It's Hyundai Elantra 2003, 4 cyl, 2L, front wheel drive, auto transmission, 30K miles. I bought it new. Had no problems with it whatsoever up until this winter. It died at a red light, which didn't make me feel good at all. The light to check something was on. I was going to work, and boom, my car is dead. I re-started it, and for a while afterwards it was doing something like a power loss, then it was Okay. I have no problem starting it, it's just this. So... I went over to a place called Rainbow Muffler (they do a number of things, not only mufflers), and asked them. A mechanic told me that this has to do with the car's fluids and cold weather. I am blessed to live in the Great Lakes area of the U.S. (midwest, about a mile or so from the lake). I am not sure that the mechanic even looked into it. Anyway, I thought oh well, we are only left with a couple of months of winter, I'll wait and see. Then it happened again. In both cases, the car was practically fairly cold, meaning I only drove about 0.1 or so of a mile, when it died at the red light. After the second occurrence, it was again doing a number with the power loss, at 2.5K rpm I could only go at barely 30 mph. From ever since then, every red light is a nightmare; I expect my car to die anytime. I've developed a habit of putting the car in park when it's at the red light in case it dies again; I don't know if this helps any, but sure makes me feel slightly better if this happens again while the car is in park. I don't know much about cars and I am on a budget. Any ideas are greatly appreciated. Thanks. Anna

P.S. I was thinking, I've never had this problem prior to this winter. And the fluids are still the same, for the last six years that I own this car. What could all this do with the fluids? I don't think he was joking...

I'm thinking it's an engine vacuum problem. Try shifting into neutral when approaching a stop ,just to see if it stalls. Eventually ,you'll have to take the car into a shop and have it put on an annalizer(spelling?).They can bring up the trouble codes, and hopefully correct the problem.

you might wanna consider flushing your coolant, maybe its the problem. how long since you've had a tune-up? probably your best bet is going to the cheapest place you can find and get a basic diagnostic...beleive me,theres different diagnostic tests. get a basic one. batteries often give out in winter too. or the pcv valve(its a breathing element). like i said, instead of guessing,go get a diagnostic....runs about 75.00. worth it.

Its a hyundai thats why. Dont worry about the fluids. That guy is an idiot. It could be an idle problem or something with vacuum. Check for cracked hoses

an idiot? ive been working on cars my whole life. only a moron would say "its because you own a hyundai". doesnt matter what she drives. its a 6 yr old car. and yes,if fluids are low,it leads to burning or stalling.and i DID say"its probably NOT the main problem,if you read far enough....idiot

so,we'll place bets. i say..pcv valve or an oxegen sensor. you say hoses or vacuum. both are good guesses.

get the check enigne litght checked to see what it reads on hyundai's the code that you get out of the computer will lead you to the problem. if it happens at a red light or when you come to a stop could be the throttle position sensor. but deffinatly get the a shop or a hyundai dealer to check it and it might be under warranty. and if you have the money get a 30,000 mile service dine to it.

Seeing how you live north of me and the weather here is real cold, I would say water in the fuel system. Go buy some de-icer at the parts store and add it to your gas tank. Shouldn't cost more than $3 and should help.

Dieing and loss of power are symptoms of fuel starvation from ice in the fuel lines.

Good luck and let us know if that doesn't do the trick.

Thanks, everyone. I actually did the 30K mile check, but not at the dealership as they wanted to charge me $500 for it, which I thought was way too much, so I took it to the Rainbow Muffler instead. RM charged me much less and basically performed check of all systems, coolant flush, air filter and oil change, all except for the transmission fluid change, which I will take care of later on. I think when I brought up the stalling problem, the mechanic didn't want to bother with it for some reason.

So, I will take care of it this coming week, and will let you know what it turned out to be. Some sites say that it might take a few trips while the shop tries this and that, oh my. I don't have much of the free time. Will have to take care of it, though. I am not sure when a tune up was done. Will have to check the paperwork.

