Missed a 6 point yesterday morning. Just got out of the truck and maybe walked 15 feet when I looked up and he was right in front of me. Took off before I could get my rifle up. I'll see him again though.

MA shotgun opens Monday with a lovely forecast - 50 and showers. They'll be hunkered down something fierce.

I didn't have to go hunting for meat this year. When the season opened I didn't have the time and I thought I would miss out on fresh venison this year. A few days ago I was outside changing the oil on my car and I heard a loud crash and what sounded like metal grinding against asphalt and then the distinct revving of a diesel engine. Turns out whoever it was hit a deer on the two lane highway at the end of my road.
I normally don't do this sort of thing, but since it was a very fresh kill and legal in the state of TN to collect, I brought it home and had TWRA come out and tag it as roadkill. I know I will probably catch a lot of flak for doing this - I just couldn't bare to see a somewhat large ( for this area ) and healthy buck go to waste on the side of the road. I know some of you are probably going to laugh and mock me for it, but I don't like to see things go waste, especially if it can be used. Because of this unfortunate unequal fight that this deer went through, I will be able to put some food on the table and to me that is all that matters.
This is the first deer that I have ever cleaned and processed myself and very little went to waste compared to what goes on at your typical butcher. Most of the meat ended up as steaks or ground and approximately 25 pounds ended up being salted. The guts ( heart, liver, intestines, etc ) went to a local woman who rehabilitates birds of prey ( I usually take her the varmints that terrorize my parent's garden ), the cape and head went to my father ( who is a hobbyist taxidermist ) and the skin that he doesn't use will end up being turned into a pair of boots along with the other skins that I have been collecting over the years. The hooves went to a Vietnam Vet up the road who does who owns a wood shop to be used for future coat hangers. The fat ended up being rendered for emergency fat candles. The parts that weren't of any use or were of poor quality ended up as food for my father's Dermestidae beetle collection. I plan on grinding up any remaining bones into bone meal and using them as fertilizer for my mother's house plants.

Anyone that argues with what you did beeman is off their rocker. What a gift. Whole different story if you just happened upon 'roadkill' ie, no idea how long it's been there, no one around, etc. THAT would be taking one big gamble. A couple of broken ribs puncturing the paunch and the whole carcass spoils real quick.

Got a large rack early this season. Mounted it already. Had a friend over today and she said I did a good job of mounting it and well hung !
