I have a 2010 Triumph Thunderbird 1600 with 27,000 miles. The owners manual calls for 10w40 or 15w50 oil. The dealer told me that I should only use 10w50. It's always had a Castrol 4t 10w50, on my next oil change I am going with Mobil 4t 10w40 since I can get it local, every where I have been no one can get 10w50. My question is will it be ok to go with Mobil 10w40?

Go with what the owners manual says. The 10W40 should work just fine. However, in the searing heat of the summer, then switch to the 15w50.

Now if the dealer has some sort of information backing up his claim in writing, ask to see it. That should sort out any arguments and issues. If not, go with what the owners manual says to do.

Back in the day, I used to get into all kinds of arguments with the Ford diesel owners. I had what was called a Special Service Message. Even gave copies to the customers I had to deal with.

In said message, it strongly suggested that the 365 and 444 diesel engine get the oil changed every 3K, and to use 10w30 in the winter, and 15w40 the rest of the year.

Those tightwads wouldn't listen to that. Seems they are quick to pony up 5-8K more for a diesel option, then get cheap on maintenance............

I live Hot Florida and have always ran Castrol 4t 20w50 in my 03 Ninja 900r. 64,000 miles now on bike and never have had to do anything but change plugs and oil like your supposed too.

I use 20 viscosity because it coats metal better then 10. 50 weight because of heat in Florida.

used 20W50....it has worked for me for over 30 yrs. And when that doesn't work, next step is straight 50W and after that it's 70W and a rebuild ASAP...but go for what ya know
