i really want to plant raspberries. i've done some reading, and have found some varieties that thrive in KANSAS (where i will be planting them)

any other fruit growers, have any suggestions/recommendations/tips to growing these buggers? we had some in montana that grew so well with minimal care and maintenance, but it looks like i'll have to be giving these much more TLC here in kansas.

Blackberries grew abundantly on the road sides in Northern CA. So much so, that road crews would spray herbicide on the plump fruit. Sad. We would post NO SPRAY signs where we gathered. Who knows if the road crew read them; I survived. The weather is cool with morning mist. Maybe you could replicate with a misting system. Try a drip irrigation too, just I case you are away camping, they won't miss their regular watering. Also, don't plant too close to the house. Little critters like fruit too.

Rubus is a ground-cover & needs plenty of space. Top prune it to promote spreading. Use probiotics when planting: @ Lowes, Epsoma's Biotone

I grew up in a small town in Kansas - my father grew the most delicious black raspberries (not red raspberries and NOT black berries - 2 totally different things). So when I bought a house I planted 3 bushes and grew the same berries, it was like a trip back in time - and you can't buy them anywhere at least I've never found them. the only problem is they come on all at once (but you can freeze them) and go away just as quickly.

I have thought of trying blueberries where they have varieties that come on earlier or later in the season and for longer periods.

Tried raspberries in Alaska as all my neighbors have them, but planted them in to flat of soil so they say, seem to grow on the side of a hill, mound, or at least well drained soil much better. mine sure fissiled.

do you know what variety they are/where you purchased your plants/seeds? I'm still reluctant to purchase them, not seeing any good literature on known varieties that thrive here