It wouldn't hurt to have an educated opinion, so now I will ask the mechanic to check this and that, everything that you so kindly mentioned. Now I know what I am talking about, at least a little bit.

it'll probabaly be one of three things
1} idle air bypass valve
2} cold start valve
3} fuel pressure regulater

when you're at the red light, if you lightly press
on the gas pedal,.. does it keep running ?? or stall ??

if it keeps running, more than likely you have a bad
idle air bypass valve / idle air control valve

if it keeps stalling, you might have a bad ..
cold start valve ...

before it started stalling, was anything done to the engine ??
or was it.. an , all of a sudden thing .??

malexand...that could be it. but,if she's driving it everyday, chances are...its probably not it. if you constantly have your vehicle in use, then there usually isnt a condensation build up. you never know though.

If it is doing it all the time, it can possibly be the throttle position sensor.

Fuel filter--air filter---bad hoses that cause vacuum leaks---it could be anything. Only a mechanic with the know how can fix your problems. The car has a way to be diagnosed---so you need that done--even a sensor or two can be in need of changing--and will stall a car out. It takes preventive maintenance to keep a car going day after day. Spend some now or a lot later--it still costs you money. Your owners manual will tell you what needs to be done and at what intervals to get the work done. Good luck to you.

omg ,,cold weather and short trips, any one think about a thermastat gone bad,,, tends to mess with the putter and idle air and fuel if not warmed up.come on water in the fuel, dont you all have ethenol in it at least 15% that takes care of the moisture in the gas and cleans the injecters,,my best bet is your thermastat is bad, and not getting the motor warm enough in that short distance...

Maybe you can't , but some of us know how.
obviously we cannot fix the car, but we can guide the person in the right
direction, and when they talk to a mechanic, they can do it with more
confidence. Why wouldn't a mechanic be able to "diagnose" through a
computer? If the car owner gives you the year, make, model, brief history,
and the complaint, a mechanic should be able to give an educated opinion.
of course we won't always be right, were only human.
For a lot of people an engine is very confusing, and "diagnosing"
a modern engine "scares" people because they don't "understand"
the basics.
the first step... look at the obvious first, under the hood
thats just common sense.. look for any loose ,damaged, broken ,wires
and hoses.. look for damage caused by heat, ... heat causes a lot of damage
on plastic and rubber parts.
make sure all your "connections" have a good tight / clean fit.
you would be surprised how many times a car is fixed by something
as simple as a rubber hose.
for example ... a rubber vacuum line routed near the exhaust manifold
over time ,that hose will go bad, and if that hose happens to be
an "input" signal from a sensor, the computer will get a false reading,
and the engine will not run right.
all complicated problums require a logical approach.
you need a plan of attack, and you diagnose in proper steps
you follow a procedure....

1)It's harder for fuel to vaporize when the engine is cold, especially when it's cold outside. It is the fuel's vapor that creates the combustion. Not the fuel itself. So once you come to a stop, there isn't enough fuel vapor ratio to keep the stroke cycle going so your engine shuts off.

2) A gas tank that is not full doesn't help either and promotes the build up of condensation in your tank, contaminating the fuel with water. So that can cause it to shut off to.

3)If this happens too often, water can get into your fuel injectors, contaminate your fuel pump and trigger a trouble code.. "ENGINE LIGHT".
Just a thought!

If this just started in the winter, it's probably not the throttle postion sensor. It won't hurt to have a vacuum leak test perfomed too. These too problems simultaniously, your engine may not even start.

Since you have an engine code, you can go to either auto zone or advanced auto parts to get an engine code reading for free.

