I am answering "auburnbrunette" in this message.

Hi, I am mostly a lurker but I was working on a boring job tonight and started looking around this and other fora. I will post my profession in a separate message but thought I'd help you along at least a little in your search. Most major cities have what is called a "Small Business Administration" (SBA) that you can find in the phone book or if you have trouble get in touch with your local chamber of commerce to ask about them.

The SBA gives advice on starting a business and most of their initial advice is free, especially from a group a retired business people who make their time available to startup businesses.

But before you go to the SBA, you should reflect what interests you, where your (and perhaps your family members')talents are. Make a list. Then narrow down the list, talk to others in your family first. Then google for the words and see what types of businesses are around and narrow down your choice further.

Not every business requires a lot of startup capital. If you have a job but your money is just enough to get you through the month, don't quit it, start your little business in your spare time. Maybe you want to just start a little business on the side on the Internet first. If you don't have unlimited funds, it will take you longer but it can be done.

In any case, before you jump into anything (or even get a loan, which you might get by putting up the building you own as collateral), get advice from the SBA, chamber of commerce, talk to other business people. Then ponder about it more, but don't give up.

Hope that helps you along a little. Good luck, dg

I am not normally here but:

I am a translator from several Germanic and Romance languages to English and German and an interpreter German<>English (mostly simultaneous conference interpreting although I also do consecutive interpreting from time to time -- mostly depositions) I have been doing this for several decades and came to the US with a degree in translation and economics. I work primarily at home where I have my "tools" (i.e. my dictionaries).

I also own a translation business in Kansas City, which I started more than 30 years ago on a shoestring. It is a very small business and very labor-intensive as you can imagine. We do primarily commercial translation (technical, scientific, legal) from numerous languages, no literary work, such as novels, etc. Except for the translations that I do personally, the work is outsourced to freelance translators around the world, then sent to an editor, then I also review every job before it goes either back to a second editor or to the client. My office also does quite a bit of layout work since customers such as advertising agencies need the same layout in Chinese or Japanese, as it was in English, and they can't do it themselves.

From my Kansas City office, we also provide interpreters, primarily for hospitals and courts, mostly Spanish although every week there are also a few more exotic languages that are needed, such as Hmong, Sinhalese, etc. but also conference interpreters from time to time (not too many of those are needed in Kansas City, and the jobs I do myself are usually in another state or even another country.)

It is a very interesting profession, and two days are NEVER the same, the material translated changes continuously, and I have to do a lot of reading and research to stay up-to-date on the latest terminology because dictionaries are always decades behind the real world. [as you can tell, I'm also a night-owl]

this profession is the most underpaid. its really hard to push a car off a cliff, throw tires on buildings, dig potholes in pavement, leave cars and appliances on the side of the road for days at a time, but I have a lot of help in your naborhood, just wannabees at practice, if u see my friends, stop and say hello, and get some free lessons on how to trash your place.

Peeon, I'm on disability pension so there is a limit on what I can make, alss a pyhsical limit on my abilities. whew. On a part time bases I deliver files from one part of a company to the other via a basket attached to a segway, coolest job I ever had. Don't pay squat just my meds . gasoline and a little party money, but keeps me in the real world. I can race that sucker. I think I'm a tax break for the company also. I did have a good job for 20 years, I hope to build back up to go back to it. but they have to give me a segway as part of the deal. Hell, I might work here for free just to play on the riding toy.
