The USA really has some AMAZINGLY beautiful places... but getting beyond it is just as awesome...
I have been living out of the US, in Asia, for the past 11 years, 4 years in Japan and now 7 years in China. Florida is still homebase, but I feel fortunate and blessed beyond description for what I've been able to live, see, experience and learn.

The world is really a small place, and every continent has so much to offer.
Go ahead, check out my profile, see where I've been and ask away... I love to share experiences, I give excellent travel tips and invite most everyone to save up (a bit), get out, and explore...

Michelle

I'd just like to know what you do for a living, how do you finance your travel?

And what country has been the most amazing so far?

Hello Dr. Snuggles,

My case is not the most exciting, amazing or inspiring of stories really. I came out here eleven years ago with who was my husband. 8 years into we separate but both enjoying our lives out here we both decided to stay. I now work for a spanish magazine.
As for financing the travels, you work, you save, you go... (with a little on the card, keeping the tab under control).

I know others though who I admire. The ones that on their own decide there's a bigger world to explore and head out, often without a job secured, land in a foreign country and are able to settle find work and do good! I do admire that group. And it's only hard the first time you make the jump. Once you've lived abroad somewhere it seems you get the basics... find accomodation within the budget, hit the classifieds, find employment. And that's about it! All the rest just comes, getting out, socializing, feeding oneself... (in a nutshell...)

You have any similar experiences?

Oh, most amazing country so far? The one that marked me the most was Cambodia, Siem Reap city, visiting Angkor Wat, the people, surroundings... stole my heart.
Apart from that, it's really a combination of all seen, all the beautiful experiences, good memories and good times with everyone I've met of a different culture along the way...

I completely agree with the "be a traveler, not a tourist" quote. There's no better way to enjoy the world than living a couple of years in a country then move. It gives you time to explore and discover what it's really like to live in that country.

If you don't have the time or are not willing to spend that long away from friends and family, Couchsurfing is a great way to get kind of the same feeling and experience over a shorter period of time. It's a community of people around the world, willing and eager to host travellers from around the world. I find it even better than hosteling as it's free and you can really benefit from the experience of your host.

I hope you enjoy Shanghai. I lived there for 6 months a couple of years ago and liked it a lot. I suppose you've had plenty of time to travel around China too. There are really beautiful places to see there...

Bon vent!