Just a thought!

intermittent problums are the hardest to diagnose..

you could still check it for ,"codes" not all bad sensors will
set a code.

when was the last time the fuel filter was replaced ?
over a year ? replace it..

i'm not sure if it has one or not, but check the "distributer cap" for moisture
if it does have one.

you might wanna consider doing a "compression" check..
it'll let you know whether your problum is "internal" or "external"

When you get your car repaired at a shop, when you pay your bill,
your car should be fixed, you shouldn't have to "hope to god"
any good shop, will not "oversell", "overcharge", and
if they don't stand behind their work,.. something is wrong
somewhere.
if you just had the timing belt done, im assuming for
"scheduled maintenance" 80,000 miles ??, and the water pump
.. that means they had the front part of the engine removed.
they shouldn't of charged you labor for the tensioner.
because thats something that should of been "noticed", and
it just doesn't make sense that it went bad , a week after
they worked on it.
when the tensioner goes bad, either theres a loud "grinding" noise
or something won't work, like your power steering will get hard
or no A/C, or the battery will have "charging" problums..
depending on the person that worked on it.. 18 year old kid ??
or qualified mechanic,..parts don't always go back, the way they should.
bolts get broken, threads get stripped, and a lot of times,
"if it'll work" and if the shop is busy, it won't get fixed..

if that fixes your "intermittent" problums,
you got lucky, and hopefully it does, i wish you good luck..
if it doesn't, make sure all the connections fit "tight"
and make sure they weren't broken.
plastic connectors are fragile, but you should be able to tell,
if something got broke, or doesn't seem or look right
a lot of times the battery connections at the battery
will cause problums. dirty and or loose connections at the battery
can cause "intermittent" problums. if you have a "cheap" battery
trash it, and get a good battery

im a mechanic i would have to have my hands on the car to be certain.if the check engine light is on have the code[s]scanned and have the throttle body checked for carbon build up if it is carbon build up that can restrict the idle air port in the throttle body. an induction service may fix your stalling problem when you are stopped.

This has nothing to do with driving an import. And the reason I bought it in 2003, was because it was a good deal and a local dealer.

But have to tell you this, it pays to know exactly what you want to have done on your car. Otherwise, you'd be taken to cleaners, and still won't get it fixed. So far, I tried Tuffy, they told me that because of my car's age and the mileage, they'd do a tune up; later on, they agreed to do a throttle body cleaning, but only because I mentioned it. Then, a friend suggested to do a basic diagnostic test; I called them, and sure enough, they'd do it too.

So far, I didn't do anything on it. Am planning to take it for a basic diagnostic test (a special of $49.99) about a week from now.

Sometimes I think, maybe I should just trade it. For a something like PT Cruiser (used, of course). But then again, what comes around, goes around... don't want to end up with someone else's headache... Well, I'll take it for an inspection anyway.

So... what is it about buying an import? PT Cruiser is perfectly American made, but I'd heard some bad stories about it on the net. On the other hand, I heard similar stories about Elantra as well, but this one didn't give me any trouble up until now. Hmmm...

for your car check out consumer report's buying guide....lists engine as above average...car is listed as better than average!!

the only way to decide if you need another car is to keep track of cost per mile!

add up all expenses and divide by the miles driven...do that with a new car and you will see that even though you have to spend money from time to time on a used car, the cost per mile is about the same or even lower...two ways to go, all money up front for a new vehicle or pay as you go....

if you are only driving 30k miles in 6 years that is not very much and the depreciation on a new car would be more than repairs on a used one, depending on the vehicle....

suggest you go toyota or whatever toyota knock off an american company uses...

check out consumer reports, try some of their suggested picks....

In the mean time, you need to have a computer hooked up to your car to determine what is wrong...also, going in and asking a mechanic to look at a specific thing may mislead them and distract them from finding the real problem...better to just tell them what symptoms, have them look and get back to you before they rebuild the engine, even if you know it is just a vacuum line..

I'm convinced that everyone here just guesses instead of reading the problem.

1) check engine light
2) only stalls at idle speed

winter has nothing to do with it other than coincidence.

check vacuum lines, have the code pulled, and look at the pcv hose for a gross evap leak...if the pcv valve has never been changed (which it probably hasn't) it will start to blow backwards and soak the hose in oil, which in turn will crystallize, harden, and suck a hole in itself.

hun, do yourself a favor and get it done SOON. eventually it just won't start.

