Okay folks, just trying to get some conversation going...

I moved back to Alaska about a year ago, after spending nearly 30 years in Oregon. Prior to that I was in Sitka for five years.

First time in Alaska was in Kodiak, with the Navy ~ 1960-62. Moved here, permanently, in 1971. Been here ever since, with only a couple trips Outside to visit family in California.

When I was a kid, I read a book ~ "Go North, Young Man! Go North!" ~ by a fella named Gordon Stoddard, who homesteaded property on Stariski Creek on the Kenai Peninsula, just after the end of WWII, and wrote about his comedic 'misadventures'. I was really impressed with his tales, and decided (at 11 years old) that Alaska would be my home.

I spent my first five years in Anchorage, and then bought property in Anchor Point, never connecting the fact that Anchor point is only a few miles south of my "hero's" homstead in Stariski Creek until I mentioned, to a friend, my reason for always wanting to live in Alaska. She said, "Well, Gordon's a good friend of mine! He only lives a few miles up the road... You wanna meet him?"

Hell, no! I was afraid he would turn out to be some sawed-off, little, shrimp of a man, and not the towering hero of my childhood imagination. I've lived this close to him for more than 30 years, and never met him ~ he's deseased now, but I did meet his daughter, Willow, and she assured me that Gordon was, indeed, a giant ~ at least in her eyes, and all who knew him.

I wish I had met him for no other reason than to let him know how his tales had drawn me into the Greatland.

since 1994 and loving it. I tried to leave once, thought I wanted to get out of this small town. I was back and happy 5 months later. The most beautiful sight was flying into Anchorage at dawn in the winter, it looked like a perfect black and white picture. I knew I would never leave again except maybe for vacations.

I lived with my grandparents while going to college. They had a map of Alaska table cloth and grandad would tell stories of when he was up here during the war and had all kinds of stories. Never thought I would come up here, but got a great job opportunity in 1990, loaded up the car and drove North for 5 days and been here ever since September 27, 1990. Often wonder where I would like to kick my feet up and retire in 20 years. Arizona is too damn hot most of the year, California too damn expensive and crowded. Seattle same thing except you also have to deal with the rain. Alaska isn't all that bad, and there is nothing finer than cruising around the state in a small plane or playing golf at Settlers Bay or Palmer in the summertime.

Smiling here, hows 1954....and quite a few changes taken place. To be honest though when your only four years old----that's when older siblings fill in the blanks. I do love the place except for the 50 below. Spend quite a bit of time fishing in Valdez during the summer and curling in the winter. Hope your stay is a great one.

Arrived in Anchorage on Mother's Day 1997 with my husband and two kids in a mini van pulling all our things...ok All the hunting, fishing and camping stuff! We just walked away from everything we owned to start over in Alaska. That husband is LONG GONE NOW(thank God!) and back in the lower 48 where we moved from!

As for me...this is home! I love it here!

I've been here for 4 years and while I love Alaska, it's time for a change. My parents are both in the military so moving around is just an instinct. I love seeing new places and will be moving down to the lower 48 in about two years once I finish my college course.

Pop moved me here in 1958 although I have lived on the east coast abit back in 1986. Its been pretty easy on me, I have worked thru out the state, don't really care for the cold on the north slope although even the wind storm we had the other day took some adjusting too. I can see why some move away after 50 years up here.

And I'm not going anywhere - not permanently. Love to travel though.

I have been here since 93, and every year I swear I am moving, cause I am tired of the winter. My son says sure mom, u been saying that for years now and havent left yet. I probably would leave if my son and daughter in law, and 2 grandsons, tell me they are ready to move. Until, then I will continue to piss n moan about the winter, just maybe I could find that special someone to make the winter nights a bit warmer.

I no longer live in Alaska, but I consider it my home state seeing as that's where I spent most of my childhood years.

My dad was in the Coast Guard, stationed in Homer '88-'92, and Kodiak '92-'98. We moved after my parents divorced. I kinda miss being in that area, the schools up there were a lot better than most other places I've been since.

Also, I think the winters there were a lot easier than here in Wisconsin, seeing we were on the southern area of the state near the coast. I'd love to visit up there again someday, if I can ever save the money for it.

Very interesting! I just spent most of the summer in Alaska, I've lived there off and on since 1991 and now that I'm retired I'll be coming back for good. Alaska is home! I have family there...it's easy to make the move. I had an aunt and uncle that lived there since 1950 and passed away a couple of years ago...they had some great stories.

I first moved to Fairbanks in 1975; stayed for four years. Only reason I left was because my wife said she didn't like the winters. After we moved, she had been in southeastern Washington state for only a couple of months when she said she missed Alaska and wanted to return! In 1981, we did return -- first to the Palmer-Wasilla area, then to Kodiak; we were here about 2 years total that time, but moved back to Washington state for a business opportunity. Then we moved to Idaho for a year and a half, then back to the Pacific Northwest, where I worked in the private sector for a brief time then for a state university for 17.5 years.
I've been back in Alaska since mid-2007 and am glad to be back. My wife died in June, 2010, so I'm possibly wanting to make a move. I'd love to move to another part of the state, such as the Kenai Peninsula. Unfortunately, due to inability to get affordable health care insurance due to a pre-existing condition, I may be forced to leave the state and move someplace like Panama or Ecuador, though my preference would definitely be to stay here.
