So many memories, he was flawed, but his heart was good, and I get the feeling he suffered and tried to repay
his debt to society. He will be missed. RIP.

I am so sorry he didn't get to realize his dream of health care for all americans. I think Obama needs to repay the favor Teddy gave him when he endorsed him during the campaigne and pick up the torch on healthcare to repay Teddy. I miss him already. I hope there is another Kennedy in the clan to take his place.

Teddy Kennedy did make some big mistakes in his life, but he worked hard to atone for his sins and he found redemption. He was a tireless defender of the poor, and working men and women. He was for sure the Lion of the Senate, and was instrumental in passing legislation that has helped to lift up so many. His passing leaves a void.
I have always admired the Kennedy family, and my recently departed mother was from South Boston. She liked to brag that her father and old Joe Kennedy ran around together.
I believe in the hope that Senator Kennedy urged us to embrace. I believe he has passed the torch on to a new generation. I pray that someone strong and courageous will step up to continue fighting the good fight. God rest the soul of Teddy Kennedy. We shall never see his likes again.

I was 6 years old when JFK passed away watching his fumeral on our B&W TV set I remember saluteing the casket as John Jr did.
I was 11 when Bobby was shot i remember getting up early that morning to watch his funeral train on TV
I was at work when John Jr was reported missing. I watched his funeral on TV
I happened to fall asleep in front of the TV but was awoken by the special bulletion music that was followed by the news of Teddy's death
I guess it all affected me because at 52 I've seen more Kennedy's die young then I have family members.

I'm with alicekathleen I love the Kennedy they had flaws like Ted and everyone else, they are wealthy and gave alot back to this world, lived by the credo of Rose "To whom much has been given alot is required", good lady! Alot of them HAVE given back alot. Very democratic.

I have a question and I really don't know the answer. Why did Ted Kennedy run against Carter in 1980, when Carter was the incumbent President? Does anybody on here know?

Carter--at least initially--looked vulnerable. The Iranian Hostage Crisis went on forever, we had just come out of a stretch where gas lines were an everyday occurrence, and the left wing of the party was never crazy about Carter anyway. So I think he felt he had a real shot at the nomination. His candidacy was ruined by a long interview he did with Roger Mudd, in which he did not come off well at all. He never got his Presidential bid going after that.

Thank you, Zorro. I take it that this was destructive to the party and the beneficiary was Reagan. Although one cannot say that the same result would not have occured anyway. Is that correct?

Probably. The Hostage Crisis hurt President Carter and Reagan took advantage of that. Some have argued that if Ted had not run the party would have been more unified but I think Reagan would have won anyway. 1980 was just not a Democratic year; we also lost the Senate and took a big hit in the House (Thank God Tip O'Neil was still Speaker).
