It's just an old stereotype that still lingers around. It's a great skill to have. I like both woodworking and sewing. To me, they are the same basic skill but no one dares to say it.

In all honesty, I wouldn't know where to begin as far as sewing goes. But then again, it typically takes me several hours, and several cut fingers, to wrap gifts.

  ..Who says men can't sew?...I made a killer vest with watch pocket in both side...the kind you wear under a dress jacket...with a sewing machine...I learned how to do both at the same time...
I work with leather too...hand stitched a Sheridan hand carved and tooled bible cover complete with calfskin liner...turned out better than I thought. I'm ready to try my hand at making a custom saddle and bridle...completely hand carved in Sheridan style carving and hand stitched the way is was made years ago...

I bought a sewing maching in 2001. I needed one to sew parachutes for my high power rockets when I started selling rocket kits. I've made thousands of parachutes up to 120". Then again, that's really not sewing. Still, I know how to use a sewing machine.

I know a guy who can sew after all it's a MACHINE and men love MACHINES don't they? The guy I know he makes leather jackets out of old leather car interiors and he uses the hood logo as the zipper pull. He sells these for good money. I think this is a sexist assumption.

Who says men can't sew? I was the 1st guy in Home Economics, as it was called in the day, not to learn how to sew, though I did, but it was where the girls were. Oh how they loved to help a helpless guy... LOL.

well, my husband sews Leather Clothes by hand, he makes quivers, Moccassins, Medicine Bags , Purses, even Shooters Bags. As for Men not sewing. I say thats Alot of hogwash, YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN!!!!!!!! LOL! they are just as good as women are some are even better. THERE I SAID GO TELL IT ON THE MOUNTAIN TOP! lol.

a lot of men don't sew because of their ego's... what will their shooting buddy say? many have that "womans work" crap in their heads that their dad planted. men who sew have patience and talent. there's men who sew their own guilla suits for hunting.

My dad can sew, cook, and do a lot of things! I learned especially from him, but my mom did a lot of handy work too!
But by far my dad was a better cook than my mom! He never skimped on ingredients.
I learned how to use a sewing machine and do a few stitches when I was 9 years old. Kids tend to pickup on what the parents or adults do just by watching!
I always find it sweet to find guys sewing, cooking or being a handy man, it makes it nice to do things together i.e., properly!

I just sewed curtains for my kitchen. It was one hell of a lot easier then building the cabinets. In viet nam I just used a stapler if I ripped a pocket. I was a remf so the uniforms did not rot out like the field guys.

I learned to use a sewing machine when I built my first sailboat when I was 10.
I had access to a Singer® machine with a four foot arm on a 60 foot by 40 foot table in a sail loft.
When I was in the Navy, I earned a few extra bucks by repairing uniforms, sewing on 'crows' and stripes, etc.

Men can and do sew, there are several men that Quilt and teach quilting, Ricky Tims is one of them, John Flynn another, John Flynn invented the Flynn quilting frame and is seen at most Quilt Shows doing demo's on his famous John Flynn quilting frame. Most men can measure better than alot of women due to their experience in wood working. My husband use to help me cut fabric for quiltmaking. There are many husband and wife teams that sew and do quilting as a mom and pop business to make a few extra bucks in retirement.
By the way my son can sew, he made look alike aprons for his wife and daughter last Christmas. I'm proud to say I taught him well and he is no sissy. He builds houses for a living. Men just don't brag or advertise their sewing skills.

i actually had a wonderful boyfriend at one time, who sat in amazement watching me quilt while he was watching tv, and he started asking questions of how i knew what to do ... i put him on the sewing machine, put tape on the line he needed to sew the fabric against, and handed him the pieces and away we went! it made quilting soooo much faster, and we had a great time!

I would watch TV while cutting out squares from scraps. After she passed away I finished up 30+ blankets she was working on for hospice. She had the tops already done so I just had to choose the backing, assemble, sew and tie off. I already knew how to sew.

My dad & mom can sew by hand, and use a sewing machine too! He was the best cook in the family too!
I sew regularly too and do alterations as a hobby! I learned watching my parents!
I do embroidery, sometimes I can't stand using the embroidery machine. Not as good as done by hands!

My dad made sure i can rebuild an engine! My hands arent strong enough to tighten bolts n such, but i can do rest! My dad taught me the backstich and the hemstich. I usually say guys cant sew cuz their hands are too big lol lol instead of being an insult it compliments their physique. My bro would sew dolly clothes for me when i 4 lol lol most guys i kno sew cuz their wives are so busy it helps them out. Of course sewing torn blue jeans or changing diapers, which wud u pick? Lol lol before machines n industry most tailors were men.

OP, I understand how you feel.... People are silly. Each time I go to the power tool section in Home Depot I have to wait until the salespeople take care of the male customers...regardless of the fact I was there before some of the men.
Yes, a man can sew and a lady can use a power drill, a circular saw and many other tools "for men".

I've been using a Stewart Speedy Stitcher forever. I find a lot of broken/ripped stuff and fix it enough to use and like my backpack, I've used it forever even if the repair looks like shit. I ain't spending 200 odd dollars to get a comparable new unit so it's good enough for me.

I sew something everyday, have 32 machines all are 70 to 120 years old. 5 are comercail, two of those are walking foot singer 16 - 188's. never done any clothing in my life....other than patch holes
yes most men will turn there nose up "til" they WANT something ....

Along with the sewing with these machines, you can see there all pretty old, so it's also a restoration hobby. About half are treadles with means making parts for there cabinets. I almost every machine has been a full tear down.
No BS I have rebuilt 1000's of car engines, this is very close to being the same.
A restored treadle is as much a prize as any restored car and a hell of alot more usful

I was brought up sewn , I have a sewing company in Laurel where I make costom car and boat interior and exotic skin motorcycle seats. And anything else like pants blinds anything that can be sew'n.

Some of the worlds greatest cooks,and sewers are men.If a man wants to cook or sew or design cloths,,,go for it and don't be ashamed about it!Look at what i do,i design and build custstom low rider bmx style bicycles, and im 46.People have given me a hard time at first about it,but i stuck it out and its paid of in many ways.So think about all the money saved by doing your own sewing,and in the long run ,sites like this ,with people like yourself,can show others (male or female), the benefits of sewing.