Quote from cruise427:
Maybe you can't , but some of us know how.
obviously we cannot fix the car, but we can guide the person in the right
direction, and when they talk to a mechanic, they can do it with more
confidence. Why wouldn't a mechanic be able to "diagnose" through a
computer? If the car owner gives you the year, make, model, brief history,
and the complaint, a mechanic should be able to give an educated opinion.
of course we won't always be right, were only human.
For a lot of people an engine is very confusing, and "diagnosing"
a modern engine "scares" people because they don't "understand"
the basics.
the first step... look at the obvious first, under the hood
thats just common sense.. look for any loose ,damaged, broken ,wires
and hoses.. look for damage caused by heat, ... heat causes a lot of damage
on plastic and rubber parts.
make sure all your "connections" have a good tight / clean fit.
you would be surprised how many times a car is fixed by something
as simple as a rubber hose.
for example ... a rubber vacuum line routed near the exhaust manifold
over time ,that hose will go bad, and if that hose happens to be
an "input" signal from a sensor, the computer will get a false reading,
and the engine will not run right.
all complicated problums require a logical approach.
you need a plan of attack, and you diagnose in proper steps
you follow a procedure....

cruise, I agree with you 100%. Right on spot.

take the car by Auto Zone, get them to put their computer on it. They will diagnose it on the spot. It might not be 100% all the problem, but at least you'll know when you take it in to a shop, you'll know your way around a bit in the conversation. ASK QUESTIONS. When they say it might be this or that, get them to explain what this or that is.

If you start replacing parts you are going dowm the wrong road. You're better off taking it to a tech and letting them diagnose it for sure. With the computer controlled vehicles it makes it even more impossible to do without seeing the vehicle. When people call me and ask me about a problem with their car I tell them to bring it in because if you tell them it could be this or that they will go out an buy that part and if it does not fix it they blame you even if you told them not to do that. Those electronic parts are expensive and cannot be returned!!!

I would say O2 sensor... or intake manifold crack or leak... its not old enough to clog the exhaust, but that may present the same issues... it is kinda a guess but I aint dumb, and now that I think about that car is probly smarter than me... soooo,

Quote from iaminohio:

I don't think he was joking...
you need to have your idle checked to see if its to low. theres a oil preasure switch on the engine that shuts it off and then puts in limp home mode when it doesnt send the right signal to the ecm, which it wont do if your idle is to low causing your oil preasure to read to low, quit tqking it to a muffler shop, take it to a tuneup shop my 2c's

EVERYONE who is not an expert in automotive repairs. iATN. Find a mechanic or shop here. These folks are ASE certified, most of them Masters. Please, please, it is very difficult to diagnose vehicles without very specific info, fuel trim, fuel preasure, diagnostic trouble codes.

Yes, but just because someone is ASE CERTIFIED doesn't mean they are an honest, qualified mechanic. I got stuck with someone who cut some serious safety corners to save himself the exrta work, and we almost lost our lives! Before choosing a mechanic ask around to people you know you can trust first!...TAKE CARE!

There are many different ASE tests. If you can pass one, you are considered certified. You don't have to tell me about incompetant mechanics. I have seen the work of many. iATN can give a list of those who are the best in the area, and I would suggest that from that list you talk to friend and neighbors about your list, that is if you have friends and neighbors.

You are right about that...anyone can read and take a test....Even if someone thats ASE certified has a toolbox full of tools,, does not mean that they actually know how to use them... Was ASE master certified,, until I witnessed a "ASE master certified tech" install a screw in the fuse block of a vehicle instead walking say 15 feet to get the correct fuse... Burnt the car to the ground,,so I Said to myself whats the use if any idiot can obtain a cert..Plus I dont have to impress myself or anyone else with a piece of paper as though it makes me better than the next mechanic...

I disagree. Just a bit over 6 yrs old is not past the life expectancy. This didn't happen lately, I keep my fingers crossed of course. Besides, it has only about 35K miles. C'mon, people drive much older cars and with more miles on them. On the cars not people LOL. Furthermore, new cars cost, while this one is paid off.

No kidding! This makes me think... I guess I could do a better job, if I knew where the fuse box was, of course.

the answer is actually painfully easy, all you gotta do is simply avoid red lights and *poof* no more problem.
