Much prefer sashimi, the vinagerd rice which defines sushi can be quite strong and the nori rolls/wraps which often accompanying them are not appealing to me. A nice slice of salmon or tuna all by its self however is quite good.

Glad to see comments from true sushi afficionados. Not those that just like those Americanized yuppie rolls. My favorites: Toro (blue fin bell), hamachi hara (yellow tail belly), fresh aji with the bones deep fried (horse makeral), fresh abalone, konbu kazunoko or just kazunoko (herring roe; or herring roe stuck on konbu kelp), and my all-time favorite but impossible to find -- raw blue crab meat mixed with the crab roe and butter and some seaweed, then used as a nigiri topping.

I tried sushi for the first time a couple months ago. Sooo good! I had shrimp, and salmon, playing it safe. Next time, I think I will try eel!

my3, the primary problem with the crab roe, especially blue, is the V E R Y short season of availability. Not too much different than the availability of soft shell crab - usually less than six weeks. One good sushi house here, a few 'imposters'. Yummy!!

I've tried it...over and over again. Cooked or raw I just can't find anything I like.

I thought it was the seaweed so I tried the stuff made with rice paper instead and my palate thought it was just as bad.

It's one of those things that I will need a guiding hand through I guess. On my own I don't even try to order anything.

My 5 minute poor man's sushi.
Fake crab, 1 avocado, mayonnaise, syrachi sauce, a little soy sauce. Mix well and serve on crackers. You can also use canned tuna instead.

Is it sushi, well no. But it is close enough if you are in a hurry.

I'm a fan of chirashi bowls. Sashimi is so good. It always throws me why you never see a civiche in sushi restaurants, granted its roots are latin but its still an awesome idea,

i'm pretty simple when it comes to sushi these days...i used to be into the fancy rolls but i don't need all that going on at one time anymore. just give me a spicy tuna roll along with some yellowtail, unagi (as opposed to anago), octopus and a cucumber roll and i'm set. of course i'll start out with miso and sip some warm sake while i munch (although a cold sapporo or ichiban is a good substitute), and can be convinced to have some green tea ice cream once in a while too.
