When ::signcoolthe power goes out I can still cook and heat

Funny, when you put up some real questions, they all run LOL People think catching a few fish or shooting an occasional deer is "living off the land" I keep enough supplies to make it a couple of years, but really don't look forward to "having" to do it

I have never been very materialistic and will be living off grid in 3.5 yrs.

I live next to a creek that is my water and power( debox with 1/2 pipe for water and a 6" pipe to a 2nd debox with a tee for power ). have 12 volt back-up (solar panel)for water and a some RV lights in cabin + oil lamps. i hunt and can, have two 12x24 greenhouses (pvc and plastic with raised beds). sell hides and pan the greek for gold to pay for items needed. do some trapping in the winter.

My hat is off to anyone who can do what you do. I have solar for emergency and long camping trips even keep a couple 60 lb bags of mixing salt for emergency preserving of freezer foods, many filled liquefied gas tanks to survive a long time in emergency but living with no well four months a year in Alaska is about as much survivalist as I want to be. Have self harvested almost all my own meat, fish and seafood all my life and given enough away to receive many perks in life, though never sold or direct traded other than furs and gator hides.

markjetson Albuquerque, NM 61, joined Jan. 2013	at least you guys have the most important thing needed to live off the land- mindset-I'm pretty sure the op meant living up in the mountains and staying there, for the most part & with no electric. Imagine a small structure & wood burning stove, cot and sleeping bag. It's not tough in this day and age as far as isolation/loneliness goes, since it's hard to find someplace without cell coverage/internets. And once a person realizes they really only need a city for medical and supplies, they may even come to prefer off grid to city living forever. Spent considerable time in the hills a long time ago and the big thing is to be "dialed in" there's no need to go all primitive, if you try to, I doubt you'd last.

There are also other great ways to conserve energy like solar, smaller fridges and wood heat and hot water. I'm hoping to find a man that would be able to work on these projects with me.
