The top 3 starting pitchers for the 1965 world champion Dodgers combined to hurl 931 innings during the regular season; the top 6 starting pitchers for the 2015 world champion Royals combined to hurl 853 innings during the regular season. Yep, the game has changed over the course of the past 5 decades.

Koufax and Drysdale were two of the greatest pitchers in the history of baseball. Indeed, baseball has changed and not for the better.

Sandy Kotex, in 65', 26-8 with 27 complete games, 2.04era, 335 inning pitched, & 382 SO's. 27-9 in 66' with a 1.73 era and 27 more complete games. Ya, he was pretty good.

How come he was just a 500 pitcher early in his career even though he was on pennant winning teams? I always assumed he found control and then he was unhittable.

Ask Johnny Roseboro ..lefties tend to take longer to control their stuff...perhaps he developed more on his fastball and less milage on his off speed stuff = success..

In the 1950's, "bonus babies" couldn't be sent to the minors to develop either. They had to be carried on the roster while they figured it out. So they tended to get less work on winning teams, because the manager (Walter Alston in this case) wasn't going to risk blowing the pennant in order to send some kid out there every four or five days. So Koufax was a long reliever/spot starter in the beginning.
