Just a thought or two as this day winds down -
For this generation, military service was most likely a choice - take your chances with the Draft, maintain a deferment, most likely 2S (full time student) or just join. Through the early 70's, VietNam was still the 'hot spot' but many still joined and got assigned to Europe instead - really irrelevant - you gambled - and today's 18 year old's gamble too - too many global 'hotspots' still - we, guys and gals, joined, got out jobs done, and for most, came home to pick up life again.
Unfortunately, this generation in particular, came home to protests - it did not matter if you were in SouthEast Asia or not - you were ex military - and a target.
It does this former 'swabbie's' heart good to see every now and again, the response and welcome back that is being extended to those coming home from Iraq and/or Afghanistan or any other hotspot -
My thoughts go out to the fifty eight thousand plus of my brothers and sisters who didn't come home, and to the multiple thousands today whose lives are completely forever changed - these are the true 'heroes' that this day is dedicated to -
A Salute to ALL the warriors - past, present, future -
